1747réf. 143611747. Bellin Jacques Nicolas. Ile d'Ormus ou de Jerun 1747 depicts Hormuz and the surrounding Persian Gulf maritime landscape more than a century after an Anglo-Persian force ended Portuguese control of the island in 1622. Published in Histoire générale des voyages the engraving identifies the Persian coast islands anchorages fortifications and channels while distinguishing Arab vessels from large-masted European sailing ships. Its concentration on ships coastal defenses and approaches to Hormuz records the strategic geography of a passage that connected Persian Gulf ports with Indian Ocean trading routes. Bellin Jacques Nicolas. Ile d'Ormus ou de Jerun. From Histoire générale des voyages 1747. Overall sheet size 13.5 x 9.5 inches; image size 7.5 x 9.75 inches. The upper portion identifies the "Cote de Perse" while inscriptions throughout the engraving include "Fortresse" "Ile de Kishom ou Quixema" "Entre des Vaisseaux" "Porte de derriere" "Parade Alkoran" "St. Lucia" and "Lardimira." Five Arab vessels occupy the foreground while additional Arab shipping appears at left and European ships with tall masts and multiple sails appear at right. The fortified settlement on Hormuz includes the fortress associated with Portuguese occupation of the island. Hormuz had been seized in 1507 by the Portuguese commander Afonso de Albuquerque and Portuguese control made the island a fortified base for regulating maritime commerce at the entrance to the Persian Gulf. The Portuguese constructed the Fort of Our Lady of the Conception there; in 1622 forces of Shah Abbas I assisted by ships of the English East India Company captured Hormuz and ended Portuguese rule on the island. Bellin's 1747 engraving therefore records a landscape shaped by earlier Portuguese fortification but returned to Persian control while its juxtaposition of Arab and European vessels documents the continuing international maritime character of the strait. Paper folded three times consistent with its original publication format. Overall very good condition. unknown

Binding dusted text and plates clean. Very Good. President William Joyce informs "The Tremont & Gulf Railway Company is the outgrowth of the Tremont & Gulf Railroad which in its initial stages was merely a logging road with rather poor grades and alignment." He proudly recounts the Company's development. "The storied Tremont & Gulf Railway began life in 1902 when it laid rails from a Tremont Lumber Company railhead 9 miles from the town of Tremont to Winnfield Louisiana some 40 miles to the south. Various small expansions occurred up through 1908 when the original company the Tremont & Gulf Railroad went into foreclosure. The T&G Railway emerged as successor and promptly completed another branch of 20 miles. The shortline served a timber - rich region situated amid the mainlines of several prominent Louisiana carriers: Chicago Rock Island & Pacific; Illinois Central; Louisiana & Arkansas; Missouri Pacific. Nevertheless despite these advantages the pike lost money throughout its existence" web site of Hawkins Rails online. The Railway's original records "which had been found to be more or less incomplete and scattered" are organized compiled and printed here. OCLC 817757631 1- SMU as of March 2025. unknown

G.O.L.F. stands for Geometrically Oriented Linear Force. From the Introduction: "It may be that an octopus -- or a "thing" from outer space -- would need a different procedure but for people -shaped golfers there is actually only "one swing" as depicted in Chapter 8 and discussed in Chapter 7. This Basic Stoke is not a basic procedure but is basic geometry. Almost anyone can do an imitation that could appear to the untrained eye to be as good looking as those of many experts. And all that would need to be added would be more precision in the Component relationships. And that this book can supply. In fact that is all it is intended to supply. Without that 'Basic Motion' it couldn't even do that. See 3-0. The relationships in the Golf Stroke can be explained scientifically only by geometry because geometry is the science of relationships. So learn Feel from Mechanics rather than Mechanics from Feel. 'Alignment Golf' -- Feel from Mechanics -- dispenses with all dependence on 'mandatory' Positions which can be perfectly executed and still miss the ball. They facilitate things but guarantee nothing -- unless you know the relations that are supposed to facilitate.". 1979 edition. Hardcover. Very Good condition/No jacket probably as issued.
