1857réf. 851841857. An Interesting Artifact of Private Railway Policing Policing. Stockton & Darlington Railway Company. Police Report Concerning the Death of a Young Man. Durham May 20 1857. Single 5" x 8" 13 x 20.5 cm sheet part-printed and completed in manuscript in a single hand circular device of the Stockton and Darlington Railway Company at head docket to verso. Moderate toning horizontal and vertical fold lines negligible light soiling small tear to upper right corner. Very good. $250. The Stockton & Darlington Railway's police force was established around 1825 pre-dating the creation of the Metropolitan Police in 1829 and becoming the first railway police force. Like others of its kind it operated on a quasi-public basis and came to share jurisdiction with the public police in the area; quasi-public police forces were often criticized for concealing accidents to protect the company rather than the public. They were later integrated into the British Transport Police. This report was made by Robert Brown an officer of the Stockton & Darlington Railway. It concerns the death of John James "Lithograph Boy at Holsingham" who was attempting to gather lime from a wagon on the railway. When the engineer unexpectedly moved the train backwards James was crushed beneath it. He died from his injuries two days later. unknown books
1853réf. BK0172Washington D.C. 1853. 24 pp. measuring 6 ½ x 10 inches. Stitched and untrimmed. Good with considerable wear and chipping at the edges some soiling and early pencil notations. Thomas Hart Benton's argument for a central transcontinental route issued as Congress was moving toward the government surveys that would dominate the Pacific railroad question during the next several years. Benton had been promoting a government-backed "central national highway" since 1849 running west from Missouri toward California. Writing to his former Missouri constituents on March 4 1853 Benton argues that the accumulated western explorations had already demonstrated the practicality of a central route. He gives particular attention to the country approaching the Rocky Mountains and to the search for a usable pass near the headwaters of the Arkansas and Rio Grande drawing heavily on the western travels of his son-in-law John C. Frémont. The final eight pages form an appendix bringing together evidence for the route. They include Frémont's 1850 letter to the Philadelphia Railroad Convention and more notably a statement made to Benton by the veteran trader and guide Antoine Leroux. Leroux recounts his early years in the West his association with the fur-trading expeditions of Ashley and Henry and his long residence at Taos. Graff describes this as the probable first printing of Leroux's statement. A useful piece of western railroad literature with substantial Frémont and New Mexico content published on the eve of the federal Pacific railroad surveys. The Panic of 1873 caused many disruptions including destroying "all market for railroad bonds for the time being. reflecting the various antagonistic influences then at work against the railroads of the country culminating during the spring and summer of 1873 in almost total destruction of the credit of the railroad securities." Jay Cooke & Co. suspended operations in September 1873 and its assets including Northern Pacific Railroad stocks and bonds were sold by order of the courts in December of that year. see: an article in the Philadelphia Inquirer July 23 1874 for a lengthy discussion of the company and its finances. 1869réf. 235661869. Indian railway archive spanning 1869 to 1946 documenting the construction financing administration and everyday operation of one of the largest transportation systems created under colonial rule. Railways transformed the movement of people commodities troops and information across the subcontinent linking port cities pilgrimage centers agricultural districts and frontier regions through a network that expanded from the first passenger line of 1853 into tens of thousands of miles of track by the twentieth century. The archive brings together engineering documentation corporate finance operating manuals photographic views and press photographs tracing the railway from its physical construction in 1869 to its role in the daily movement of millions of passengers during the final decades of British India. Archive of 20 pieces including 16 silver gelatin and black and white real photo postcard photographs three railway publications and one Bengal Provincial Railway Company share certificate India 1869 to 1946. The archive includes an 1895 ten-rupee share certificate issued by The Bengal Provincial Railway Company Limited; a 1946 East Indian Railway timetable; a 1945-1946 North Western Railway Karachi Division working timetable carrying staff regulations and train schedules; and an 1869 engineering publication containing a large foldout schematic titled "Jumna Bridge Delhi Railway" illustrating foundation wells and bridge construction methods. The photographs depict railway stations crowded with passengers and pilgrims; vendors selling fruit through train windows; station platforms occupied by European and Indian travelers; native preachers distributing religious tracts in a railway station; heavily congested rail traffic; locomotives operating through forested sections of the Darjeeling Himalayan Railway; the Darjeeling Loop and Double Loop engineering works; and press photographs documenting derailments crowding and railway accidents. Several photographs bear typed news agency captions. The press photographs place the railway within crisis reporting including the 1945 Calcutta Hindu Muslim riot crowds on railway tracks the Hyderabad passenger train bridge collapse that killed more than 112 people and the Madras flood related train disaster reported as South India's worst rail disaster with nearly 150 killed. The material spans nearly the entire history of railway development in colonial India from nineteenth-century bridge engineering and railway finance through the mature network of the 1940s. The Bengal Provincial Railway certificate reflects the speculative capital that financed railway expansion while the Jumna Bridge plans document the engineering techniques required to carry rail lines across major river systems. The Darjeeling views record one of the most celebrated mountain railways of the colonial world built to overcome steep Himalayan terrain through loops reverses and narrow-gauge construction. The 1946 timetables and photographs of crowded stations pilgrims vendors and accident scenes show how railways had become indispensable to commercial exchange religious travel and mass mobility by the final years before Partition and independence. Light surface wear occasional creasing expected age toning and minor handling wear throughout; foldout engineering plate intact. Overall very good condition. A concentrated record of how railway finance engineering administration and passenger movement combined to create the transportation system that reshaped colonial India. unknown books
1974réf. 236031974. Historic railroad preservation photo archive depicting men rebuilding track by hand likely in Wisconsin circa 1974 to 1978 recording the labor behind an early heritage railroad or museum railroad operation. The photographs show a mixed volunteer crew repairing a rural line with bars jacks hand tools pneumatic tools and improvised supplies rather than large production machinery. The group belongs to the 1970s expansion of railroad preservation when museums and local groups saved equipment and short stretches of track left behind by the contraction of American branch line service. Photo archive of 37 sequentially numbered silver gelatin photographs likely drawn from a larger project record approximately 8 x 10 inches likely Wisconsin circa 1974 to 1978. The photographs show men working along a wooded railroad right of way pulling spikes driving spikes lifting rail shoveling ballast checking alignment and using track jacks and long lining bars to shift rail into place. Several images show workers kneeling over ties standing astride rails handling buckets and tools and watching as others operate pneumatic equipment. Other views show a small rail yard with old freight cars cabooses work equipment a train or railcar numbered 31 and a station or depot building with a partially visible sign beginning "North." One photograph shows a worker using a "Pratt & Lambert Vapex" bucket apparently repurposed for grease compound bolts or other maintenance material. The images also include informal portraits of the crew older men and younger men working together a few posed groupings and a final handshake giving the archive the character of a project record rather than a railroad publicity file. By the 1970s many railroad preservation groups had moved beyond saving locomotives and passenger cars into the harder work of maintaining actual track. Abandoned or lightly used branch lines required tie replacement rail alignment ballast work and mechanical repair before historic trains could operate for the public. These photographs document that work at ground level: men on their knees at the rail hand tools in use old rolling stock nearby and a rural station setting that points toward a small preservation railroad rather than a commercial mainline crew. Light surface wear with occasional handling marks. Overall in very good condition. A concentrated visual record of hand track work volunteer maintenance and early historic railroad preservation likely in Wisconsin during the 1970s. unknown books
