‎Very Good Turkish, Ottoman (1500-1928) Original autograph letter. 3 p. No letterhead on paper neither on envelope. In Ottoman script. Stamped envelope. It's written on envelope: "Istanbul'da (Bayezid) [?] (Mercan)'da Muradiye Sokagindaki [.] Ibnülemin Mahmud Kemal Inal Beyefendiye...". Starts as 'Birader kemalâtperverim...' [= My brother virtuous!]. It is a poetic style of Nazif. Signed as 'Süleyman Nazif'. Dated 29 Eylül 1932, Nisantasi. Nazif was an eminent Ottoman-born Turkish poet. He mastered Arabic, Persian, and French languages and worked as a civil servant during the reign of Sultan Abdul Hamid II. He contributed to the literary magazine Servet-i Fünun ("Wealth of Knowledge") until it was censored by the Ottoman government in 1901. Nazif, ever critical of the European imperialist powers, attracted once more their hostility when he wrote his satirical article "Hazret-i Isa'ya açik mektup" (Open letter to Jesus) in which he described to Jesus' all the crimes that were perpetrated by his followers in his name. Two weeks later he published "The reply of Jesus" in which he, as if Jesus was talking, refuted the charges and replied that he is not responsible for the Christians' crimes. These two letters caused a furore among Christians in Turkey and Europe, putting Nazif on the verge of being put on trial. In the end this did not materialize, Nazif apologizing but being not less critical of the "Crusader mentality" of the imperialist Europeans, targeting Turkey in order to extend their power on its soil. Ibnülemin Mahmud Kemal Inal, (1871-1957) was an Ottoman-Turkish intelligent and 'the last biographer'.‎

‎Very Good Turkish Paperback. Cr. 8vo. (20 x 14 cm). In Turkish. ‎New New English Original bdg. Dust wrapper. Folio. (31 x 22 cm). In English, Turkish and Arabic. 303 p., photos, ills. and documents. The prisoners of war in the Red Crescent archive documents.= Kizilay arsivi belgelerinde savas esirleri. The Turkish Red Crescent (Kizilay, formerly Hilâl-i Ahmer) is a charity organization founded during the late Ottoman period on the model of the Red Cross societies. Its activities in the areas of medicine, care for prisoners of war, and other social services, particularly during the World War I period and the early years of the Turkish Republic, make the archives of this organization a vital resource for historians interested in medicine, public health, war, and charity alike during this formative period. The Red Crescent archives contain a variety of documents pertaining to health and health services in the Ottoman Empire and Republican Turkey. For the Ottoman period (including World War I), these documents almost exclusively concern budget and funding issues along with services pertaining to war, particularly the 1877-78 Russo-Ottoman War (93 Harbi), the Italian invasion of Libya, the Balkan Wars, and of course, the First World War. There is very little overlap between the collections of the Ottoman archives and the Red Crescent. In addition to offering a glimpse at late Ottoman medical institutions, social historians of the Ottoman Empire will also be drawn to documentation regarding Ottoman prisoners of war, which includes letters about and by Ottoman soldiers. The Red Crescent boasts over 300,000 POW cards from all sides of the conflict containing the names and origins of prisoners, their place of capture, and sometimes other biographical or health information. The collection also contain letters and requests from prisoners of war during the conflict. In this regard, researchers of other regions such as Europe or South Asia will find these archives useful as the Red Crescent was the intermediary between the Allies and Allied prisoners held in Ottoman territories...‎

‎MEHMET ÜNIR [ERTEGÜN], (Turkish diplomat), (1883-1944).‎

‎[Photograph of Mehmed Münir [Ertegün] Bey]. Photograph by Pieppe Dupuy & Cie.‎

‎Very Good French Original b/w photograph of Mehmed Münir Ertegün Bey taken in 1932 in Paris. London News and Pieppe Dupuy & Cie.'s stamped on verso. [Photograph of Mehmed Münir [Ertegün] Bey]. Photograph by Pieppe Dupuy & Cie. Münir Bey was a Turkish legal counsel in international law to the "Sublime Porte" (imperial government) of the late Ottoman Empire and a diplomat of the Republic of Turkey during its early years. Ertegun married Emine Hayrünnisa Rüstem in 1917 and the couple had three children, two of whom were Nesuhi and Ahmet Ertegun, the brothers who founded Atlantic Records and became iconic figures in the American music industry. Born in Constantinople to a civil servant father, Mehmet Cemil Bey, and a mother Ayse Hamide Hanim, who was a daughter of Sufi shaykh Ibrahim Edhem Efendi, he studied law at Istanbul University and graduated in 1908. He was a legal counsel for the Ottoman Ministry of Foreign Affairs, when he saw the birth of his first son, Nesuhi, on 26 November 1917, in Constantinople (now Istanbul), during the First World War. Taking part in an Ottoman delegation with a mission to search reconciliation with the Nationalists in Ankara, by the end of 1920, changed his destiny. While the two Ottoman Ministers heading the delegation returned to Istanbul after not achieving an understanding with the revolutionaries led by Mustafa Kemal Pasha he chose to join the National Struggle and remained in Ankara, leaving behind his young wife and three-year-old son, Nesuhi. He became an aide to Mustafa Kemal during the Turkish War of Independence and the chief legal counsel of the Turkish delegation to the resulting Treaty of Lausanne in 1923. After the Western powers recognized the newly founded Republic of Turkey in 1923, he was sent to Geneva to the League of Nations as an observer for the Turkish Republic. During this assignment, he frequently went to Paris for the Ottoman public debt negotiations. Following this posting to the League of Nations, he was appointed ambassador to Switzerland (1925-1930), France (1930-1932), the United Kingdom (1932-1934) and the United States (1934-1944). As the Republic's ambassador to Washington, Ertegun opened his embassy's parlors to African American jazz musicians, who gathered there to play freely in a socio-historical context which was deeply divided by racial segregation at the time. Ambassador Ertegun became the Dean of the Diplomatic Corps in May 1944. He held this last post until he died in Washington, D.C., of a heart attack in November of the same year. In April 1946, a year after World War II had ended, his body was carried back to Istanbul by the USS Missouri and buried in the garden of Sufi tekke, Özbekler Tekkesi in Sultantepe, Üsküdar near his shaykh grandfather Ibrahim Edhem Efendi, who was once the head of the Tekke. (His two sons Nesuhi and Ahmet Ertegun also rest there.). When Ertegun died, there was not yet a mosque in Washington, D.C., at which his funeral could be held. The Islamic Center of Washington was built as a result.‎
