4to. 188 pp. Illustrated with 52 colour plates and 2 black and white plates depicting birds of prey, a plate with 4 photographs of nests, and 2 lithographed illustrations in the text of ancient Egyptian statues of falcons. Rebound in blue half morocco with title label. The very rare only published volume of "Die Vögel am Nil" by Alexander Koenig (1858-1940): a monograph on the birds of prey of the entire Nile region, with many beautiful plates. Koenig traveled to the Nile six times to study the local fauna and concentrated his findings in this second volume, completed near the end of his life. Koenig was a scholar and a man of wealth as well an an avid collector. In 1912 he founded the renowned Museum Koenig in Bonn. In 1964 the 'first' volume was published posthumously in Bonn by the Alexander Koenig Stiftung under the title "Alexander Koenigs Reisen am Nil". Koenig had first published his studies on Egyptian birds of prey in the "Journal für Ornithologie" over the course of many years (1907-32) under the title "Avifauna Aegyptiaca", with some plates. All of these contributions were assembled and expanded, with new plates added, in "Die Vögel am Nil". (The plates already published in the journals are marked "Avif. Aeg."). The birds are divided into three types: vultures, falcons, and owls. The chromolithographed plates of vultures are done by F. Naubaur after E. de Maes (the eggs only by De Maes). Most falcon plates are signed "FR" (A. Frisch) in the plate and executed by Otto Kleinschmidt, printed at the Kunstanstalt Köhler at Gera (Germany), others are by F. Neubaur and E. de Maes. Another plate of eggs (XLIX) is by Paul Preiss. Most of the owls are done by F. Neubaur, with the exception of plate LIV, which is signed "JCK" (Keulmans). The ornithological artist Otto Kleinschmidt was also a collector of bird specimens. His collections of over 10,000 specimens was sold to the Museum Koenig in 1935. - In fine condition. Anker 266. Nissen IVB 524.

4to. 36 pp. Wrapperless pamphlet, disbound from a larger volume with near-contemporary handwritten foliation 21-38. Rare Lisbon edition of the epic poem about the 1732 capture of Oran by the Spanish army, written by the soldier and poet Eugenio Gerardo Lobo Huerta (1679-1750), first published in Spain in 1732. After having held the city since 1509 but losing it to Moorish forces in 1708, the Spanish recaptured it from the Deylik of Algiers in 1732 and managed to control the town for the next six decades. Lobo, who himself participated in the battle and was severely wounded, dedicated this work in 170 numbered octavas to his comrades; his practice of poetry earned him the nickname "Capitán Coplero" ("captain of couplets"). - Only 8 copies traced in libraries internationally. Aguilar Piñal V, 967. BGUC Misc., 78. OCLC 858632525.
4to. XVI, 144 pp. With 7 numbered plates (4 of which coloured) and several black and white illustrations in the text. Original full cloth with stamped falcon to front cover and stamped spine-title. First edition. - A standard work of modern falconry literature by one of the most renowned falconers of the 20th century, the British lawyer Mavrogordato (1905-87). This "excellent book" (Gallagher) is directed at a new generation of falconers choosing to work with the previously frowned-upon sparrowhawks instead of falcons, but also addresses experienced hawkers. It includes observations on the choice of a suitable bird, the treatment of eyasses, the falconer's equipment, and the calling-off of a bird, as well as the animals' diet and health. - The charming illustrations were carried out by the British artist George Edward Lodge (1860-1954), himself an authority on falconry. The plates show muskets and goshawks sitting or in flight; the text illustrations mainly display tools used by the falconer, including hoods, knots, and perches. - Title-page slightly foxed, otherwise in excellent condition. Gallagher, Falcon Fever 85. Oelgart 29B. OCLC 6399849.

Engraved map, outline coloured. 730 x 260 mm. The work was originally included in Karl Müller's "Geographi Graeci minores", along with many other maps of the region. - The map is highly detailed, showing many settlements, mountains, wadis, and more. Most interestingly, Müller provides Ptolemaic coordinates for some of these features, and the map credits Agatharchides, Arthemidorus, Pliny, and Ptolemy as its sources. Place names given range from Arabic to Greek. Seven inset maps are provided, including one showing the full Red Sea. The map also includes a view of the "Pic de Bab-El-Mandeb" (the "gate of tears"), a mountain which lies above the straits at the entrance to the Red Sea.

Folio (ca. 305 x 393 mm). 1 page. Share certificate for a bearer stock security of 500 francs with 24 coupons, signed by two administrators of the "Société des factoreries francaises du Golfe Persique". The company operated from the small port town of Obock, on the Gulf of Tadjoura opposite Aden. It was the site of the first French colony in the region, which was established in 1862, initiating the colonisation of Djibouti. The French were especially interested in having a coaling station for steamships, which proved valuable upon the opening of the Suez Canal in 1869.
Two and a half handwritten sides on 2 leaves. Signed "your most obedient humble servant Dr. Sprenger", and concerning various Arabic manuscripts which Sprenger is considering translating. The letter dates from Sprenger's relatively brief time in London (1836-43), and thus predates any of his published works. He decides that Ibn Kourdadbeh's 'Oriental Geography' (the earliest surviving Arabic book on administrative geography) is unsuitable as he can only locate one MS copy. Instead, he offers to produce a translation of Suyuti's famous 'History of the Caliphs', which he notes has been accounted the best of such histories by the Arab encylopaedist Haji Khalfa. Sprenger transcribes several names from English into Arabic for the benefit of his correspondent. - A well-preserved and early letter reflecting Sprenger's outstanding command of Arabic sources. The Austrian-born Sprenger became one of the most noted orientalists of the 19th century, producing a comprehensive 'Life of Mohammad from Original Sources' in 1851.

A year ago, shortly before i arrived here, they swarmed into this area as uninvited and unwelcome visitors and didn't leave until they had eaten or destroyed practically every piece of green vegetation. They certainly can pick out the color green with their acute vision and i barely reached home to hide my dollar bills from their search-for-green! [...]" (3 May 1953). - About Ramadan: "Three days ago the arab month of Ramadhan began [...] It's quite a hardship on the arabs who work daytime shift since they aren't heavyweights to begin with and after a few hours without nourishment they are in no shape for work-exertion. The company should abolish all daytime work during this month but of course it is all a big question of $$$$$$'s and the oil has to be kept moving regardless of any attempts, man-made or god-made, to interrupt the flow. Soooooo the old routine keeps spinning at a slower pace but in the same system [...]" (16 May 1953). - Enjoying living alone: "The young man who was rooming with me left for home yesterday after finishing his two-year contract. Not many new employees have been hired in recent months so that means that i'll be enjoying complete ownership of the room for some time to come. How lucky can i get? All this and a salary too! Ah yes, this is real living although I still can't understand why it should happen to a bum like me!
