Fine Fine English Original bdg. Dust wrapper. 4to. (30 x 25 cm). In English and Turkish. 336 p., ills. The sifahanes of philanthoropic monuments of the Seljuk and Ottoman eras.= Anadolu Selçuklu ve Osmanli sefkat abideleri sifahaneler. Over the course of centuries, charitable institutions such as schools, madrasas, caravansaries, public baths, mosques, and soup kitchens were built in the Seljuk and Ottoman lands as monuments of voluntary service to the people. Based on religious beliefs cast in the mold of beneficence, Anatolia was endowed with these monuments of compassion. One example of these institutions was the hospitals. In these institutions people were treated free of charge regardless of their religion, the language they spoke, or their race. Sifahenes were the hospitals of the time. They were treatment sanctuaries for travelers, merchants, and the homeless. These darüssifas, which assumed the role of hospitals, took shape during the era of Islamic civilization and continued to provide service throughout the Seljuk and Ottoman eras as wel. Sufahanes, regarded as "a house of healing" or "a refuge of health", were usually called a darüssifa (house of healing); however, in different eras and different places they were referred to as bîmarhâne (house for the sick), bîmâristan, mâristan (abode of the sick), dârülmerza (house of the sick), dârülâfiye (house of wellbeing), dârüssihha (house of health; Arabic) sifahane, (house of health; Persian) dârü't-tibb (house of medicine), sifaiyye (that which is for healing), and tîmârhâne (house of caressing). Second Edition.

On 1 October 1925 in the city of Düsseldorf he married Erna Schlossmann (1895-1998), a pediatrician and daughter of Arthur Schlossmann (1867- 1932) who too was a pediatrician and head of the Children's Hospital at the Academy of Medicine in Düsseldorf. It said: 'In the name of the Reich, I relieve you of your duties in the service of the Prussian Government by June 1935 based on the orders dated 12 June 1935. Adolf Hitler, Hermann Göring'. Through the Emergency Organization for German Scientists Abroad Eckstein received an offer from the Turkish Government to work at the Ankara Numune Hospital. The contract was signed in Berlin on 1 August 1935 by Hamdi Arpag, Ambassador to Germany. The Ministry of Health and Social Assistance asked Eckstein to undertake a trip accompanied by his assistant Dr Selahattin Tekand during July and August 1937 to investigate children's diseases and mortality in 13 central and southern Anatolian provinces and villages. Additional aims were to collect information about the fertility of women and the number of surviving children. His wife, Dr Erna Eckstein-Schlossman, accompanied him. Eckstein's report was organized under the following headings: Results Obtained, Fish Consumption, Nutritional Situation, Fight against Trachoma and Diarrhoea, Skin Diseases, Fertility of Mothers and Child Mortality, Child Mortality and Villages and the Poorer Classes in Ankara.

Ibn Sina composed his major philosophical treatise, Kitab al-shifa (Book of Healing), a comprehensive account of learning that ranges from logic and mathematics to metaphysics, and the best known major medical book, Canon of Medicine, el-Kânûn fit-Tibb in 5 volumes. He wrote another short book about medicine and diseases as if a summary of his Great Canon, Kânûn-u Sagîr (Small Canon). BEKIR KARLIAGA.
Al-Farabi: A civilization philosopher.
New English Paperback. Roy. 8vo. (23 x 16 cm). In English. 108 p. Al-Farabi: A civilization philosopher. Al-Farabi's philosophical thinking was nourished in the heritage of the Arabic Aristotelian teachings of 10th-century Baghdad. His great service to Islam was to take the Greek heritage, as it had become known to the Arabs, and show how it could be used to answer questions with which Muslims were struggling. To al-Farabi, philosophy had come to an end in other parts of the world but had a chance for new life in Islam. Islam as a religion, however, was of itself not sufficient for the needs of a philosopher. He saw human reason as being superior to revelation. Religion provided truth in a symbolic form to non-philosophers, who were not able to apprehend it in its purer forms. The major part of al-Farabi's writings were directed to the problem of the correct ordering of the state. Just as God rules the universe, so should the philosopher, as the most perfect kind of man, rule the state; he thus relates the political upheavals of his time to the divorce of the philosopher from government.
