ONLY EDITION OF THIS EXTREMELY IMPORTANT AND RARE MONOGRAPH ON NANTEUIL (the title page says "second edition" because Loriquet's discourse--without the documentation--had previously been published in a periodical). 2 leaves; 154 pp. Aside from Loriquet's comments, this book contains extensive documentation concerning Nanteuil, all published for the first and only time: documents concerning his family, the text of his poetry, his opinions about printmaking, catalogues of all of his works in all media, the inventory of his estate, etc. EDITION LIMITED TO ONLY 100 COPIES, OF WHICH THIS IS ONE OF ONLY TEN COPIES WITH THE ENGRAVED FRONTISPIECE PORTRAIT OF NANTEUIL (by Varin after Nanteuil) IN TWO STATES. Louis Metcalfe, writing about Nanteuil in "Prints and Their Makers" (New York: Century, 1912), states that "In 1854, Charles Loriquet, curator of the library of Rheims, who had just completed a collection of Nanteuil's portraits for the city museum, addressed the Academy at one of its public sittings and eloquently pleaded with the authorities to erect a monument to him who he considered second only to the great Colbert as the most illustrious son of Rheims. His description of the artist and his work created such enthusiasm that he was later induced to publish it, together with some interesting documents concerning Nanteuil. The unique little book found its way into many libraries, private as well as public, and has ever since been unfindable." The copy I offer was in fact Metcalfe's, with his charming engraved bookplate on the front pastedown. Large 8vo. ELEGANTLY BOUND IN 19TH-CENTURY FULL MIDNIGHT MOROCCO BY AFFERNI (signed), with spine, borders, and turn-ins beautifully gilt. (Afferni was a Venetian binder, and his work rivaled that of the best French binders of the day.) All edges gilt. Tiny traces of wear to extremities, else FINE AND BRIGHT. A rare and important book.

Joseph in Prison (an original signed woodcut by Arthur C. Danto)
An original signed woodcut by Arthur C. Danto, executed in 1947 while he was an undergraduate at Wayne State University (he graduated in 1948). In this Expressionist image we see Joseph looking downcast in a dark cell, sitting on a bench with his ankle chained to the floor. 11 1/2" x 8 1/2" (block), 18" x 13" (sheet). Signed (A. Danto), dated ('47), titled (Joseph in Prison), and justified (3/25) in pencil. Only SIX IMPRESSIONS WERE ACTUALLY PRINTED, as indicated by the "6" at lower right (and confirmed by Danto). Monogrammed in the block. This is an extremely fine and rich impression, printed by the artist himself, on fine, thick, brownish-gray laid paper. A few marginal restorations, otherwise in excellent condition. Danto went on to have a successful career as an printmaker during the 1950s. In the early 1960s he turned to the philosophy and criticism of art, the field in which he achieved great acclaim. His early prints, dating from the 1940s, are of the greatest rarity. Possibly a unique survival.

The first 40 pages of volume I supply the earliest critical bibliography of general works on prints, with many works described in exhaustive detail. The ninth volume, present here, is very rare: even Cicognara didn't have it, and apparently didn't know about it. 8vo. Bound in contemporary tree calf (first volume bound in matching, but slightly darker, calf). Light wear to bindings, but very attractive. Various indexes added in manuscript on flyleaves and inserted leaves in a contemporary hand. Internally clean. A very good set. Published over the course of eleven years by three publishers in three countries, complete sets are very rare. Brunet III, 357; Bourcard 81: "Nous estimons trËs particuliËrement cet ouvrage.... Two volumes, complete. AN OUTSTANDING SET OF THESE EXTREMELY UNCONVENTIONAL LIVRES D'ARTISTE, made for the tourist trade on the CÙte d'Azur in the early 1950s. Both volumes are anthologies of texts about the region, and EACH VOLUME IS ILLUSTRATED WITH STUNNING HAND-COLORED MOUNTED SCULPTED PRINTS ("glyptographies") BY MARCEL PAUTOT (21 in the first volume, 18 in the second), titled in manuscript, depicting charming town scenes and breathtaking landscapes. Pautot was a goldsmith by trade, and has used gold dust to color some of the prints. Each edition limited to 500 copies, but many fewer have survived. Printed on laid paper, with the mounted prints on wove paper. Squarish 8vo. "Images de Provence" in publisher's wraps, housed in a custom decorated slipcase. "Images de Provence: Cannes - Grasse" beautifully bound in quarter citron morocco, wraps preserved, with onlaid mosaic of a sailboat on the front cover. BOTH VOLUMES FINE AND BRIGHT. Two of Bocher's outstanding catalogues raisonnÈs bound in one volume: the catalogue raisonnÈ of prints after Baudouin and the catalogue raisonnÈ of prints after Chardin. Also included are extensive catalogues of the paintings of each artist. Both limited to 475 numbered copies: the Baudouin catalogue is one of only 25 copies beautifully printed on fine Whatman wove paper; the Chardin catalogue is one of 450 beautifully printed on fine Dutch laid paper. Folio, quarter morocco over marbled boards. Uncut. Light wear to extremities, else fine.

Veduta del porto di Taranto e del ponte che divide il mar piccolo dal grande
Grande incisione ad acquaforte (cm. 55 x 42) realizzata da Giorgio Hackert sul quadro del fratello Philipp: rappresenta il porto di Taranto. Gli Hackert lavorarono molto in Italia e all’epoca di quest’incisione, probabilmente non di molto posteriore al 1789, data del quadro, erano pittore e incisore di corte presso Ferdinando IV. Il quadro è nel museo della Reggia di Caserta. Negli ultimi anni del secolo sono numerosi i porti italiani ritratti da Philipp: la didascalia recita “Preso dal quadro originale che fu parte della collezione dei porti delle due Sicilie ordinata da S.M. il Re. Ottime condizioni, molto raro. A big etching engraved by Georg Hackert on a painting of his brother Philipp: the subject is Taranto’s port. Hackert brothers worked in Italy for a long time, and at this etching time, around 1789 (it’s the painting year), they were painter and engraver of the Ferdinand’s Court, in Caserta (where the painting is still in the collection). Many Italian ports were painted by Philipp in the late XVIII, when the king asked him to do a recognition (and a series of paintings) of southern Italy coast. Very good conditions, much rare.
