Frey ... wünscht u.a. eine zweckmäßigere Behandlung des sprachlichen Unterrichts (mit einem Kapitel, wie man innerhalb eines Jahres jede beliebige Sprache erlernen kann), betont die Übung und Stärkung des Gedächtnisses und empfiehlt die Unterweisung der Kinder in der Stenographie (Tachygraphie) sowie in den Turn- und Waffenübungen" (ADB VII, 362). Die kleine Schrift war zuerst 1628 in Paris erschienen. ‎Hieronymus Freyer war Inspektor des Pädagogiums in Halle, gewissermaßen der Eliteschule unter den Franckeschen Anstalten. Hier wurden Kinder der vornehmen Stände unterrichtet. Entsprechend ihrer späteren Stellung im gesellschaftlichen und öffentlichen Leben gehörten Übungen in lateinischer und deutscher Rhetorik zum festen Bestandteil des Lehrplans. Für diese Übungen war das vorliegende Lehrbuch bestimmt.
