The California Zephyr was a passenger train service that was scheduled to pass through the more spectacular scenery on its route during the daylight. One of its claims to fame was the large Vista Dome clear glass top that allowed its passengers to view the scenery all around them. The route began in Chicago Illinois and ended in Emeryville CA. The train made its first run on March 19 1949 and while the original train stopped in 1970 it has since been operated by Amtrak. At 2438 miles it is one of Amtrak's longest routes and is to this day one of the most scenic - with breathtaking views of the Upper Colorado River Valley in the Rocky Mountains and the Sierra Nevada. Miguel Rio Branco's work has been hailed for the way it vividly depicts the quiet anguish carnal sensuality and explosive violence of Latin America. 1907. Hardcover. Very good condition. An album of wonderfully composed sharp silver gelatin photographs printed on thick photographic paper of steamboat trips by a very talented amateur photographer. These are all original shots: in all there are 99 b&w photographs laid down in the album usually one but sometimes 2 per page and most of the Hudson River. Each is dated in ink and numbered on the lower edge. The photographs were taken in the heyday of the Hudson River steamboats and the photographer does an impressive job of conveying the sense of the grandeur of the river and the joy of viewing the landscape from the deck of a steamer. From the 1880s on no important visitor could claim to have seen America without seeing the Hudson River; the only proper way to see the Hudson River was from the deck of a steamer. There are several impressive steamboat on the Hudson images here including the 'Sagamore' no. 57 the 'America' the 'Kingston' the 'Adirondack' and the 'Albany'. In the 1880s the Hudson River Day Line upgraded its fleet adding bigger and faster boats that were also more elegantly appointed. The Day Line introduced the 'Albany' pictured in this album in 1880. It had an iron hull measured 300 feet in length could accommodate 1500 passengers and claimed to be one of the fastest steamboats in the world. Cabins and common areas were paneled in polished wood and dining rooms on the main deck were adorned by paintings and sculpture by renowned artists. Photographs number 48 to 96 are Lake Champlain and Hudson River views. This includes 7 wonderful shots of the Poughkeepsie Railway Bridge which was completed in 1889 and is now a pedestrian walkway with stunning river views part of the Walkway Over the Hudson State Historic Park. The last 3 of these nos. 80 81 & 82 have been made into a folding panorama showing the entire span of the remarkable bridge. Another memorable photograph shows a steamboat passing Break Neck just north of Cold Spring NY. Other images include Toronto Canada; Niagara Falls; several images of a visit to a water's edge home called "Great Elms" at Kingston Point; Cedar Island; the fort at Kingston; several images taken among Thousand Islands; Lake George; Burlington Vermont; Lake Champlain; Albany NY; near West Point 89 & 90; Battleships on the Hudson off NY City and near Grant's Tomb New York. Tipped on to the front cover is a color printed route map for Lake George and Thousand Island along with a brochure from the Delaware & Hudson Co with a color folding map which extends from Ticonderoga to Lake George. The front cover present with a list of places visited recorded in blue pencil and signed "Ferd. W. Hahn". His rubber stamp on the verso of a few of the images. Oblong 8vo 10 1/2 x 7". String tied card covers the front cover detached loosely inserted. Photographs measure generally 3 x 5 3/8" and are captioned with the place and date and initialed by the photographer. Signed by Chauncey Depew 1834 - 1928 whose ancestors settled in 1685 at the present location of Peekskill NY was president of the New York Central Railroad System and president of the West Shore Railroad Company. This line extended from Weehawken NJ north along the west shore of the Hudson River to Albany NY and then west to Buffalo; it is no longer a passenger line & now serves as CSX Transportation's main freight route from the west to the New York City area. <br/><br/> unknown

New York 1861. Broadside timetable for the Hudson River line from New York to Albany and beyond to Troy. The trains leave from Chambers Street New York. Going north they depart almost hourly and list 13 departures. Going south there are 14 departures. Additionally 3 trains depart from Poughkeepsie; 1 train departs from Peekskill and 2 depart from Sing Sing. With the abbreviated schedule on the front and a full time table 1861 No. 43 on the verso listing all the stops in Manhattan including: Chambers St. 30th St. 52d St. Burnham's Stryker's Bay Manhattan 152nd St. Ft. Washington and Tubby Hook. With Hudson Highlands stops including Peekskill Ft. Montgomery Garrisons and Cold Spring. The Hudson River Railroad was chartered in 1846 to extend a rail line of the Troy and Greenbush Railroad from East Albany to New York City. The president of the Hudson River Railroad in the 1850's and 60's was Samuel Sloan prior to its acquisition by Cornelius Vanderbilt and its merger with the New York Central system in 1869. When the railroad was built as far as Garrison New York in 1848 Sloan built a house there where he passed away at the age of 90 having been involved with railroads for more than half a century. Printed on yellow paper attractively headed by an engraving of a train leaving the depot. 7 x 11" a little rubbed and toned above top fold few very short slits at folds otherwise very good. <br/><br/> unknown

16 facsimile hand written pages with diagrams and three fold out diagrams of Palenque. Folio 12 1/2" x 8 1/2" bound in velum with black label and gilt lettering to cover. Testimonio's Tabula Americae. Limited to 980 copies of which this is 169. Spanish artillery Captain Antonio del Río's ca. 1745-ca. 1789 discovery of tangible evidence of an amazingly rich Maya past and this printed report were the beginning of the study of this truly lost civilization. In May 1786 upon the order of the Spanish Crown Governor and Brigadier General of the Royal Audencia of Guatemala Don José Estachería sent Río to Chiapas to investigate rumors of an ancient city near Santo Domingo del Palenque and determine the origin of its inhabitants. Rio was preceded by other visitors to Palenque the most recent being two brief forays by José Antonio Calderón a local official and Spanish architect Antonio Bernasconi whose sparse observations prompted the order for the full-scale investigation by Río. The Spanish captain made up for his lack of antiquarian training with his zeal hiring seventy-nine Maya locals to assault with crowbars and axes the abandoned tree-engulfed seventh-century city of Palenque. In his report Río describes and comments on the hieroglyphs he saw. Río sent his manuscript report to Guatemalan Governor José Estachería and it was preserved in Madrid. Almendáriz's original drawings were recently found in a private European collection and published: Estampas de Palenque not included here Madrid: Testimonio 1993. After the end of the Napoleonic Wars the author's manuscript and Waldeck's drawings re-emerged in a still mysterious manner to be published in England. Publisher Henry Berthoud bought the manuscript from a mysterious Dr. McQuy McQueen in Jamaica at the end of April 1822. Capitalizing on public interest in American indigenous cultures as well as in Romantic ruins Berthoud published Rio's work in hopes of a popular bestseller which might otherwise have been lost.Condition:A Fine copy.
