‎RARE FIRST EDITION of PART ONE ONLY of an early Hebrew study book written . Hyman Hurwitz (1770-1844) - a learned Jew who became first professor of Hebrew at University College, London. This study book was written when the author conducted a private academy for Jews at Highgate, where he established a close friendship with Samuel Taylor Coleridge and corresponded with him. Coleridge once described Hurwitz as "the first Hebrew and Rabbinical Scholar in the Kingdom". In 1828, on Coleridge's recommendation, Hurwitz was elected professor of the Hebrew language and literature at University College, London. 200x130mm. XX+144 pages. Brown leather Hardcover with gilt framing. Gilt inscription on front cover ('as a token of respect from the author'). Cover detached, rubbed and peeling. Cover edges and bottom corners worn/peeling. Cover upper corners chipped. Spine missing. Ink slightly stuck to pages. Ex-libris sticker on front inner cover upper corner. Endpapers, whitepages and title-page age-stained. Some pages slightly age-stained. Front whitepage edge slightly torn. Binding slightly loose and visible between several pages. Pages yellowing and wavy. [SUMMARY]: This extremely rare first edition of a 19th-century Hebrew textbook for English speakers has sustained some damage to cover and binding, but is otherwise in good reading condition.
