1927réf. 044798Richmond Virginia: The William Byrd Press Inc. Printers 1927. First Edition First Printing . Hardcover. Good/No Jacket. Octavos. 623; 644 pages. Indexed at the rear of Volume II. Two volumes bound in original blue cloth with spine titles in gilt. Moderate wear to the bindings. The bindings have some chips or abrasions in the cloth which seem to have been touched up with blue paint or coloring. This is more evident at the top edge of front cover on Volume II as well as on the side of its spine. Endpapers foxed. Text is toned but generally clean. INSCRIBED by the author on the front flyleaf of Volume I "To S. A. Ashe / with the author's esteem / Landon C. Bell / May 20 1929." Samuel A'Court Ashe 1840-1938 was a lawyer and a Confederate Captain in the Civil War. After the War he served in the North Carolina legislature and was a noted historian author and defender of the Confederacy. There is also a signed typed letter laid in loosely from Drewry McKee Smith to Captain Sam Ashe dated 1929. This is actually a copy of a letter to someone else that the sender signed and sent to Captain Ashe. Includes the original stamped envelope which is on browned paper. Unfortunately someone has stuck this in a folded and taped mylar sleeve and the envelop is stuck to the tape inside the sleeve. The books are NOT signed by Samuel A. Ashe. 1968réf. 75105Paris 1968. Fine. Paris Mardi 27 février 1968 13.50 x 20.90 cm une page sur un feuillet Autograph letter signed by Roger Caillois addressed to Dominique Aury; one page on a leaf written in blue ballpoint pen. Interesting letter concerning the article ""Mémoire interlope"" which would appear in issue 185 of the sixteenth year May 1968 of the Nouvelle Revue Française. At this time Marcel Arland and Jean Paulhan were both directors of the review which they had revived from its ashes in 1953. Roger Caillois's correspondent Dominique Aury also known under the pseudonym Pauline Réage sat on the Reading Committee of the famous Revue. ""Regarding the note as I had told Arland I'm giving up publishing it. Our friend would surely take it as a sort of stab in the back a betrayal all the more deliberate since I practically never write notes. It's not worth it."" We could find no trace of this enigmatic note which Roger Caillois is impatient to recover: ""Retournez-la moi voulez-vous. J'en ferai peut-être le noyau d'une étude plus étendue où j'essaierai qu'apparaissent moins irritants que dans ce condensé les rapprochements litigieux."" ""Return it to me would you. I might perhaps make it the core of a more extended study where I will try to make the contentious connections appear less irritating than in this condensed version."" unknown

Thomas and his two daughters Penelope and Sappho. Among the olive trees and under the Mediterranean sun he met in the mid-1960s the young and vivacious ""Jany"" Janine Brun a woman from Montpellier in her thirties with devastating beauty who worked in the Antiquities department of the Sorbonne in Paris. She was nicknamed ""Buttons"" in memory of their first meeting where the young woman wore a dress covered with buttons. Henry Miller also fell under the charm of ""Buttons"" praising her beauty and eternal youth in exceptional unpublished letters. réf. 46400No date or place but likely the LBJ Ranch Stonewall Texas ca. 1968. Original color photographic print 10.75" x 7.5" on 14" x 11" card mount; in gallery mat. Inscribed on mount beneath photo: "For Deke De Loach / with appreciation for his dedicated service" signed in Johnson's hand undated. Mild surface abrasions to image; mild soil to mount; photographer's serial stamp to verso of mount "5 JY 68 D897-35." Photographer unidentified but based on location and outfit likely taken during a 1968 photo session at the LBJ Ranch by Frank Wolfe LBJ's official White House photographer. An attractive large-format professional portrait of LBJ in casual dress kneeling in a pasture with his trademark Stetson resting on his knee. An excellent association; Cartha "Deke" De Loach was Deputy Associate Director of the FBI during the Hoover era and a close associate of LBJ's; in 1963 immediately after the assassination of John F. Kennedy Johnson had De Loach assigned to permanent duty at the White House. As described by New York Times reporter Tim Weiner "De Loach was always at L.B.J.'s beck and call night and day he was a talented political hatchet man a trusted deputy to Hoover. He was also crucial to intelligence investigations conducted during the Johnson presidency." Based on the tenor of the inscription we surmise that the portrait was presented to De Loach at the end of Johnson's presidency in 1968. unknown

Mailing folds; slightly toned at margins; Very Good. Regarding the recipient's letter to the Reader's Digest of September 24 Eastman had been hired as an editor for the conservative publication earlier in the same year. The subject appears to be the institution of the death penalty in the Soviet Union: ".Nobody questions the fact that the death penalty was decreed for theft of 'socialist property' and the extension of all penalties to children twelve years old automatically extends that one. I am sorry to say I can not tell you offhand when the previous decree was issued but I think it was the Spring of 1934. unknown

I hope the autobiography may live up to your expectations." The recipient is likely the American proletarian novelist and essayist Josephine Herbst 1892-1969; the "sad news" to which Eastman refers may well have been Herbst's ongoing battles with her former husband and fellow novelist John Herrmann. unknown
