It helped that he was an aristocrat and came from money. From 1948 to 1968 he lived off and on at "Camusfeàrna" which is what he called his remote house on the coast of the West Highlands. He had many adventures there most of which centered around his interactions with various animals -- including stags wildcats seals porpoises killer whales and numerous wildfowl -- but the stars of his naturalist world were a handful of otters. The beauty wonder and humor of this book will gently surface with a ring of bright ripples in the waters of you mind. I am never able to remember this book without simultaneously wanting to laugh and to cry-and always with a sense of awed wonder. This is the true story of Gavin's befriending of otters or perhaps we should say of the otters' decision to befriend Gavin. Beginning his study with the cow he gives an account of the improved breeding and feeding methods that make todays cow a totally different beast to that of the Tudor farmer. A chapter is devoted to the cultivation of fodder crops and another to the comfort of the cow for as the author states pleasant conditions are an important factor in encouraging its productivity. The dairy industry no less than any other in the 19th century was the scene of numerous devices and inventions designed to improve milking methods. This together with the development of the sale of milk in liquid form is discussed in later chapters.
