Der erste Teil mit Ratschlägen zum Berufseintritt und für den "künftigen Umgang mit Menschen". Der zweite Teil enthält "merkwürdige Lebensregeln aus des Grafen von Chesterfield Briefen an seinen Sohn" in Campes Bearbeitung. Ab der dritten Auflage (1790) erschien das Werk völlig umgearbeitet, wobei Campe die Briefe des Grafen Chesterfield herausnahm und als eigene kleine Schrift unter dem Titel 'Klugheitsregeln für Jünglinge' edierte (vgl. Handb. KJL III, 157 f).‎
