In this Portuguse language reproduction of illustrated historical documents from 1557 Hans Staden 1525 - 1576 a Europen explorer and soldier describes his experiences as a prisoner living among cannibals of Brazil. Issued unbound in 10 gigantic folded leaves with horrifying engravings of cannibalism. The pages are all housed inside a paper stiff white illustrated paper folder which is housed inside of a large stiff paper slipcase with olive green spine panel titled in white and black and white illustrated side panels. The pages are clean and bright. Minor browning to spine panel and edges of folder along with a few scuff marks to front panel. Wear rubbing chipping and short tears to edges of slipcase. Johannes Carolus Craen or his son-in-law Hendrik Leys Early 19th-century gold-tooled red sheepskin with a general title in Dutch lettered in gold on the spine gold-tooled board edges marbled endpapers gilt edges. 351 devotional engravings including 8 repeats printed on wove paper engraved by several 17th-century engravers printed from the original copper plates at the end of the 18th- or beginning of the 19th century. 351 ll. Intriguing and extensive collection of 351 devotional prints comprising ca. 16 print series and several separate engraved title pages of print series and some separate devotional prints. Each print shows a small engraving depicting a religious theme for almost every occasion and especially for the important days of the liturgical year. These prints were engraved and published in Antwerp which is considered to be the centre of production and publishing of devotional prints in the 17th- and 18th centuries. The majority of these praying cards were originally published by Franciscus Huberti or Frans Huybrechts 1630-1687 who seems to have been the first engraver and publisher to produce these types of works in Antwerp. He was mostly known for publishing so-called "gerijmde gebedsprentjes" rhymed devotional prints/prayer cards. After his death his plates were sold and used by others to republish the prints for example by Michiel Bunel 1670-1739 and later by Carolus Craen 1733-1799. Craen's plates were next used by Hendrik Leys d. 1853 not to be confused with the Antwerp painter Henri Leys. In 1805 Leys had married Craen's daughter and took over the publishing and printing business of his mother-in-law immediately after. He mostly continued publishing prints using older copperplates that were already part of the business since his father-in-law ran it and was one of the last printer-publishers to use copperplates in a time when lithography became more and more popular. At the end of his life Leys owned approximately 12000 usable copperplates made or sold by a whole host of 17th- and 18th-century engravers and/or publishers of devotional prints such as the Wierix-Barbé family Huberti Galle Van der Sande Bunel and the Van Merlen family. Cornelis van Merlen 1654-1723 was a publisher and engraver active in Antwerp. The Van Merlen family were important engravers and publishers of devotional engravings in Antwerp during the 17th- and 18th centuries. In 1687 he married Sara Maria Huybrechts who was the daughter of publisher and engraver Gaspar Huberti and Sara Voet and niece of the Antwerp engraver Franciscus Huberti 1630-1687 whose engravings make up the majority of the present work. The majority of the present work is most likely made up of Craen's or Leys' prints of the plates by Huberti Jacobus de Man Anton Wierix the Van Merlen family of engravers and others.A complete list of contents is available upon request.With a manuscript owner's inscription on the verso of the first flyleaf "Mimi Josephine Cogels 1822" a manuscript inscription on the recto of the second flyleaf "le 1er Avril 1822 1831" and some faint pencil annotations on the verso of the second to last flyleaf and the recto of the final flyleaf. The binding shows some slight rubbing the front joint is slightly weakened without any loss lacking the fore edge margin of the engraving of S. Gregorius no. 351 not affecting the engraving possibly lacking the 352nd engraving only a stub of paper remains possibly lacking the engraving of S. Ioannes Neponucenus by C. van Merlen a few leaves show minor marginal tears not affecting the engravings and with a brown stain on the final two flyleaves. Large album with 16th-century maps and engravings of Italy.
Italy 1550. 17th-century gold-tooled brown calf sewn on 6 supports with the corresponding raised bands on the spine a red morocco title label on the spine with the title "Novissima urbis Romae descriptio" lettered in gold gold-tooled board edges. Large oblong folio ca. 59 x 42.3 cm. With 76 full-page engravings and 12 full-page etchings. Remarkable album with 77 beautiful examples of 16th-century Italian cartography all in very fine dark impressions. The collection includes plans of important Italian towns such as Rome Venice Genoa Naples Milan Florence Palermo Siena Bologna and Pisa as well as detailed views of individual buildings and monuments in Rome. They are engraved by several cartographers from the school of Antonio Lafreri 1512-1577 primarily Claudio Duchetti d. 1585 Matteo Florimi d. 1613 and Lafreri himself. Florimi's works are among the rarest of the Lafreri school map makers especially his Siena imprints of which several have here been included.In the middle of the 16th century Italy was the centre of map production and distribution in Europe. This industry primarily took place in Venice and Rome. The most notable of the publishers in Rome was Lafreri. His most important and most popular work is the Speculum Romanae magnificentiae a collection of plans an views of Rome's monuments; no two copies of the Speculum are the same. The present collection contains more than thirty plates from the Speculum. When Lafreri died his nephew Claudio Duchetti inherited the company. He continued to produce the Speculum plates but often made small adjustments and signed his own name at the bottom. Most of the Speculum plates in the present album are by Duchetti. After his death the copperplates were sold to other publishers such as Giovanni Orlandi before 1590-after 1640 who reissued them. The majority of the plates in the present album were printed by Orlandi in 1602.The album further contains 32 engraved city plans mostly of Italian towns although a few foreign cities are also included; one of the rarest is the view of Moscow which is also included here. The collection ends with a incomplete series of 11 etchings of landscapes and biblical scenes.A list of contents is available upon request.With the bookplate of Louis Routy de Charodon seigneur de Grésigny and Charodon 1710-1794 on the front pastedown and remnants of another bookplate above. The boards are somewhat scratched and stained the spine shows traces of use the edges of the boards have been professionally restored and the boards have been lengthened to fit the maps. The maps are slightly browned some are slightly foxed the first few maps have been mounted onto 17th-century leaves the longer maps are somewhat soiled on the fore edge three maps are restored at the fore edge and one at the bottom edge some maps have been cut slightly short. Collection of 37 devotional prints and drawings.
Flanders and Paris: various publishers 1630. Several prints are tipped into a 19th-century elaborately gold- and blind-tooled brown morocco album a blind-tooled ornament in the centre of both boards with the crowned initials J.B. on the front surrounded by a double fillet frame with elaborate corner pieces gold-tooled board edges and turn-ins gilt edges white watered silk endpapers. The work is housed in a 19th-century marbled slipcase with a paper label with the name of Countess Julie Visart de Bocarmé mounted on the front. The remaining prints have been tipped onto a sheet of sturdy paper inserted into a clear plastic file folder which are loosely inserted into a 19th-century elaborately gold- and blind-tooled purple morocco album with the word "album" lettered in gold on the front surrounded by a blind-tooled Gothic style border and an elaborate gold-tooled border gilt edges black watered silk end papers. Oblong folio ca. 29 x 42.5 cm; sheet size ca. 12 x 9 to 35 x 23 cm. With 24 contemporary hand-coloured engravings of which some heightened with gold 1 contemporary hand-coloured woodcut illustration 1 chromolithographed print 7 watercolour drawings including 2 on vellum 3 silk embroidered prints in various sizes and 1 image made of paper ornaments glued onto a black netting fabric. Further with a folded alphabetical list of the Antwerp printers and engravers of devotional prints in a 19th-century hand tipped onto the first leaf of the album. 2 volumes. Remarkable collection of 37 devotional prints and drawings including fifteen printed on vellum and two "clad" prints. The majority of the prints and drawings were made in the 17th and 18th centuries but a small number of 19th-century examples is also included. The prints all depicting Catholic saints and scenery are decorated with a wide variety of techniques. Most are hand coloured and heightened with gold but several are clad in fabric embroidered cut out to resemble lace sometimes backed with coloured paper or metal foil to highlight the cut outs and one was made by gluing paper ornaments onto a black netting fabric. The present collection which was owned and probably compiled by the Belgian Countess Julie Alexandrine Marie Josèphe Visart de Bocarmé 1823-1862 not only offers a fascinating sample of popular printing culture in Flanders but also highlights the endless creativity of both the creators and consumers of these prints.Devotional prints were initially used as images for the illiterate replacing written or printed texts. They were intended for private devotion and often bought and decorated by women. The present prints were mainly engraved by 17th-century Flemish printmakers such as Cornelius de Boudt 1660-1738 Michiel Cabbaey 1660-1722 Guillaume Collaert ca. 1595-ca. 1651 Lodewijk Joseph Fruytiers 1713-1782 Jacob de Man ca. 1643-1719 and Theodoor van Merlen III 1661-1749. In contrast to most examples of this genre most of the present engravings are printed on vellum and beautifully coloured by a contemporary hand partly heightened in gold for the halos of the saints. The prints include biblical scenes showing Christ on the Cross Joseph Mary the Apostles and John the Baptist. The majority of the prints depict portraits of Catholic saints such as Anthony of Padua 1195-1231 Apollonia of Alexandria d. 249 Dorothea of Caesarea d. ca. 311 Francis of Assisi ca. 1181-1226 Francis Xavier 1506-1552 Helena of Constantinople ca. 246-330 Peter of Alcántara 1499-1562 and Rosalia of Palermo 1130-1166. Further with the printed label of Cabasson Successeur de Terzuolo-Despilly Papetier du Roi Rue de la Chaussée dAntin No. 15 mounted on the verso of the first flyleaf of the brown album all prints and drawings have been tipped onto a white sheet of paper with a manuscript collection number at the top. The boards are slightly rubbed and scratched. The first few leaves of the purple album have been removed to make space for the collection. The prints and drawing show traces of use with some browning and occasional creasing soiling or foxing. The edges and corners of the slipcase are scuffed and the lower right corner of the paper label is torn off. Together with seven sheets of proof plates and a folder of five related press clippings bearing the printed label of Monica McCall Inc. Wrappers lightly toned portfolio worn and splitting slipcase considerably worn and stained and lacking spine panel plates themselves are very good throughout with only a hint of age-toning to the outer margins.<br /> <br /> § Copy V signed by Von Ripper and Muriel Rukeyser one of three Rives paper with a suite of etchings on Velin de Normandie from a total edition of 67 copies. This copy belonged to Muriel Rukeyser who has extracted some of the suite of prints they now number 22 and added seven proof sheets some showing and annotating alternate inking options as well as a small collection of related press clippings gathered for her by Monica McCall her literary representative and sometime lover.<br /> <br /> An important collaboration between Rukeyser and the Austrian-born surrealist etcher Rudolph von Ripper 1905-1960 on the eve of America's entry into the Second World War. Rukeyser's poem looks to the legacy of John Brown the militant abolitionist of the 1850s and celebrates the possibility of spiritual renewal through resistance to injustice. It first appeared in the June 1940 edition of Poetry Magazine. Here the poem is fully engraved and illustrated with original etchings by von Ripper and interleaved with the etched verses of the old Civil War marching song. By the time Von Ripper was engaged on this project he was only 35 but had already fought for the French Foreign Legion been imprisoned and tortured by the Gestapo and been wounded while fighting on the Republican side in the Spanish Civil War. His direct physical experience of the rise of fascism is evident in his visceral Goya-like etchings. The series was exhibited in the Bignou Gallery in New York in 1941. A contemporary review described it is "an unusal undertaking brilliantly executed the drawings forming not so much illustrations or decorations as actual parts of the poem. Realism symbolism powerful design and dramatic presentment mark these plates which form a distinguished piece of bookmaking. unknown

Dr. Christopher Wordsworth Master Of Trinity And A Nephew Of The Poet William Wordsworth. He Was The Younger Brother Of The Classical Scholar John Wordsworth And Charles Wordsworth Bishop Of Saint Andrews Dunkeld And Dunblane. He Was Educated At Winchester And Trinity Cambridge. Like His Brother Charles He Was Distinguished As An Athlete As Well As For Scholarship. He Won The Chancellor's Gold Medal For Poetry In 1827 And 1828. He Became Senior Classic And Was Elected A Fellow And Tutor Of Trinity In 1830; Shortly Afterwards He Took Holy Orders. He Went For A Tour In Greece In 1832-1833 And Published Various Works On Its Topography And Archaeology The Most Famous Of Which Is "Wordsworth's" Greece 1839. In 1836 He Became Public Orator At Cambridge And In The Same Year Was Appointed Headmaster Of Harrow A Post He Resigned In 1844. In 1844 Sir Robert Peel Appointed Him As A Canon Of Westminster 1844-1869. He Was Vicar Of Stanford In The Vale Berkshire 1850-1869 And Archdeacon Of Westminster 1864-1869. 1889. Very Good. 2 albumen prints. The first Rouen -- Fontaine de la Grosse Horloge is 255 x 199 mm. on a cardboard mount 297 x 239 mm. Caption printed in photograph in lower right: "54. Rouen_Fontaine de la Grosse horloge." Written in ink at lower edge of image: "Rouen August 25/89." Written in pencil next to photograph on mount: "Printed by the house of T. Herlyison." The fountain was designed by Jean-Pierre Defrance and built next to the famous Gros Horloge in 1743; the bas relief depicts the mythological scene of the river Alpheus and the nymph Arethusa and Cupid flying above them. This photograph includes a man waiting for a bucket to fill at the fountain and a woman carrying a bucket and moving off to the right. The window to the right of the fountain says "Debit de la Fontaine." The second photograph 209 x 270 mm on the other side of the card mount is an albumen print identified along the lower mount edge as only "Rouen." It shows the Fontaine Sainte-Marie built in 1879 with the original lights on either side. The author Zacharias Topelius 1818-1898 through his work as a writer journalist and professor of history played a pivotal role in the creation of the Finnish identity in the 19th century. En Resa i Finland Travel in Finland employs illustrations by the most famous Finnish artists of the time. The beautiful steel-engraved plates are based on original paintings by Berndt Lindholm A. v. Becker B. Reinhold Hjalmar Munsterhjelm Karl Emanuel Jansson Robert Wilhelm Ekman J. Knutson W. Holmberg Oslar Kleineh and Albert Edelfelt. Originally issued in parts in 1872 and 1873 this copy was apparently taken to the binder without the title page and 8 preliminary pages. The text is in Swedish. The plates were engraved by A. Weger and are captioned in Finnish Swedish and French. This is the first edition not the modern reprint. In Very Good Condition: corners rubbed; cover slightly soiled; spine faded; corners of a few leaves faintly dampstained not impacting image or text; light foxing on a few plates; otherwise clean and bright. Lewis; 29 cm. Contemporary half red morocco with marbled paper over boards. Six spine compartments between gilt-rules and raised bands with gilt-tooled decoration. Black morocco spine label in second compartment with gilt-tooled title "Lewis's Etchings. Red morocco label on front board with double gilt-ruled border gilt corner rosettes and title "Etchings of the Physiognomy Manners & Character of the People of France & Germany." All page edges marbled to match boards and endpapers. Remains of a small circular label on front fixed endpaper reading "Abbey" along lower edge. The plates were issued for insertion in T.F. Dibdin's Bibliographical Antiquarian and Picturesque Tour in France and Germany 1821. Included are directions for placing the plates in Dibdin's work. Lewis made hundreds of drawings while accompanying Thomas Frognall Dibdin on his tour of France and Germany some of which were used to illustrate Dibdin's book. A disagreement about how much Dibdin owed Lewis for the drawings developed after the tour and the additional plates presented here were undoubtedly published by Lewis to generate some extra income from his work. In Very Good Condition: leather and boards are rubbed most heavily at head of spine and corners; corner of title page lightly soiled; light foxing primarily affecting the leaves on which the plates are mounted rather than the plates themselves; plates are clean and crisp. This is number 198 of a limited edition of 800 copies. Set in monotype Walbaum at the Out of Sorts letter foundery in Mamaroneck N.Y. and printed on mould-made Magnani paper at the Shagbark Press in South Portland Me. The lithographs were printed on hand-made Japanese paper at Trestle Editions N.Y. City. The book design was by Benjamin Shiff. Hand-sewn and hand-bound by Carol Joyce. Strange Attractor Press London 2018 This is a truly odd listing. It is easy to understand at one level. It has a powerful impact. It will set you thinking. It is also a truly original take on an historical theme. Ian Johnstone worked on this odd and fascinating collection. It is VERY odd; it is possibly unique. The wounds all twenty three of them were inspired by this artist's conception of how each stab was wielded and delivered upon Julius Caesar. An attempt to describe it sounds pretentious but with this strange book in your hands you can look and share something of this odd vision. Each was produced on - I believe - white melamine. The wounds are rendered in red pigment or ink. One of them is featured on the shiny white cover. It is an image inset into a blind stamped shape. The images inside are all in keeping with the cover and one can speculate; is this Brutus's mark And can that be yon Cassius's lean and hungry blade Was this how each wound appeared upon the toga of JC Speculate as you wish and contemplate them in whatever order you like. They are all worth a look and you will have seen nothing so strange before. And there are some photographs of the artist at the back by Kerry and Daniel O'Sullivan. Geoff Cox and Serena Korda have written the text. This is hard to describe and easy to look at. It is wondrous strange. It is peculiar.On the back cover it says '23 hawk beaks 23 fragments of a skull 23 curses hung round the neck of a scavenger.' And there are only 300 copies in the whole wide world of this book and it might be a masterpiece. It is not signed or numbered but the publisher insists only 300 copies exist. There is also a cassette of special music. YES! A cassette. The loose prints are ready to frame and the whole package is something very special indeed. Limited Edition. Hardcover. New.
