de Bry Theodor; Le Moyne de Morgues Jacques
Hand Colored Engraving from a German Language Edition of Le Moyne's Brevis narratio ca. 1591 from De Bry's "Grand Voyages to the Americas": XXVII. Floridians Crossing Over to an Island to take their Pleasure
1591. Good Condition. Hand colored engraving light foxing and soiling paper thinned in upper margin from prior mounting.

It reads translation from Discovering the New World Based on the Works of Theodore de Bry Harper & Row 1976: As can be seen from the preceding illustrations this area abounds with very agreeable little islands. The rivers are not deep; the pure clear water scarcely reaches the chest. When the Indians want to make an enjoyable excursion with their wives and children they go to these islands. They either swim across the river for they are excellent swimmers or they wade across carrying the little children. In fact the mothers can manage three children at once the smallest on a shoulder clutching its hand and the other two under her arms. With the free hand the women carry a basket full of fruit or other food for the occasion. For fear of meeting enemies the men carry bows and arrows. In order not to wet them they attach the quiver to their hair and hold the bows stretched and ready with and arrow prepared instantly to defend themselves as can be seen in our engraving. The Quest for the Secret Nile: Victorian Exploration in Equatorial Africa
Chaucer Press 2004. First Edition. Large Hardcover. Near Fine/Near Fine. 2004 Large Hardcover. 192 pp. The Nile stretching for a distance of 4163 miles is the longest river in the world. The ancient Greeks were obsessed by the provenance of so much water feeding a river that flowed out of the desert. Aeschylus in 500 BC talked of Egypt being nurtured by the snows. For centuries the only sporadic reports from the heart of equatorial Africa came from Arab seafarers land travellers and slavers. In the mid-1850s in Britain the great thirst for adventure and discovery combined with the challenge posed by the ancient riddle of the secret sources of the Nile and acted like a magnet on men such as Sir Richard Burton Captain Hanning Speke Samuel Baker Dr David Livingstone and Henry Morton Stanley. This gripping account illustrated with many prize-winning photographs traces the tribulations and achievements of the men who walked in the footsteps of Herodotus and carried away the prize: the discovery of the sources of the Nile. NAACP; Freedom Sunday Celebrations; Brown vs. Board of Education
May 17. A Day to Remember. A Day of Decision. A Time of Thanksgiving. A Day of Action. Freedom Sunday
New York: NAACP 1959. Poster on heavy card stock 13 x 10 inches. Some foxing to edges near fine condition overall. Near Fine. In 1959 to commemorate the fifth anniversary of the Brown vs. Board of Education decision the NAACP coordinated a group of celebrations in churches throughout the country to celebrate Freedom Sunday. The effort led by Reverend Edward J. Odom Jr. the NAACP church Secretary involved over 100 local chapters across the country. The celebrations on May 17th were a part of a larger coordinated campaign by the NAACP to register voters raise funds and engage in desegregation projects. Coverage in the mainstream press was scant with several short articles on the celebrations appearing in a range of states including Michigan Alabama and Indiana.

We find no other record of this poster promoting the event which was produced in New York and can't confirm whether it was distributed to local chapters. Overall a visually striking poster commemorating both the landmark court decision and the role that the church would play in the Civil Rights movement in general. NAACP unknown books
