Il Baratieri nacque a Condino l'12 nov.1841 e morì a Sterzing nel 1901. Partecipò alla spedizione dei Mille, poi si arruolò nell'Esercito itaòiano, dove divenne colonnello. Con lo pseudonimo di "Fucile" scrisse diversi articoli sul Fanfulla. Convinto sostenitore della politica coloniale in Africa, nel 1876 fu deputato per 7 legislature. Nel 1887 ebbe il comando di vari battaglioni nel Corpo di spedizione in Africa, nel 1891 ebbe il comando di tutte le truppe e poi fu governatore della Colonia Eritrea. Tra il 1894 e il 1896 prese Cassala, Coati, Senafè, ma dopo la rotta di Adua, subì un processo e fu esonerato dall'esercito. Si ritirò ad Arco, dove nel 1898 pubblicò le Memorie d'Africa, s'ammalò gravemente, morì nel 1901 e fu sepolto ad Arco. Questo vol. contiene anche lo stato di servizio del generale, le note biografiche dei vari mittenti e destinatari del carteggio, oltre al vastissimo carteggio.

Stuart's Confederate cavalry, was riding north to get around the Union army. It met and attacked a Federal cavalry regiment, driving it through the streets of Hanover. Brig. Gen. Elon Farnsworth's brigade arrived and counterattacked, routing the Confederate vanguard and nearly capturing Stuart himself. Stuart soon counterattacked. Reinforced by Brig. Gen. George A. Custer's Michigan Brigade, Farnsworth held his ground, and a stalemate ensued. Stuart was forced to continue north and east to get around the Union cavalry, further delaying his attempt to rejoin Robert E. Lee's army, which was then concentrating west of Gettysburg. 317 p. Damp stained. First leaf soiled. Uncut and unopened. Small 4to. Disbound. Fitz John Porter (1822-1901) was a career U.S. Army officer and a Union general in the American Civil War. His military career was ruined by an unjust court martial called by military and political rivals. Porter's corps was sent to reinforce Maj. Gen. John Pope in the Northern Virginia Campaign, a reassignment that he openly challenged and complained about, criticizing Pope personally. During the Second Battle of Bull Run, on August 29, 1862, he was ordered to attack the flank and rear of "Stonewall" Jackson's wing of the Army of Northern Virginia. He received a message from Pope directing him to attack the Confederate right (which Pope assumed to be Jackson on Stony Ridge), but at the same time to maintain contact with the neighboring division under Gen. Reynolds, a conflict in orders that could not be resolved. Pope was apparently unaware that Confederate Gen. Longstreet's wing of the army had arrived on the battlefield and the proposed envelopment of Jackson's position would have collided suicidally with Longstreet's large force. Porter chose not to make the attack because of the intelligence he had received that Longstreet was to his immediate front. Pope was infuriated and accused Porter of insubordination. Porter remained in command of the corps through the Maryland Campaign and the corps served in a reserve position at the Battle of Antietam. On November 25, 1862, Porter was arrested and court-martialed for his actions at Second Bull Run. By this time, Gen. McClellan had been relieved by President Abraham Lincoln and could not provide political cover for his protege. In fact, Porter's association with the disgraced McClellan and his open criticism of Pope were significant reasons for his conviction at court-martial. The officers of the court were appointed by Secretary of War Edwin M. Stanton, who detested McClellan, and most of those officers received promotions after they delivered their verdict. Porter was found guilty on January 10, 1863, of disobedience and misconduct, and he was dismissed from the Army. He spent most of the remainder of his life fighting against this injustice. In 1878, a special commission under General John M. Schofield exonerated Porter by finding that his reluctance to attack Longstreet probably saved Pope's Army of Virginia from an even greater defeat. Eight years later, President Chester A. Arthur reversed Porter's sentence and a special act of the U.S. Congress restored Porter's commission as an infantry colonel in the U.S. Army, backdated to 1861, but without any back pay due. Two days later, August 7, 1886, Porter, vindicated, retired from the Army at his own request. SCARCE. SHELF W22

Interessante opera del 1595 sulla storia dell'Ungheria scritta dal notaio veneziano Giovanni Nicolo Doglioni (1548-1629). Doglioni perse la sua famiglia durante l'epidemia di peste del 1576. Si ritirò a vita privata e scrisse storie di Venezia, Belluno e quest'opera, considerata come la prima storia moderna dell'Ungheria. L'autore inizia con la descrizione del paese, il clima, gli abitanti e la lingua. Prosegue con la storia a partire dalla sua occupazione da parte dei romani, gli unni nel IV secolo e l'invasione dei magiari per concludersi con la battaglia di Giurgevo nel 1595 quando Sigimondo Bathery principe di Transilvania venne sconfitto dall'Impero Ottomano. L'opera è in particolare apprezzata per l'accurata descrizione delle campagne turche nel XVI secolo. Subito dopo la carta b4 la mappa ripiegata dell'Ungheria di Girolamo Porro, cartografo ben conosciuto per aver lavorato con Ruscelli e Porcacchi. Antico manoscritto ai contropiatti, al verso dell'ultima pagine e all'ultima carta bianca. In buone condizioni. Copertina in piena pergamena seicentesca con titolo manoscritto al dorso in buone condizioni generali con lievi usure ai margini e dorso. Rottura alla cerniera anteriore. Legatura in buone condizioni ma corpo del libro staccato al piatto posteriore. Pagine in buone condizioni con fioriture e gore d'umidità marginali. Piccolissimo segno di tarlo al margine di piegatura delle prime 25 pagine e da pag. 71 riparato con applicazione di carta da pag. 25 fino a pag. 70 e da p. 89 fino a 102 senza perdita di testo; al margine superiore da pag. 168 alla fine riparato con applicazione di carta senza perdita di testo. In 8 cm 22,5x16,5. Pp. (32)+209+(2). Peso Kg. 0,322. Interesting work of 1595 about the history of Hungary written by the notary from Venice Giovanni Nicolo Doglioni (1548-1629). Doglioni lost all his family during plague epidemic of 1576. He retired and wrote histories of Venice, Belluno and this work, considered as the first modern history of Hungary. The author begins with the description of country, climate, inhabitants and language. Then history from its occupation by romans, huns of IV century and invasion of magyars. It ends witht he battle of Giurgevo in 1595 when Sigimondo Bathery prince of Transilvania was defeated by Ottoman Empire. The work is particularly appreciated for the accurate descriptions of turkish Campaigns in XVI century. After page b4 folded map of Hungary by Girolamo Porro, cartography well known because he worked with Ruscelli and Porcacchi. Antique manuscript in the counterplates, in the verso of the last page and in the last endpage. In good conditions. Full parchment cover of 17th century with handwritten title in the spine in good general conditions lightly worn in the extremities. Crack in front hinge. Binding in good conditions but the body of the book detached in the back plate. Pages are in good conditions with foxing. Very little worming in the folding edge of the first 25 pages and repaired with application of paper from pag. 25 until pag. 70 and from p. 89 until 102 with no loss of text; in the upper edge from pag. 168 to the end repaired with application of paper with no loss of text.
