Morals and Manners Among Negro Americans
Atlanta: Atlanta University Publications 1914. 1st. Softcover. Very Good. Softcover. First edition. 137pp. Printed gray wrappers. Minor chipping on a few leaves. Corner of title page discreetly reinforced with archival tape.

This volume issued under the patronage of the Trustees of the John F. Slater Fund records the proceedings of the 18th Atlanta University Conference held on May 26 1913.

Directed and largely authored by W.E.B. Du Bois the series of annual Atlanta University Studies 1896–1914 represents the first sustained data-driven investigation into the social economic and educational conditions of African Americans in the post-Reconstruction South.

Conceived by Atlanta University president Horace Bumstead and carried forward by Du Bois these conferences brought together scholars educators and reformers to address pressing issues of Black life with empirical rigor years before the professional discipline of sociology was fully established in the United States.

Though Du Bois’s name often appears only as editor his hand shaped nearly every aspect of these publications. Today surviving copies are scarce; most were later rebound making intact examples like this especially desirable. This 1913 report stands as both a landmark in African American scholarship and a tangible artifact of Du Bois’s groundbreaking sociological project at Atlanta University.

Very rare. Only one record of this selling at auction over the past 20 years. Store case 4. Atlanta University Publications unknown

The Souls of Black Folk

The Souls of Black Folk by W.E.B. Du Bois ISBN-13: 9781604502060 ISBN-10: 1604502061 Publication Date: 4/21/2008 Publisher: Arc Manor Paperback 6 x 9 inches 171 pages In an effort to portray the genius and humanity of the black race Du Bois published The Souls of Black Folk 1903 a collection of 14 essays. James Weldon Johnson said the book's effect on African Americans was comparable to that of Uncle Tom's Cabin. The introduction famously proclaimed that "the problem of the Twentieth Century is the problem of the color line". Each chapter begins with two epigraphs – one from a white poet and one from a black spiritual – to demonstrate intellectual and cultural parity between black and white cultures. A major theme of the work was the double consciousness faced by African Americans: being both American and black. This was a unique identity which according to Du Bois had been a handicap in the past but could be a strength in the future: "Henceforth the destiny of the race could be conceived as leading neither to assimilation nor separatism but to proud enduring hyphenation." Jonathon S. Kahn in Divine Discontent: The Religious Imagination of Du Bois shows how Du Bois in his The Souls of Black Folk represents an exemplary text of pragmatic religious naturalism. On page 12 Kahn writes: "Du Bois needs to be understood as an African American pragmatic religious naturalist. By this I mean that like Du Bois the American traditional pragmatic religious naturalism which runs through William James George Santayana and John Dewey seeks religion without metaphysical foundations." Kahn's interpretation of religious naturalism is very broad but he relates it to specific thinkers. Du Bois's anti-metaphysical viewpoint places him in the sphere of religious naturalism as typified by William James and others.
Arc Manor paperback
