‎To the Honorable Senate and House of Representatives of the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania the Petition of . blank . That your Petitioners have seen the bills published respecting the Erection of Schools where the Children of the poor may be instructed gratis . we humbly pray that our Schools . may be endowed with a full share and portion of the monies raised by a Tax‎

‎Philadelphia 1797. 1p. plus integral blank. Bifolium. Unbound. Old folds minor separations at fold repaired. Provenance: General Theological Seminary unmarked. 1p. plus integral blank. Bifolium. In 1797 the Pennsylvania Senate passed a bill related to establishing schools throughout the Commonwealth for public education. This petition here un-accomplished but designed for use by various denominational groups to collect signatures notes the passage of the legislation and argues that various religious group have already established schools that provide both secular and religious education:

"We are convinced that Schools ought to be established but we are fully persuaded that their establishment should be conducted and regulated in such a manner that they may not become an injury nuisance or detriment to those good citizens of this State who as members of certain religious societies conscientiously think it their duty not only to confer useful knowledge upon their children but also to instruct them in the religious principles peculiar to themselves."

The petition continues arguing that public funds earmarked for education should be provided for their denominational schools: "Should your Honourable House institute Schools according to the design expressed in the bills above mentioned then we humbly pray that our schools which are already erected or may hereafter be erected in and by any of the Congregations of our profession in this State may be endowed with a full share and portion of the monies to be raised by a Tax and of the funds to be appropriated to any of the Schools contemplated by the said bills and with this provision that such our Schools shall remain under the sold inspection and direction of persons appointed by our respective Congregations for that purpose."

The petition concludes: "As the object of our petition is proper and just and founded on the principles of religious Liberty guaranteed by the Constitution of this State we have every right and reason to expect that our request will be granted: And we shall ever pray."

This is the only example of this petition recorded by ESTC and we cannot locate an earlier example of a petition by a denominational group for public funding of religious education in the United States.

‎
Madrid: Imprenta de D. Miguel de Burgos 1823. 1823. Very good. - Small folio 11-3/4 inches high by 8-1/4 inches wide. Softcover bound in plain brown wrappers. There is a short tear to the tail of the spine and the corners of the covers are creased. 6 unnumbered pages followed by a blank leaf. There are a couple of light spots to the front margin of the first leaf. A clean & bright pamphlet.

RARE First only edition.

When King Ferdinand VII of Spain returned to power in 1814 he repealed the liberal constitution of 1812 the Constitution of Cadiz. In 1820 soldiers preparing for an expedition to reclaim Spanish colonies in South America pledged loyalty to the 1812 Constitution and led by Rafael del Riego revolted against the King's absolute rule. On March 9 1820 Ferdinand accepted the constitution and gave power to the liberal ministers. The 3-year period that followed is known as the "Trienio Liberal". This period of liberal rule in Spain was marked by instability and a faltering Spanish economy. In January of 1823 a secret treaty was signed at the Congress of Verona by the United Kingdom France Russia Prussia and Austria. The treaty gave authority to France to invade Spain and restore Ferdinand VII as the absolute monarch. The King of France Louis XVIII put the Duke of Angouleme in charge of the Army of the Pyrenees also known as the "Hundred Thousand Sons of Saint Louis". It was his mission to overthrow the Constitutional government of Spain and restore Ferdinand VII to his full powers as was agreed to at the Congress of Verona. Angouleme and his army entered the capital of Spain on May 23 1823. There he formed a royalist regency presided over by Carlos Maria Isidro de Borbon the Infante of Spain. The pamphlet at hand is an exposition addressed to the Duke of Angouleme by the Grandee of Spain represented by 36 members of the Spanish nobility who have signed at the end. It is worthy of note that the Grandee's statement is dated May 27 the day after the regency was installed. The statement praises Angouleme and calls for him to quickly unite the King with the nations of Europe.
Madrid: Imprenta de D. ‎Needlework Map of England‎

‎Bristol 1786. Colored silk and wool threads on linen signed "M. Hume". With compass rose and floral cartouche. 19 x 14-1/2 inches. Toning some wear around edges losses to lettering in several spots. In later frame. Colored silk and wool threads on linen signed "M. Hume". With compass rose and floral cartouche. 19 x 14-1/2 inches. A nice example of an embroidered map sampler which were an important component of girls' education in Britain and America from 1770-1840. This one meticulously labels all of the English counties the seas and channels and includes part of Scotland to the north and the east coast of Ireland and is signed by its maker one M. Hume of Bristol.

"One academic subject that was consistently considered important for both boys and girls after reading writing and arithmetic was geography. Geography was considered a science at this time and . it was the first science taught to girls in the US . Many girls were taught to read but not write. With the exception of some diaries or letters or of marginalia there is little to tell us how children learned to read do arithmetic or write. Map samplers . by students are tangible examples of women's schoolwork. These were time-consuming projects normally framed and hung with pride to show a young lady's educational attainments" Tyner Stitching the World. unknown‎

‎(GOLF - INSTRUCTION BOOKS). (MINIATURE BOOKS). JONES, ROBERT T ("BOBBY")‎

‎THE COMPLETE SET OF THREE ANIMATED "FLICKER" INSTRUCTION BOOKS INCLUDING "DRIVER AND MASHIE SHOTS" "BRASSIE AND IRON" and "OUT OF THE ROUGH AND PUTT.‎

‎London: Harrods Ltd 1930s. FIRST EDITION. 76 x 51 mm. 3 x 2". 100 pp.
Original green or orange paper wrappers side stitched titling on front cover and imprint on spine. In a custom-made folding buckram box with book wells for the three books and gilt-stamped marbled paper label inset on spine of the box. Consisting of three bound sets of 50 sequential photographs that when flipped either from back to front or front to back generate a stop motion animation of Bobby Jones demonstrating the proper form for executing a shot with various golf clubs see below. Advertisements on inside wrappers. Donovan & Murdoch 22610. One volume with portions of spine gone at either end with partial loss of imprint wrappers inevitably somewhat soiled corners a bit rounded as expected but still remarkably well preserved especially considering its inevitable hard use being entirely sound and with the photographs in excellent condition.

This is a scarce grouping of some of the most charming sports as well as miniature books we've ever offered for sale. In the 1930s the famous London department store Harrods published a series of so-called sports "flicker" books of which these three are perhaps the most famous other sports books involved cricket tennis lacrosse soccer badminton swimming and greyhound racing. Our three "flicker" books when the pages are riffled with one's thumb or fingers show the famous smooth-swinging American golfer Bobby Jones executing shots with various clubs. The first book #11a in the Harrods series features the driver and the mashie. The modern equivalent for this latter piece of equipment is slightly elusive but the "mashie" is an iron club with considerable loft meant to hit a golf ball a relatively short distance with a high trajectory Jones' "driver" has the same meaning today as it did 90 years ago. The second book features shots with a "brassie" roughly equivalent to today's 3- or 4-wood and an "iron" also called a "driving iron" which is like today's 1- or 2-iron. The third book shows Jones putting and escaping from heavy rough with a high-lofted club like today's sand wedge. It is great fun--not to mention still instructive--to riffle through these photographs watching one of the world's most celebrated golf swings come to life complete with Jones' knickers white shirt and flapping tie. It is also a fact of some interest that this English series would feature an American player at a time when British dominance in golf was beginning to erode. Given the physical use to which these items have been subjected it is difficult to believe that they are still intact let alone that they are solid enough to be handled without worry. - Vgl. STC 1896; ESTC S124314. ◆Half a dozen gatherings a little browned occasional mild foxing or small rust spots additional trivial imperfections otherwise an excellent copy clean and very fresh in a pleasing new binding.

This conversation manual by an Italian teacher based in London offers an intriguing glimpse into the lives and concerns of the wealthier classes in 17th century Europe. An early effort to teach language through dialogue the book is part cultural history part guide to better health and it is clear evidence of the importance of the study of Italian in Elizabethan and Jacobean England. The seven dialogues cover subjects from health to travel to servants with Italian and English text on facing pages. Many of the dialogues begin with phrases that will be familiar to all beginning language students: greeting others selecting items of clothing asking prices or directions ordering food. As the conversations progress they explore various topics that one might expect to encounter in polite society. An early morning exchange between master and servant evolves into a discussion of the importance of sleep the optimal amount of sleep for good health and the significance of dreams. A dialogue that begins with ordering meals leads to an involved colloquy about the benefits and disadvantages of fasting and abstinence; the virtues and defects of bread butter meat dairy and eggs; diet recommendations for the healthy and the sick; the best diet for each season; and the importance of a walk after dinner. Other dialogues include advice for travellers observations on the political situation and life at court and finally a discussion of that most eternally fascinating topic: love. This work is of continuing interest and value to linguists as it documents the Benevento Italian dialect which is in need of preservation. It's an extraordinarily rare book probably because it was the sort of volume subjected to hard use: in addition to ours we could trace only two copies in ABPC and RBH since 1948. printed by T[homas]. ‎(l'Auditeur National).‎

‎L'AUDITEUR NATIONAL. Convention Nationale. Declaration of the Rights of Man. 60 consecutive issues of this significant political journal consisting of numbers 222 through 282 dated "Du mercredi 1 mai 1793" through "Du dimanche 30 juin 1793" "L'an second de la republique Francaise" bound together in one volume.‎

‎Paris: Imprimerie du Journal rue du Foin-Saint-Jacques 1793. 1793. Good. - Octavo 8-1/4 inches high by 5 inches wide. 60 issues bound together into contemporary full vellum with holographic title labels on the spine. Faded ink annotations on the covers would suggest that the vellum covers themselves were recycled at the time from even earlier documents. The covers are stained the labels are chipped and the bottom portion of the spine is heavily chipped. 480 pages in all each issue consisting of 8 pages with a banner title at the head of the first page of each issue and the publisher's credits printed at the bottom of the last page of each issue. The bottom front corners of the pages are heavily dampstained. There is minor worming with very slight loss to the first issue #222 and a very minor wormhole to issues 233 through 235 with occasional loss of a letter. A small piece torn from the bottom corner of the last leaf of issue #227 results in the loss of but one letter. Pages 5 and 6 of issue #244 are torn but without loss although there is some slight loss to pages 6 and 7 where the pages once stuck to each other. Several page corners are creased. There is some rare occasional underlining in ink with even fewer discreet marginal annotations. A good consecutive run of this scarce periodical covering the National Convention during the years it forged France's first republican constitution during the French Revolution.
Originally titled "Auditeur national journal de legislation de politique et de litterature" when it began publication in 1791 the sub-title was removed as of September 22 1792. - Ref.: Eugene Hatin's "Bibliographie historique et critique de la presse periodique francaise.".
This daily evening newspaper provides a day by day account of the events that took place during one of the most remarkable periods in French history. Among the important events of this period were the uprising of the Paris Commune against the Convention the formation of the Extraordinary Commission of Twelve Commission extraordinaire des Douze the revolt of June 2 1793 which led to the expulsion of the Girondists and the rise of the Jacobins the establishment of a maximum price for bread and most important the debate which ultimately led to the ratification on June 24 1793 of the new Constitution. This Constitution included the expanded "Declaration of the Rights of Man and Citizen" Declaration des droits de l'homme et du citoyen. It was this period of time that set the stage for the Reign of Terror.
The publication of the articles chapitres of the first republican constitution also known as the the "Montagnard" Constitution commences in the June 12 1793 issue of the newspaper No. 264. The 36 articles of the DECLARATION DES DROITS DE L'HOMME ET DU CITOYEN are published in the issues of June 24/25 1793. These rights expanded from the 1789 Declaration now included the abolition of slavery the right of rebellion the right to work to public education and public assistance and the right of association.
The writing of this constitution is often attributed to Marie-Jean Herault de Sechelles.
RARE. Molina studied humanities at an early age under the tutelage of one of the great Guatemalan scholars of the late eighteenth century Fray Antonio de Liendo y Goicoechea 1735–1814. He later studied medicine and surgery receiving his degree in 1798. In the years prior to independence from Spain Molina became increasingly involved in politics. He eventually came to lead an unlikely alliance of conservative oligarchs and middle-class elements. Born out of opposition to the captain-general Jose de Bustamante y Guerra this political faction later became the most radical one of the era actively urging independence. The voice of this nascent political party known derisively by its opponents as the cacos or thieves was the newspaper El Editor Constitucional edited by Molina who also wrote the column on physical and moral education.

The text is in Spanish.
Guatemala: Editorial del Ministerio de Educacion Publica, 1954. paperback‎

‎(Mexican Revolution). Armstrong, James H‎

‎THE MEXICAN REVOLUTION. A 6-PAGE AUTOGRAPH LETTER SIGNED. A first hand account of an attack on the village of Zimapan by "rebels" Zapatistas.‎

‎Zimapan Hidalgo Mexico August 7 1935. 1935. Very good. - sc - Six pages consisting of over 1000 words penned on both sides of 3 sheets of 10-1/2 inch high by 8-1/8 inch wide buff-colored paper. In a lengthy letter James H. Armstrong the author of this account responds after reading a book which Mrs. McDougall has sent him. The book Rosa E. King's "Tempest Over Mexico" which had just been published that year has stirred up Armstrong's memories and feelings. He doesn't view the "rebels" The Liberation Army of the South known as the Zapatistas with as much fondness "She rather idealizes Zapata though strangely she makes no mention of his brother who accompanied him all the time and glosses over the terrible cruelty of the Zapatists." He goes on to describe at length an attack by the Zapatistas "When the town was attacked by the rebels for the first time I had advance information from one of the rebel sympathizers who worked for us so was not surprised when a group surrounded the town and demanded that the small garrison surrender or else the place would be taken by 'sangre y fuego' - 'blood and fire!' The town authorities decided to resist and the women and children of the principal families were gathered into the big house." He goes on to describe that night and the "all-day attack" which followed until "through their scouts the rebels received word that a relief column was coming so they retired and that unpleasant spell was over." Describing a subsequent attack he writes of joining the "Jefe Politico a very good friend" who'd organized a little band of volunteers to escort the women as they would all try to reach the next town. The group was overtaken and to protect the women surrendered to the Zapatistas. "As a foreigner I was deputed to approach with a white flag and arrange terms. One of the women gave me her white petticoat to flaunt and up the hill I went." Signed "Jas. H. Armstrong". The pages are folded once horizontally and twice vertically for mailing. There is some minor soiling with creasing to the right edge. Very good.
A very entertaining first hand account of an event during the Mexican Revolution.
The writer James H. Armstrong was an American superintendent of the Hidalgo Copper Mining & Smelting Company in Zimapan Hildago. Zimapan, Hidalgo, Mexico, August 7, 1935. unknown‎
