From a 2007 review by Jay Flemma: "Welcome to the biggest heaviest and most comprehensive golf book youll ever see in your life. C & F is bigger than a breadbox more powerful than a locomotive and able to leap all seven Harry Potter novels in a single bound volume. Its not just a golf book but an encyclopaedia: the only place to go when you need any information on golf in the Pacific Northwest.Indeed the name is appropriate both for Jeff and the work.ÃÂ Its called Championships and Friendships for two reasons. First it pays homage to the camaraderie the game inspires focusing on the warm personalities that brought the game to the masses in the Pacific Northwest. Second it highlights the rich history of competitive golf in the region. Despite being larger than many a dictionary it reads easily indeed cheerfully bringing to life its subjects with a sincere vibrancy. The book is not meant to be read cover to cover but as a reference work. Organized into short vignettes C & F covers the rise of the games popularity in the region from 1895 describes the formation of the Pacific Northwest Golf Association and tells the stories of important tournaments and players. From the dust jacket: "A uniquely compelling work that transcends traditional autobiography A Feel for the Game is an anecdotal and personal portrait of a man and a game that were made for each other. With two Masters Championships nineteen career PGA victories three NCAA championships and millions in earnings Ben Crenshaw is without question one of the most successful golfers of the century. But Crenshaw's relationship to his sport goes beyond his individual performances. As captain of the 1999 Ryder Cup team confronting the largest deficit in tournament history Crenshaw believed in his players and was confident enough in his study of golf history to trust his feel for the game. In a hard-fought competition that kept viewers glued to their televisions he brilliantly marshaled a team of diverse personalities and brought the Ryder Cup back to American soil. And he did it his way with grace honor dedication and an encyclopedic knowledge of how the game should be played. A Feel for the Game is Crenshaw's warm and heartfelt ode to the traditions and spirit of golf through the prism of his own life. He describes his early years learning the game from the legend Harvey Penick and takes readers through his career as an outstanding amateur to his glorious years on the PGA Tour. Who can forget Ben's tribute to Harvey throughout his inspirational 1995 Masters championship run Crenshaw sees his success as an extension of his interest in the game's greatest players and teachers Bobby Jones Ben Hogan Byron Nelson Jackie Burke Arnold Palmer Jack Nicklaus Tom Kite Payne Stewart and Tiger Woods. Every person that crosses Ben's path and every golf course that he has had the pleasure to play or design inspires him. Crenshaw's reminiscences his fascinating glimpses into golf history and his unparalleled understanding of the nuances of play make this a must-have book for every serious fan of the world's most popular pastime.". Best.-Nr. 59227N.p.; photographer unknown ca 1990. Three large-format black-and-white photographic prints 11" x 14"; very mild creasing at edges still Near Fine. Three anonymous but excellent images of a Gulf War-era demonstration probably in Manhattan ca. 1990. The photographer is unidentified but the prints are of professional quality and capture close-up scenes of crowds carrying banners and placards opposing military involvement in the Middle East and directly attacking President George H.W. Bush. One placard calls for Bush's impeachment accusing him of ".creating the Gulf War to Cover Up His High Crimes and Misdemeanors;" another appears to read "Liar Liar We Will Set Your Ass on Fire." Several images suggest a New York likely Manhattan locale: one poster connects the marcher to SUNY Old Westbury on Long Island; several placards bear the imprint of the National Coalition to Stop U.S. Intervention in the Middle East including a New York City phone number. Though the precise date is obviously uncertain the event captured here is plausibly the October 20 1990 nationwide protest against Operation Desert Storm; rallies took place in several cities simultaneously but New York's was by far the largest as some 15000 protesters gathered at Columbus Circle and marched to Times Square. In general opposition to the first Gulf War was rather muted but significant demostrations did take place in October 1990 and January 1991 as well as a less well-attended counter-protest on the day of the Desert Storm victory parade June 8th 1991. unknown
