Sir David Brewster (1781-1868) was a Scottish physicist, mathematician, astronomer, inventor, and writer. In 1807, he undertook the editorship of the newly projected Edinburgh Encyclopaedia, of which the first part appeared in 1808, and the last not until 1830. The work was strongest in the scientific department, and many of its most valuable articles were from the Brewster's pen. The parts issue is very rare. In the U.S. it was published in 36 parts (1812- 1831). The best American engravers were engaged for the work. The set bears the bookplate and family records of Theodore B. Appel (1823-1907), a prominent Lancaster, PA physician, historian, and author, who also served as Secretary of Health in Pennsylvania. S&S / AI 24929; Rink. pp. xxiv, 540. 12mo. 210 mm. XLib. Foxed and age stained. Original leather backed cloth covered boards. Scarce. Joseph Hippolyt Pulte (1811-1884) was, born in Meschede, Westphalia, Germany. He was educated in the gymnasium of Sost and received his medical degree at the University of Hamburg. He followed his brother, Dr. Hermann Pulte, to this country in 1834, and practised in Cherrytown, Pennsylvania, but became a convert to homoeopathy, and took an active interest in forming the homoeopathic academy in Allentown, Pennsylvania, which was closed in 1840. He then removed to Cincinnati, Ohio. In 1844 he founded, with others, the American Institute of Homoeopathy in New York city, and in 1872 he established in Cincinnati the medical college that bears his name, where he was professor of the science of clinical medicine. In 1852 he was made professor of the same branch at the Homoeopathic college of Cleveland, and he served as professor of obstetrics in 1853-'5. He contributed to various homoeopathic journals, was an editor of the "American Magazine of Homoeopathy and Hydropathy" in 1852-'4, and of the "Quarterly Homoeopathic Magazine" in 1854; edited Teste's " Diseases of Children," translated by Emma H. Cote; and was the author of other influential medical and Homoeopathic works. MED 7

This the third volume deals mainly with Louisiana rather than the West Indies. It is especially important for its comments on natural history and "La Flore Louisianaise" later translated into English by C. S. Rafinesque and published in New York in 1817. In 1807, C. C. Robin published in French an account of his travels. Rafinesque was a controversial figure and his revision was not entirely satisfactory. He not only translated, but abridged and augmented Robin's flora quite extensively. The result being a systematic catalogue enumerating over 525 species. Rafinesque claimed 30 genera and 196 species as new to science. Plant taxonomists since then have had extreme difficulty in interpreting the status of these so-designated new taxa, because of the often cryptic descriptions Rafinesque provided and the fact that no specimens (or types) that Robin might have obtained are known to exist. He discovered the Marquis de Sade's manuscript of The 120 Days of Sodom, which had been believed to be lost, and published it under the pseudonym Eugène Dühren in 1904. In 1899 he had published Marquis de Sade: his life and works. under the same pseudonym. An important work on the medical properties and other aspects of hemlock, aconite, hyoscyamus, colchicum, etc. Before this publication, these plants were considered highly poisonous and had been rarely used in medicine owing to the difficulty of accurately estimating their doses and the danger this presented to the patient. Anton Storck, a 19-year-old Viennese doctor, in 1760 repeatedly sipped tea laced with hemlock, said to be the suicide drug of Socrates and believed in Storck's time to be beneficial against pain. The experiment so terrified Storck that he lost the ability to speak temporarily, but he suffered no lasting ill effects, and went on to publish this study. There is a direct line from Storck to the Americans Frederick Prescott and Scott Smith, who in the 1940s had themselves so paralyzed temporarily by curare that not even an eyelid could blink, thus demonstrating that the deadly poison could immobilize patients and revolutionize surgery. Throughout medical history researchers have served deliberately as guinea pigs because animal experiments can work only up to a point. Blake, p. 434; Waring 379.
