Reading Maps. Basic Instructions for Reading Maps CITANJE KART
Kamnik district Slovenia: Tehnika RK VI 1943. 30pp. 8vo mimeographed text with images original tan wrappers with mimeographed cover.

This rare surviving pamphlet from World War II was produced by the Yugoslav Partisans the most accomplished armed resistance movement against the Axis occupation of Europe. Starting out as a guerilla group the Partisans soon created a complete underground society based on Communist principles including schools government and medical institutions financial systems and publishing presses. This pamphlet produced by one such press likely hidden in the mountains or forests of Slovenia addresses an emergent need in such a new clandestine society: that for maps. It proceeds in logical order: geographical vocabulary instructions for making field maps and later more sophisticated and symbolic drafting techniques. Within this technical know-how it also communicates tactical military advice that the Partisan guerillas employed in their battles with Axis armies. This tactical quality of the publication is most in evidence in the pamphlets many striking diagrams which demonstrate the importance of visual knowledge in situations of survival.

This pamphlet was one of many Partisan publications designed to educate protect and encourage members of the movement. It is particularly fascinating for its simple means of production since the secrecy of Partisan operations limited them to mechanical methods such as mimeographs--in witness here--as well as heliotypes linocuts and typewriting. Given its fragility the pamphlet is in excellent condition with clean text. Slight stains and some very small tears in margins. As one of the few Partisan publications on cartography this pamphlet is a rare and fascinating record of the World War II resistance.

Tehnika RK VI unknown

Puerto Rican Elementary School
Photo Archive of Puerto Rican Elementary School Class Portraits ca. 1940s-1961
1940. Puerto Rico Education Industrial era Puerto Rico elementary school class photo archive. Three vintage silver gelatin black-and-white photographs each mounted on photo studio original boards with decorative borders. Two are early prints circa 1940s; the third is dated 1961. Each measure about 7" x 9".

This evocative trio of Puerto Rican school photographs captures diverse elementary-age students posed in front of their local schools documenting a pivotal era of transformation in the island's social and educational landscape. One of the earlier cabinet cards features a group of students seated outdoors with a teacher or administrator standing behind them; the setting includes neoclassical columns and a colonial street with visible signage. Another card marked "Escuela No. 29" shows a racially integrated group of students with the school's flag held at the center of the image. The final print dated 1961-declared "Año de la Educación" Year of Education in the printed caption-presents a classroom posed beneath a prominently displayed Puerto Rican flag reflecting both a growing sense of national identity and post-war political shifts toward public investment in education. These photographs span a transformative period in Puerto Rico's 20th-century history as the island transitioned from an agricultural economy to a more industrialized state-supported system under Operation Bootstrap Operación Manos a la Obra. Begun in the late 1940s and accelerated through the 1950s and early 1960s the program prioritized urban development mass education and labor force modernization. The 1961 card framed by official state messaging reflects this emphasis-part of Governor Luis Muñoz Marín's vision of expanding universal literacy and integrating Puerto Rican youth into a skilled industrial economy. At the same time these images document the continued presence of racial and class diversity within public schools signaling the layered complexities of colonial modernity and U.S. influence on the island's educational and political systems.

Mild surface soiling and edge wear to the mounts with light silvering to the gelatin surfaces of the two older prints. Overall very good condition. A rare and compelling visual record of Puerto Rican childhood education and racial integration during a formative mid-century era of political and economic redefinition. unknown

Pupils of Sixth Grade, Corbin St School
A Short History of Cabarrus County and Concord: Yesterday and Today cover title
Concord NC: Snyder Ptg. Co. 1933. First Edition. Staplebound. Near fine. 60pp. illustrated. A crisp clean copy near fine in the publisher's stapled wraps. Very faint flattneed vertical crease throughout. Contents clean and bright. A curious volume of local NC history apparently produced with some adult supervision by a sixth-grade class in Concord NC then a rural area and now part of the greater Charlotte metropolis. Strikingly there is a reverent photograph of a placard monument honoring the Ku Klux Klan's activities during Reconstruction alongside less controversial portraits of notable city fathers and historical events. The book is dedicated to the "Cabarrus Black Boys." This was a group of white men who in 1771 raided a British military storage house disguised as either African-Americans or Native Americans as part of the wiser "Regulator Movement" of rural North Carolinians against colonial government taxes and other policies preceding the American Revolution by several years and certianly anticipating it. The pamphlet is rare in commerce; we haven't found a single copy offered at auction in the past half century. The dozen or so copies in worldwide libraries are all--but one--in North Carolina. Not in Thornton. (Snyder Ptg. Co.) unknown
