Joseph Hippolyt Pulte 1811-1884 was born in Meschede Westphalia Germany. He was educated in the gymnasium of Sost and received his medical degree at the University of Hamburg. He followed his brother Dr. Hermann Pulte to this country in 1834 and practised in Cherrytown Pennsylvania but became a convert to homoeopathy and took an active interest in forming the homoeopathic academy in Allentown Pennsylvania which was closed in 1840. He then removed to Cincinnati Ohio. In 1844 he founded with others the American Institute of Homoeopathy in New York city and in 1872 he established in Cincinnati the medical college that bears his name where he was professor of the science of clinical medicine. In 1852 he was made professor of the same branch at the Homoeopathic college of Cleveland and he served as professor of obstetrics in 1853-'5. He contributed to various homoeopathic journals was an editor of the "American Magazine of Homoeopathy and Hydropathy" in 1852-'4 and of the "Quarterly Homoeopathic Magazine" in 1854; edited Teste's " Diseases of Children" translated by Emma H. Very Good. Large 8vo 9" - 10. Perhaps a unique item by any definition exceedingly rare and printed on a kind of rag paper that feels weighty in the hand the bite of the type is sharp. WorldCat dot org shows only two institutions that have just a single copy of the 20 October piece. The overall condition is easily Very Good except for four pages that show discoloration and that have short closed tears. Published between 1778-1789 in Paris. Most of these documents are four pages long with the longest being 12 pages. Bound in the original bluish-gray diagonally striped lines wraps and now protected in Mylar. Paper title label over spine is slightly abraded but the blue pen ink in cursive is exquisite especially so given that the spine measures no more than a third of an inch across. Some predictable waffling to text but neither odor nor any signs of damp-staining to the rag paper. Some chipping to spine wear along both joints to spine head and foot some slight loss of paper on rear panel. The piece de resistance is the four-page document dated Feb. 12 1788 titled "Programme sur L'Allaitment Artificiel Des Enfans Nouveaux Nes. Propose dans la seance public de la Societe Royale de Medecine." Curiously enough there are two copies of this document present. There are also two copies of: "Extrait d'un lettre sur la fondation d' un prix relatif aux progres de L'art de guerir." O.C.L.C. lists the National Library of Medicine and the College of Physicians and Surgeons Philadelphia having 1/2 of one of these 26 documents. O.C.L.C. also lists The Smithsonian as having 10 of the 26 documents all bound together and having been a gift of Bern Dibner. The final piece features a gorgeous chapter tail of a snake crawling up a spire. The bottom of the page notes that the piece was printed in Paris at De l'Imprimerie de Ph.-D. PIERRES Premier Imprimeur Ordinaire du Roi de la Societe Royale de Medecine &c. rue Saint-Jacques. 1789. Right that is on the even the Revolution. Nearly at gutter on that page is signed in ink "M.
