‎GENL GANALIS THE ROBBER AND ASSASSIN WAS DRIVEN DAY AFTER DAY FROM RANCHO TO RANCHO UNTIL HE COULD FIND NO REST IN HIS OWN NATIVE MOUNTAINS" - A small archive of letters sent to Colonel Edward G. W. Butler during his command of the 3rd U.S. Regiment of Dragoons during the Mexican-American War‎

‎Various locations 1848. Card. Very good. There are six stampless folded letters in this archive. Three letters from Butler's wife one from 1847 and two from 1848 regarding family matters and the management of their Louisiana sugar plantation an 1848 letter-order from the War Department Adjutant General appointing Butler to investigate General Winfield Scott's charges against Major General Gideon Pillow an 1848 letter from General John E. Wool regarding occupation duty in Mexico and an 1848 post-war letter informing Butler that he is to be presented with a General Officer's Sword for his performance as the regimental commander of the 3rd U.S. Dragoons and subsequent appointment as the Major General of the Louisiana Militia

The letters Butler's wife Francis Park Lewis sent from Dunboyne their large sugar plantation in Louisiana's Iberville Parish contain a total of about 15 text pages. All are unfranked and un-postmarked suggesting they were likely sent by military courier as all are addressed to "3rd Dragoons U.S.A / Mexico" two in "Care of Major Eastland" at Brazos Santiago Texas. The text is cross-hatched faint and difficult to read although Photoshop manipulation of scans makes it much easier. They concern family news Butler's health and safety "On Thursday I had the happiness of receiving your kind welcome letters . . . and rejoice to find you well although Peace is not yet certain." and Francis's management of Dunboyne during Edward's absence "Write me a letter. . . authorizing me in your name . . . to borrow 20 to 30000$. . . At 6 years what a blessing it would be for we could pay all due and buy negros besides and easily pay principal and interest."

The two-page War Department letter appointing Butler as a member of a court of inquiry with regard to the infamous Scott-Pillow dispute is datelined "Adjutant General's Office / Washington January 13 1848 / General Orders: No. 2". It is unaddressed and without postal markings. The inquiry investigated charges that Pillow - appointed as a Major General by his long-time friend President James K. Polk - published an anonymous letter proclaiming that he was personally responsible for the army's victories at Contreras and Churubusco. When his intrigue was exposed General Scott had him arrested and court-martialed. Although all concerned believed him guilty Pillow escaped conviction and punishment when an associate Major Archibald W. Burns claimed that he had written the anonymous letter. Still Pillow was discharged from the Army following the trial. Interestingly Pillow later served as a general in the Confederate Army where he was widely reviled as cowardly and incompetent. See Sifakis's Who Was Who in the Civil War.

The two-page letter from General John E. Wool Butler's commander during the subsequent occupation of Mexico and one of the most respected and capable commanders of the war is datelined "Monterey / 2d March 1848". It was no doubt hand-delivered as it bears neither an address nor any postal markings. In it Wool apologizes for being too busy to write a formal letter but assures Butler that he approves of "the course you have pursued toward General Garnales and the Mexicans" and clarifies that the reason he issued an "order of amnesty" was "in consequence of the disappearance of the guerrillas. . ." He also assures Butler that he will deal with the Quartermaster's reluctance to provide needed horses for the dragoons.

The final one-page letter in this group was sent to Butler after the 3rd Dragoon Regiment was disbanded and he had returned home to his plantation where he was appointed as a Major General in the Louisiana Militia. It was from a committee representing Butler's "affectionate friends" and datelined "Bayou Goula Aug the 30th 1848." It too was hand-delivered as it bears no postal markings. In it the committee informed Butler that he was to be presented with a sword recognizing that it was through his actions "that Genl Ganalis the Robber and Assassin was driven day after day from Rancho to Rancho until he could find no rest in his own native mountains . . . thereby preventing much loss of valuable lives and property." Butler's sword a M1840 General Officer's Sword was recently sold at Michael Simens' Historical Antiques. Edward George Washington Butler a ward of Andrew Jackson graduated from West Point in 1820. After spending ten years on active duty he returned to Dunboyne his large Louisiana sugar plantation and continue to serve in the Louisiana militia. During the Mexican-American War Butler returned to active service and commanded the 3rd Regiment of U.S. Dragoons. He campaigned in Central Mexico fighting at the Siege of Vera Cruz the Battle of Churubusco and the Battle of Molino del Rey. The dragoons were later assigned to General Joseph Lane and ordered pursue General Santa Anna and eliminate of the Jarauta guerillas. Following the war Butler returned to his plantation. At the onset of the Civil War he refused an offer of a senior command in the Confederate Army.

For more information see Plater's The Butlers of Iberville Parish Louisiana: Dunboyne Plantation in the 1800s "3rd U.S. Dragoons" online at Wikipedia "Wool John Ellis 1784-1869 online in the Handbook of Texas and "Gideon J. Pillow" online at the American Battlefield Trust.

A unique collection of personal letters and documents relating to a prominent though little remembered commander during the Mexican-American War and his wife's life at their Louisiana sugar plantation during his absence. At the time of listing there are no General Butler or Dunboyne Plantation letters or documents for sale in the trade. There are no auction records of General Butler materials at the Rare Book Hub or Worthpoint. OCLC shows only one General Butler item held by an institution; it is a letter to Butler from General Zachary Taylor reporting on the Battle of Buena Vista and discussing Taylor's possible Presidential candidacy See William Reese Co.'s Catalogue 300: One Hundred Rare Americanum. unknown books‎

‎A "WHO'S WHO" GUESTBOOK OF PASSENGERS ON AND VISITORS TO ISAAC STERN'S LEGENDARY STEAM YACHT VIRGINIA; Guest Book of the Virginia owned by New York's legendary department store tycoon Isaac Stern along with Ten Thousand Miles in a Yacht which chronicled its trip up the Amazon River in 1911‎

‎The Virginia's guest register is a bound leather book measuring approximately 8.5" x 10.5" with approximately 250 gilt-edged pages. About 75 of those pages are filled with notes signatures and drawings by visitors and passengers. The cover is adorned with enameled metal ornaments in the shape of New York and Manhattan Yacht Club burgees. The frontispiece appears to be hand-painted and shows the same two burgees with text reading "Steam Yacht Virginia". All of the entries are in ink. In nice shape.

The Virginia was an incredibly luxurious 441-ton steam yacht built in 1899 at Bath Maine for the New York department store magnate Isaac Stern.

Entries in its guest book begin in February of 1900 and contain messages from about 400 people from around the world. I noticed notations from Belgium Cyprus Egypt England including the Isle of Wight Germany Greece India Turkey and the U.S. East Coast in a variety of languages including Arabic English French German Greek and Japanese.

Some signatures are from diplomats consuls foreign ministers military officers and no doubt quite a number of wealthy businessmen financiers and socialites.

Many of the entries refer to attendance at specific events like the Hudson-Fulton Celebration including its Naval Parade the International Yacht Race of 1903 and Yale-Harvard Races. The last entry in the guest book is dated September 25 1910 just before Stern's death.

The accompanying first edition book Ten Thousand Miles in a Yacht chronicles a trip on the Virginia organized by "Commodore" E. C. Benedict a New York financier who chartered the vessel from Stern to make the cruise with ten friends and a crew of 33 officers and men between November 1904 and January 1905. Benedict felt his own yacht was not up to the voyage. Apparently Stern retained the guest book during the voyage as no entries were made during that time.

Contemporary newspaper articles suggest that following Stern's death Benedict purchased the vessel after first chartering it once more from Stern's estate to undertake a second Amazon River voyage. He in turn sold the vessel to F. K. Vanderbilt the grandson of Cornelius. During World War One it was acquired by the U.S. Navy on a free-lease renamed the U.S.S. Vedette and deployed on patrol duty escorting convoys in the Atlantic where it rescued survivors from a torpedoed Greek ship as well as a disabled French seaplane and its crew. Following the war the yacht was returned to Vanderbilt.

Isaac Stern and his brothers sons of German-Jewish immigrants opened a one-room dry goods store in Buffalo New York in 1867 and moved their operation to New York City not far from Washington Square Park the following year. They relocated to 22nd Street near Madison Square Park and continually enlarged their business until it became an enormous and elegant six-story department store known for selling a wide range of goods from working-class merchandise to elegant Parisian fashions coveted by New York's wealthiest women. After the business was purchased by the Allied Stores Corporation Stern's acquired a number of defunct Gimbles and Gertz stores throughout the region. Allied Stores was in turn acquired by Federated Department Stores which in 2001 converted most Stern's stores into Macy's or Bloomingdale's and closed the rest.

A unique first-hand testament to the life of the ultra-rich in the early pre-World War One years in New York City. hardcover books‎

‎RECORD-SETTING NON-STOP THEATRICAL TRAIN TRIP - An archive pertaining to Jarrett & Palmer's famous transcontinental Lightning Express‎

‎
The transcontinental Lightning Express captured the attention of the nation while transporting a theatrical troupe from New York to San Francisco in under 84 hours a record-breaking time for an opening night performance.

The national excitement generated by the arrival of the Lightning Express in Oakland was incredible and not to be again matched until Charles Lindbergh landed the Spirit of St. Louis in Paris fifty years later. This grouping consists of

A rare transcontinental cover franked with a 3-cent green Washington stamp Scott #158 that has been canceled with a circular postmark that reads "Jarrett - Palmer's / Special Fast Trans-Continental Train" and is dated "New York / June / 1-1876 / 12.10 A.M." It bears an oval "4 June / 1876 receiving handstamp from "E. Rass & Co. / San-Francisco". There is an advertising corner card from Leon & H. Blum New York City dry goods merchants.

A postal card Scott #UX3 reporting the arrival of the Lightning Express which is dated "Oakland June 4th" and canceled with a 'circle of Vs' handstamp and a San Francisco postmark. and

A newspaper clipping containing a reproduction of an original newspaper article information about the trip a map showing the location of Jarret and Palmer's Booth Theater across from Madison Square Park and a half-tone photograph of the train after it arrived in Oakland. The article was authored by Clark Kinnaird a long-time newspaper reporter who also wrote a syndicated 'history' column for the New York Journal-American.

Although the envelope has no contents the text of the postal card reads in part:

"Will not visit you and the Centennial but wish we could. The 'Jarrett & Palmer' lightning train arrived at S.F. Safely at about 10 o'clock this morning having half an hour to spare from their schedule time of 84 hours from New York. Great feat & everyone here is enthusiastic over it though few want to try it themselves! Tomorrow's papers will give details - will send."

Lucious Beebe--the renowned author gourmand photographer railroad historian syndicated columnist and all-round social raconteur--vividly described the journey in his railroading classic The Age of Steam

"In 1876 . . . seven full days and nights with changes of cars at Chicago and Omaha were conventional time between New York and the Pacific Coast. When therefore a specially chartered train filled with theatrical celebrities . . . made the passage from coast to coast in the record time of eighty-four hours Americans followed the magnificently publicized event with awed enthusiasm. . . The Lightning Express was chartered by Henry Jarrett of Jarrett & Palmer managers of the Booth Theater in New York to transport the celebrated Lawrence Barrett and a distinguished supporting cast in time for the opening night of Henry V at McCullough's California Theater in San Francisco. The project instantly caught the fancy of the public and fantastic newspaper coverage was accorded the train's departure . . . over the rails of the Pennsylvania and then the Chicago & North Western--Union Pacific-Central Pacific route to California. The actors rode in ornate splendor aboard the Pullman Palace Hotel Car Marlborough while a commissary car carried appropriate food and drink and the scenery rode in a conventional baggage car. All across the continent the train's passing was the occasion for the wildest excitement and at Reno nearing the end of its run its approach was greeted with an exclamatory display of rockets and other artifices de feu. The run over the Central Pacific from Ogden to Oakland a relay of 875 miles including the High Sierra crossing was accomplished by a single engine and a single engineer Hank Small at the driver's side. No. 149 a sleek 4-4-0 achieved immortality overnight. The sooty actors weary but triumphant were met at San Francisco by Warren Leland the manager of the eye-popping Palace Hotel and taken to a breakfast of grilled salmon cucumber salad filet of Beef Bearnaise cutlets of Minden lamb escalloped veal partridges sautéed in champagne grilled Mallard duck asparagus strawberries and three kinds of eggs shirred with mushrooms and rum omelets. . ."

That evening the night of June 4th Jarret & Palmer's Henry V opened on schedule in San Francisco to a sold-out house.

Extremely scarce. At the time of this listing no other Lightning Express items are for sale in the trade. OCLC shows no institutions holding first-hand accounts of the Lightning Express nor any items or mail carried by it. Materials related to the Lightning Express--broadsides tickets passes stereoviews and especially carried mail--only infrequently appear at auction and they are quite expensive when they do generally bring prices between $3000 and $12000.
books‎

‎A bond requiring a white man to appear in court on the charge that he furnished "spirituous liquor" to another man's slave‎

‎Forsyth County Georgia 1848. Unbound. Very good.

In this one-page document bondsmen pledge $100 as a guarantee that:
"Adam Campbell shall personally appear before the Superior Court when held for said County on the fourth Monday in August next then and there to answer . . . for and concerning the offence of a Misdemeanor for furnishing a certain negro man slave by the name of Buc the property of one Captain McQuering with spiritous liquor for his own use. . . ."
Although during the earliest days of slavery in the American colonies slaves were permitted to use alcohol and beer in ceremonies and rituals that they had practiced in Africa as their numbers increased colonial governments began passing laws regulating the practice. By the middle of the 18th century most colonies were severely limiting slaves' access to liquor "based on the notion that Blacks were too irresponsible to be trusted with the use of alcohol or fear that Blacks would be less accepting of the conditions of their servitude more difficult to control and more prone to violence. Concern regarding mass drunkenness and potential revolt was heightened following Nat Turner's and Denmark Vessey's revolts." See Christmom's "Historical Overview of Alcohol in the African American Community" in Journal of Black Studies Jan. 1995.

From the size of Campbell's bond it would appear that he may have previously been convicted for the same crime as in 1848 the Georgia Code specified that if any "person whatsoever shall sell to or furnish any slave . . . spirituous liquor wines cider or any intoxicating liquors for his own use or for the purpose of sale such person so offending shall upon conviction thereof pay a fine of not less than ten dollars nor more than fifty dollars for the first offence and upon a second conviction to be subject to a fine and imprisonment in the common jail of the county at the discretion of the court not to exceed sixty days of imprisonment and five hundred dollars fine. . . ."

Rather scarce. ‎Small archive of Civil War letters written to a wounded member of the 39th New York Volunteer Infantry Regimen The Garibaldi Guard along with the soldier's discharge certificate‎

‎Various locations 1865. Very good. Nine letters written to Stephen H. Gregory a member of D Company 39th New York Volunteer Infantry. Eight were written during April and May of 1865 while Gregory was recovering from wounds at the Homewood Hospital in Washington D. C. The ninth letter is pre-war. Two of the letters are enclosed in mailing envelopes with indistinct postal markings; one of the envelopes is franked with a 3-cent rose Washington stamp Scott #65 the stamp is missing from the other. Gregory's discharge certificate is also included. The letters are all in nice shape; the certificate has some storage folds and minor wear.

The letters are primarily queries from family and friends about his wound "Stephen you had not aut to wash your wound after eny other persons wound for fear of the gang green" his general health "shugar making" and the death and wounding of other local soldiers mixed with considerable hope that Stephen would soon be able to return home.

One letter however also references the assassination of President Abraham Lincoln and the hunt for John Wilkes Booth: "las Friday they is a corpral and three privates to the depo looking for the man kiled abrham linkin and they say that they git 3000 if they git him".

The 39th New York Infantry the Garibaldi Guard was organized in New York City in the Spring of 1861 by Colonel Frederick George D'Utassy under special authority from the War Department. Initially the unit was divided into eleven companies each primarily composed of men of different national heritage; three companies were Hungarian three were German one Swiss one Italian one French one Spanish and one Portuguese. In the Summer of 1864 four companies A through D were mustered out however a new D Company was mustered into service that October from upstate New York.

Gregory was from Lisbon New York and joined D Company while it was being organized at Malone New York. D Company fought in the Appomattox Campaign during March and April and it was during this time that Private Gregory was wounded. Gregory's military records are sparse but they do confirm that he was hospitalized for four weeks although they do not specify where or how badly he was wounded but based on the dates of the letters it must have been some time in April shortly be General Lee surrendered.

A nice collection of letters to a wounded soldier clearly evidencing the love and concern of his family.

books‎

Description from Amazon: Phenomena of concealment set in motion processes of perception provoking a need for disclosure and are projected for our imagination. They identify social political and cultural communication boundary marking and transition areas in the social space and are observed in many places in nature. But what does the conflict between concealment and revelation and communication of our vision mean for the world And what forms and functions of obfuscation can be found in nature and culture The book traces these and similar questions with dialogues between cultural social and natural sciences and it also explores potential and limitations of transdisciplinary work. thanks to Google Translate. ‎Various: Various 1970. First Edition. Very good. Eight posters ca 1970 - 1974; various sizes approx. 38 x 26 and 19 x 27; all in protective laminated sleeves; condition varies from good with nicks to edges creases and closed cuts to margins to very good or better with minor wrinkles and wear. A significant archive of posters they were published at the height of the Cold War and showcased the Bulgarian performing-arts scene under the guardianship of Liudmila Zhivkova 1942 - 1981 - a senior member of the Communist Party and daughter of Bulgaria's Communist Leader Todor Zhivkov. Remembered for her goal to promote the country's culture and arts on the international stage as well as to bring foreign culture to Bulgaria Liudmila was a controversial figure viewed by some as a forerunner of alternative ideas and freedom in the friggidly-unwielding totalitarian bloc and considered a spoiled "Red Bourgeoisie" child by others. At least one of the posters a double-sided one promoting the screening of Mikhai Semesh's Hungarian movie "The Magic Fur Coat" was created by renowned graphic designers Anton Mechkuev 1920 - 2011 and Grigor Angelov 1941 - . Another one for the premiere of the Bulgarian drama "The Best Person I Know" featured beloved Bulgarian actress Nevena Kokanova 1938 - 2000 known as the "first lady of Bulgarian cinema." Several of the posters listed opera and jazz performances a Greek play and puppet shows at several major theaters. One was a propaganda for the "Bulgarian Musical Youth" Movement for all young people who were Komsomol members. Various unknown books‎

‎K 1-mu maia. Proletarskomu prazdniku borby i pobedy To May 1. A Celebration of the Proletarian Struggle and Victory‎

‎Riga: Ts. K. K. P. L. Central Committee of the Communist Party of Latvia 1919. Softcover. Very good. Large printed document; 15 3/4 x 10; single sheet pp. 2; newspaper stock ruled with an intricate border; 1 1/2" loss of paper to upper right corner; crease line through middle; a bit of age-toning; overall in very good condition. Possibly one of the earliest publications of the newly-renamed Communist party of Latvia it was an exuberant call to all working men and women to celebrate for the very first time in Latvia May 1 the day of the victory of the proletariat. The party was initially founded in 1904 and in 1906 after entering the Russian Social Democratic Labour Party as a territorial organization it changed its name to Social-Democracy of the Latvian Territory. In June of 1918 a group of Mensheviks who had been expelled from the latter formed the Latvian Social Democratic Workers' Party. In turn it was renamed the Communist Party of Latvia in March of 1919. Ultimately the party would be banned in 1920 after the Latvian War of Independence. The document in true propaganda fashion rambled on about the evil bourgeoisie's terror and their demise in the hands of the Bolsheviks and the continued need for thwarting the efforts of the world Imperialism. A memorable passage read: "Today the entire European armed proletariat raises their weapons even higher and exclaims - Want war You will perish!" Riga: Ts. K. K. P. L.
