Scattered foxing lacks front free endpaper rear endpaper dirty light rubberstamp on title page Good. <br /> <br /> Lucretia "past forty and buxom" and Lino a young boarder who claimed to be the son of the Spanish governor of California became lovers; a decision was reached to rid themselves of Lucretia's inconvenient husband. <br /> "Five weeks after he arrived Lino purchased a quarter of a pound of arsenic from a Philadelphia druggist explaining that he used it in stuffing birds. The following day Mr. Chapman was taken ill; four days later he was dead." Soon thereafter the lovers "were quietly married in New York.Almost immediately the true character of the Spanish adventurer came out with the disappearance of the family silver and other obvious signs of his chicanery." His activities came to the attention of the police who decided to investigate Mr. Chapman's death. They discovered that "he was heavily dosed with arsenic" and arrested them both. <br /> This book contains all the material on Lucretia's trial. Lino was tried separately convicted and executed. Lucretia was acquitted. "It is difficult to tell whether they had acted in concert in the murder; at least the jury gave her the benefit of the doubt" quotations from McDade.<br /> McDade 169. Du Bois (fand) wohl in Berlin seine große Bewunderung für den deutschen Kanzler Otto von Bismarck: "Er formte aus einer Masse sich zankender Völker eine Nation. [?] Dies ließ mich ahnen, was die amerikanischen Schwarzen tun müssen: mit Kraft und Entschlossenheit unter fähiger Führung voranmaschieren." Nach seiner Rückkehr promovierte er 1895 als erster Schwarzer in Harvard; sein Thema war der transatlantische Sklavenhandel. Trotz bester Noten blieb ihm eine wissenschaftliche Karriere an den renommierten Universitäten verwehrt, und er nahm 1895 eine Lehrerstelle am Wilberforce College in Ohio an. Ein Jahr später bekam er einen Forschungsauftrag in Philadelphia, die Lehre blieb ihm aber verwehrt. Mit der Veröffentlichung seiner Forschungsarbeit über die Situation der Schwarzen in Philadelphia gelang ihm sein wissenschaftlicher Durchbruch als erster schwarzer Soziologe. Von 1897 bis 1910 hatte er eine Professur für Geschichte und Wirtschaftswissenschaften an der schwarzen University of Atlanta inne, die er für weitere Studien über die Situation der schwarzen Bevölkerung vor allem in ländlichen Gegenden nutzte. Gleichzeitig publizierte er eine Reihe von Aufsätzen und gründete mehrere Zeitungen. Während des Jahres 1900 nahm er an der ersten Pan-Afrikanischen Konferenz in London teil und wurde dort bekannt durch seine Proklamation To the Nations of the World: "The problem of the twentieth century is the problem of the colour line." It gives recipes for different medicines and the attributes ascribed to the medicines and herbs. Jean Du Boys was born at Lille studied at Louvain and practiced at Valenciennes. In 1562 he became professor at the recently founded University of Douai. He is the author a few other works.
