‎"""Dans la première partie (les trois premiers modules) les rationnels absolus sont introduits comme ensemble de nombres destinés à mesurer des longueurs, des masses et des capacités à partir d’une unité arbitraire et à prévoir, par le calcul, le résultat d’opérations physiques d’addition, de soustraction, de multiplication et de division par un entier[1]. Le classement des commensurations ou des fractions équivalentes, permet de bien distinguer ces représentants polymorphes des rationnels eux-mêmes qui sont les mesures dont on a besoin.Dans la deuxième partie, (les modules 4 à 7) les enfants prennent conscience des difficultés à mettre en ordre effectivement les fractions, à évaluer leurs différences, à les localiser et à conserver avec elles les habitudes développées avec les nombres naturels pour les toutes les opérations élémentaires coutumières aux mesurages. Et c’est d’eux-mêmes qu’ils choisissent le filtre des décimaux pour « représenter » les rationnels ou, pour mieux dire, pour les approcher avec une précision contrôlable. Ils finissent par disposer la suite des opérations nécessaires – des divisions naturelles- comme une opération unique qui « ressemble » à une division mais qui ne sera reconnue comme telle qu’après d’autres aventures.La troisième partie (les modules 8 à 11) introduit alors les rationnels comme des fonctions et des rapports scalaires.La leçon sur le puzzle fait de cette introduction l’objet d’une nouvelle aventure sur les conditions de la conservation des rapports. Ils définissent ainsi la linéarité par une critère sans mystère : l’image de la somme doit être la somme des images, contrairement à la tradition qui se réfère à une forme, plus mystérieuse et toujours difficile à concevoir pour certains élèves, la « proportionnalité ». L’étude des similitudes géométriques fournit aussitôt l’occasion d’étendre à un ensemble de fonctions l’usage des rationnels et des décimaux mesure. Ordonner les agrandissements conduit à revisiter des rationnels et des décimaux et à réfléchir aux changements d’unités et aux applications réciproques. La structure ainsi construite est celle des fractions comme opérateurs scalaires.Ensuite, dans la quatrième partie (modules 12 et 13) la recherche de nouveaux emplois pour les applications linéaires conduit les élèves à retrouver les usages courants des fractions (pourcentages, échelles, taux, degré, etc.) ainsi que la traduction des opérations et la faune des vocabulaires spécialisés qui leur sont associés (ex. prendre une fraction pour dire multiplier par cette fraction). Elle les conduit rapidement à l’étude des applications linéaires « externes », c’est-à-dire entre des grandeurs de nature différentes et par conséquent accompagnées d’une « équation aux dimensions ». Certaines sont déjà bien connues des élèves (prix/quantités, d’autres sont nouvelles (distance /consommation, vitesse, densité, débit,…). Nous retrouvons l’usage classique de ces visites dans leur rôle de révision d’illustration et d’enrichissement des concepts, d’exercices d’apprentissage, et d’initiation à l’usage ordinaire des mathématiques élémentaires.Le concours d’énoncés proposés par les élèves leur donne l’occasion de poser des questions et de discuter de leur intérêt (et pas seulement d’y répondre). Nous tentions de développer leur intérêt et leur culture des problèmes. C’est l’occasion de revisiter toutes les interprétations des divisions.La cinquième partie amène les élèves à considérer, à utiliser et à calculer les compositions d’applications linéaires, leurs décompositions en applications naturelles et les applications inverses (ils ont déjà rencontré les réciproques)[2]. Ils peuvent ainsi exprimer toutes les interprétations des rationnels – comme mesures, rapports, applications linéaires avec les mêmes symboles, ceux des fractions.Une sixième partie était prévue mais n’a pas pu être expérimentée car elle aurait dû se dérouler pendant la première ou la deuxième année du collège. Elle consistait d’abord à symétriser le groupe additif en créant les rationnels relatif et en achevant la construction du corps des rationnels. L’introduction du symbolisme algébrique permettait alors la formalisation des définitions des quelques termes métamathématiques utiles et celle des démonstrations produites spontanément à l’école primaire.""
