AM unsigned 19pp recto and verso 4 3/4" X 7 3/4" n.p. n.y. ca. 1870s. Very good. Bit of faint age toning and old folds neither strong nor weakened. Quite attractive and frustratingly cryptic unsigned Autograph Manuscript two-punched at top and string-tied with original pink ribbon. Fascinating firsthand recollections of the writer's early education in a New England country school house apparently penned for some kind of commemoration. All told a dense meaty manuscript that must be read in its entirety to be appreciated. Opens with: "It is a difficult thing to describe an old place which you have not seen for years to a company of friends who have never seen it; a ruler and a compass seem indispensable a rough sketch on paper to show its position and its various surroundings but who among us here can fail to describe most accurately and who can fail to comprehend without the aid of riveted compass and finely pencilled drawings a country school house a New England School house with its ragged walls and still raggeder urchins with its four windows with its one door with its rows of old desks long since hacked by the idlers of other days with its ink spots dropped years before with its benches all scratched over with school boy hieroglyphics and last and not least but first with that old that honorable that respected that indispensable institution to Every New England town the village 'School mom'." He then gives a few vague specifics: "In the years 1847 & 1848 there was a small white house in a village north that has since been torn down. If we were to measure off 200 feet in 27th Street on the lower side of the Street West of the Third Avenue should locate there the Old Academy where two short years we studied. Six young zebras sent from the turmoil of the city to the quiet country there by labor of mind and of body to blend beauty with intelligence alas it was a failure from lack of ingredients ." He describes their beloved "School mom" "She was a nice young lady a little above the medium height with light hair and very mild blue eyes her dress was always plain and becoming. and she was loved by us all young and old thought Miss B. was perfection and how could we help it we fresh from the Schools of Gotham." going at length into her benevolent teaching style and her mysterious personal life. He addresses the family who lived in the house Dominis the appearance of the school and its grounds the pupils' pastimes and pranks the owner of the house "an old Jesuit. always prowling round inserting his long lean crooked nose in the School house. the wealthiest & the meanest" etc. All very Dickensian very Norman Rockwell -- sentimental and charming viewed from perhaps a half century or more later. Penned in brown ink in a handsome easily legible small hand. Although some clues do crop up that may help identify this academy and perhaps the writer we have been unable to do so despite all efforts. unknown

The push for recognizing the importance and place of non-formal education gathered steam in the early 1970s likely the impact of a paper challenging the concept of formal learning being the socio-cultural accepted norm for learning authored by Scribner and Cole and published in Science in 1973 wherein they claimed most things in life are better learnt through informal processes citing language learning as an example. Moreover anthropologists noted that complex learning still takes place within indigenous communities that had no formal educational institutions. <p>Panama circa early 1900s. 1900s. Good. - Fourteen original silver print photographs of the Canal Zone each measuring 3-1/4 inches high by 5-1/2 inches wide. The images include scenes of workers on and debarking from ships people strolling along village or town streets with horse drawn carriages what is likely an official residence and 5 images of construction work on what would later become the Panama Canal. One of the photos depicting construction work is a duplicate. The photographs are slightly curled with creases to the corners of a very few photos and minor chips to the edges of 4 of these. <p>London: Printed for J. Hodges at the Looking-glass on London-Bridge MDCCXL 1740. 1740. Very good. - Octavo 6-5/8 inches high by 4 inches wide. Hardcover bound in full calf with a black leather title label and decorations in gilt within raised bands on the spine. The covers are slightly rubbed and bumped with a minor chip to the head of the spine and a portion of the title label chipped off. 4 346 & 14 pages illustrated with a portrait frontispiece engraved by George Bickham the Younger c. 1706–1771 and an engraved head-piece tail-piece and a formal decorated initial. There are two small pieces out of the front margin of page 3/4 without loss of text and a small tear in the margin of page 65/66 without loss of text. Very good.</p><p>Second edition published in the same year as the first.</p><p>From the library of Captain Colin Campbell of Kilberry with his armorial bookplate with the motto "Ne Oublie Pas" signed "R.M." R. Mountaine on the front pastedown and the ownership names of "Kilberry" and "Minard" handwritten at the head of the title page.</p><p>"CAMPBELL COLIN d. 1782 of Kilberry major of 100th foot obtained an unenviable notoriety in consequence of a fatal assault committed by him on Captain John McKaarg or Macharg a brother officer while stationed at the island of Martinico in 1762. The cause of difference is said to have originated at Jersey where Campbell at that time major-commandant of the 100th foot was obliged to take the payment of McKaarg's company out of his hands owing to the latter's pecuniary difficulties. On the arrival of the regiment at Martinico McKaarg took every opportunity of vilifying Campbell who demanded in writing an explanation. McKaarg replied in a curt letter. Campbell immediately proceeded to McKaarg's tent armed with a bayonet and a small-sword and demanded satisfaction. McKaarg having a broad sword only endeavoured to evade a meeting. Thereupon Campbell struck him several times with his sword. McKaarg was compelled by his antagonist to beg for his life and immediately expired. He had received eleven wounds two of which were mortal. Campbell was arrested and on 6 April 1762 was tried for murder by a general court-martial held at Fort Royal. He endeavoured to prove that McKaarg had fallen in a fair duel. On 14 April the court adjudged Campbell to be cashiered and declared him incapable of serving his majesty in any military employment whatsoever. Pending the king's consideration of the sentence Campbell escaped from the island. Owing to some informalities the proceedings were not confirmed but he was immediately dismissed from the army. . The relatives of Captain McKaarg subsequently brought an action of assythment against Campbell and ultimately damages. were awarded to them. Campbell chiefly resided in Edinburgh where he attracted notice by his foppery and was well known as an antiquated old beau. In the summer he visited Buxton and the other fashionable watering-places of the day. He died unmarried at Edinburgh in 1782 and his estate at Kilberry in Argyllshire descended to his nephew." The Oxford Dictionary of Biography gives Campbell's death date as 1798.</p><p>"The action of assythment is now no more than a legal antiquity but in 1767 we find its scope and character were the subject of much discussion in the Court. It appears that while the 100th Regiment of Foot had been fighting the French in Martinique Captain Colin Campbell of Kilberry had killed Captain Macharg a brother officer in a quarrel. For this offence he was cashiered by sentence of court-martial. Captain Macharg's relatives brought an action of assythment in the Court of Session. In the defence of Captain Campbell it was pled that assythment was a proceeding for infliction of a fine and not for payment of damages and that Captain Campbell having already been tried and punished could be liable to no further legal proceedings for the same offence. Assythment was said apparently with reason to have been instituted to take the place of the right of private vengeance which early law allowed to the relatives of a murdered man and to have been regarded more as a criminal penalty than as a civil reparation. His counsel quoted Balfour's Practicks to the effect that assythment was paid 'to the kin bairins and freindis in contentation of their damnage and for pacifying of their rancor' and Bankton who had laid it down that assythment was given to the wife and nearest. of-kin 'that they might be reconciled to the manslayer.' Captain Macharg's relatives however were successful in maintaining on the other hand that assythment was an action for payment of reparation and not of a fine and the Court remitted to the Lord Ordinary to fix the amount." pp. 66, (14) [Short Hand Alphabets], (8) [Benn Pitman's Descriptive Catalogue]. Fully engraved. Title page elaborately decorated with a border of lilies. Text ruled in black throughout. Inked ownership of C. A. Hughes on front paste down. All edges marbled. 180mm. Original full cloth binding lettered in gold and embossed in blind. Hardbound. Very good. English born Benn Pitman (1822-1910), assisted his brother Isaac in perfecting the latter's system of shorthand phonography (1837). From 1843 till 1852 he lectured on the system throughout Great Britain, and had a large share in compiling his brother's text-books. At Isaac's request he came to the United States in January, 1853, to give instruction in phonography, and settled at Cincinnati. In 1855 he discovered the process of producing relief copper-plates of engraved work by the galvanic process known as electrotypes, for which he was awarded a silver medal by the Cincinnati Mechanics' Institute. The following year he succeeded, in connection with Dr. J. B. Burns, in producing stereotype plates by the gelatine process in photo-engraving. From 1865 to 1867 he acted as the official stenographer during the trials of the assassin, of President Lincoln, the "Sons of Liberty," the Ku-Klux Klan, and other similar government prosecutions. He also edited and compiled the printed reports of these trials. In 1873 he abandoned reporting and became connected with the school of design, now the art academy, of the University of Cincinnati. His object was to secure the development of American decorative art and to open up a new profession for women. SHORTHAND x2

HOLOGRAPH LETTER SIGNED by the Austro-Hungarian General LUDWIG VON BENEDEK penned on Field Marshall Graf Radetzky's letterhead requesting that COUNT FRANZ FOLLIOT DE CRENNEVILLE forward a letter to the Sicilian Recruitment Commander.
<p>Verona January 2 1851. 1851. Fine. - Over 40 words penned in a secretarial hand on Field Marshall Graf Radetzky's 12-3/4 inch high by 8-5/8 inch wide creamy white embossed stationery with an attached blank leaf. General Ludwig von Benedek requests that Count Crenneville forward a letter to the Sicilian Recruitment Commandant Count Heininger. Roughly translated the letter reads as follows: "To His Honorable the Imperial Royal Mr. Major General and Troops-Brigadier City and Fortress Commandment in Liverno etc- Count Crenneville in LIvorno. Your Honor may please have the enclosed letter delivered to the Royal Sicilian Recruitment Commandment Count Heininger." Signed "Benedek". Folded for mailing else fine.</p><p>Also known as Lajos Benedek the Austro-Hungarian general Ludwig von Benedek 1804-1881 is best remembered for his career ending defeat when commanding the Imperial Army at the Battle of Koniggratz against the Prussian Army. He had many previous successes particularly in leading troops at the Battle of Gyor in Hungary in 1849 to strike down the rebellion. Seriously wounded at the subsequent battle in Szoreg he was awarded the Military Merit Cross appointed regimental colonel and made chief of staff to Field Marshall Radetzky in Italy.</p><p>The Austrian artillery general Franz Folliot de Crenneville 1815-1888 served as Oberstkammerer to Emperor Franz Joseph.</p> Verona, January [?] 2, 1851.
