(mm. 183x112), affascinante legatura in p. marocchino blu, sottili cornici dorate e decorazioni di foglie ai quattro angoli con, al centro del piatto anteriore, due comici personaggi intarsiati a colori (bianco rosso verde e argento) e la scritta “If I can wheedle a knife or needle why not a silver churn?” e a quello posteriore un giullare a colori ocra e verde con in mano una pillola dorata e la frase “For he who’d make his fellow-creatures wise should always gild the philosophic pill!” - firmata “Bound by Riviere & Son“ al risguardo con preziosa dentelle dorata, tagli pure in oro, in astuccio. Il volume, di pp. (6),698, raccoglie il gruppo completo di tredici operette scritte da Gilbert & Sullivan e così chiamate perchè venivano messe in scena al Savoy Theatre di Londra. La Legatoria Riviere fu una delle più importanti del West End londinese dove operò fra il 1840 e il 1939. Le loro superbe legature erano molto apprezzate dai bibliofili per la qualità e l’attenzione al dettaglio e ricevettero commissioni anche dalla Regina Vittoria e dalla famiglia reale. La dicitura “Riviere & Son” apparve a partire dal 1880 quando Robert Rivière passò la sua attività al genero Percival Calkin. Esemplare in perfetto stato.

(mm. 155x94), 2 volumi in 1, mz. pelle coeva, fregi e tit. oro al dorso, tagli azzurri, pp. XXXVI,278,(2); 394,(2); ben illustrati, come da indice, da 7 tavv. inc. in rame e colorate a mano che raffigurano per lo più animali; da 1 carta geografica pure inc. in rame (con i confini colorati a mano) del Paraguay e della provincia di Buenos Aires, più volte ripieg., oltre a un “quadro che presenta lo stato del commercio in tutti i Porti della Plata”. Resoconto dei viaggi fatti da Felix de Azara (1742-1821), nobiluomo geografo, naturalista, ingegnere militare e antropologo spagnolo. Fanno parte della "Raccolta di Viaggi dopo quelli di Cook" (tomi XXXIII-XXXIV). Mancano i due occhietti; una carta con antico restauro per mancanza solo marginale, altrimenti esempl. ben conservato.

Le illustrazioni erano poste nella prima pagina, nelle pagine centrali e nell'ultima facciata. Di grande fascino e molto ricercate per le illustrazioni, sono anche estremamente interessanti per le succinte ma pregnanti notizie sui luoghi. In perfetto stato.

8vo., ?Third Edition, with a lithographed frontispiece (original tissue guard present), engraved and printed titles, 11 lithographed plates (one depicting flies; all original tissue guards present) and 10 woodcut illustrations in the text, frontispiece and illustrated title mildly foxed; original ribbed green cloth, gilt back, yellow endpapers, uncut AND PARTIALLY UNOPENED, a remarkably bright, clean, crisp copy. With the fine nineteenth century engraved armorial bookplate of Henry Ashworth James on front paste-down, 8pp publisher's catalogue bound in at end and single-leaf prospectus for the enlarged edition of Lloyd's Field Sports tipped in. The illustrations are by Haghe, Landseer and Williams from paintings by Wilkie, Landseer, Simson and Cooke. 'Next to Walton himself, there's no more engagingly discursive and allusive writer in the language. For the feel of fishing, the sense of it, I almost said the taste of it, I know of no other to place him beside' (Gingrich). A lovely copy of the best reissue; Scrope's classic treatise was first published in 1843. James was owner of Hurstmonceux Place in Sussex.
