8vo. VIII, 298 pp., final blank leaf. Printed original wrappers. First edition. Inscribed and signed by the author to Madame Maratuech, from 1919 to 1925 the director of the girls' boarding school at Saint-Denis operated by the French League of Honour: "A madame Maratuech, Directrice des Etudes de la Maison d'éducation de La Légion d'Honneur de St. Denis. Hommage respectueux de l'auteur [...]". - Interesting assessment of the impact of the Anglo-Russian Convention of 1907, which regulated the spheres of influence over Afghanistan and Persia, with Britain controlling the entrance to the Gulf. It examines the growing influence of the British Empire in the Gulf region, particularly Bahrain, Kuwait and in Southern Arabia, before dealing with the geopolitics of Afghanistan, Tibet, and Persia, which was half under Russian and half under British influence. The work concludes with an analysis of the impact of the pact on both Muscat and Kuwait. Never translated into English; a Russian translation appeared in 1924. - Without the separately published lithographed map. Binding loosened; old adhesive tape in the gutter between front cover and flyleaf as well as to pp. 192f.; occasional small marginal flaws. OCLC 851237785.

Originally conceived as a statistical examination of the ecumenical propagation of Christianity, in subsequent editions the work gradually expanded until it formed a comprehensive repertory of anthropology and geography, with systematic accounts of the physical properties, demographics, economic resources, military power, and political constitution of all states of the world. - Wants the first part, which would have formed a separate volume (536 pp.). 8vo. 37, (1) pp. Giltstamped purple cloth with white moirée endpapers. Extremely rare anonymous pamphlet by the political writer Georges Giacometti about the political position of Turkey during the crisis of December 1876, after the outbreak of the Serbian-Ottoman War that would soon develop into the Russo-Turkish War of 1877-78. OCLC lists a single copy in public collections (British Library, not identifying the author). - Extremeties a little rubbed. Removed from the library of Sultan Abdul Hamid II, with traces of requisite marks and the author's handwritten inscription to front flyleaf: "A Sa Majesté Impériale / Hommage Respectueux de l'auteur. G. Giacometti". - Abdul Hamid II (1842-1918) was the last Sultan of the Ottoman Empire to exert effective contol over the fracturing state and also remembered as a poet, translator and one of the dynasty's greatest bibliophiles. While his passion for books is memorialized by the many precious donations he gave to libraries all over the world and which mostly have remained intact to this day (including the 400-volume "Abdul-Hamid II Collection of Books and Serials" gifted to the Library of Congress), his own library was dispersed in the years following his deposition in 1909: books were removed to other palaces and even sold to Western collectors, the greatest part of his collection is today preserved in the Chester Beatty Library in Dublin. Folio (240 x 319 mm). 36 pp. of text and 20 mounted black-and-white photographs with paper guards. Contemporary half calf with giltstamped covers, spine, and spine-title. Marbled endpapers. Rare first edition of the first report on the Royal Cache, an ancient Egyptian tomb near Deir el-Bahri in the Theban Necropolis, officially discovered in 1881. Including 20 impressive photographs of sarcophagi and mummies, this account convinced authorities to expand the Boulaq archaeological Museum. - The cache at Deir el-Bahri was first discovered in 1871 by the Abd el-Rassul brothers, who ended up selling items from the tomb on the black market. Eventually the Director of the Boulaq Museum, Gaston Maspero, who had succeeded Auguste Mariette in 1881 as director general of excavations and antiquities for the Egyptian government, became suspicious and had two of the brothers arrested. One of them revealed a tomb secreted in a cliff near Deir al-Bahri. Upon arriving on-site, the delegation of the Museum discovered an extraordinary collection of mummified remains and funeral equipment of more than 50 kings, queens, and other members of the royalty (including the mummies of Thutmose I and Ramesses II), suggesting that the tomb was used for safekeeping royal mummies during the Twenty-first Dynasty. In only 48 hours the entire cache was cleared and all contents, including the mummies, were transported to Luxor and then Cairo. The present work constitutes Maspero's first study of the objects. It served as the basis for a more elaborate study of the findings he published eight years later ("Les Momies royales de Deir-el-Bahari", Paris, 1889). - Extremities somewhat rubbed, occasional light foxing. A pretty copy. Rarely seen at auction. Provenance: from the private library of the American diplomat and collector Elbert Eli Farman (1831-1911), Consul General of the US at Cairo from 1876 to 1881, with his bookplate to the front pastedown. Ibrahim-Hilmy I, 93 & II, 21. OCLC 8670353.

Appended is a dictionary of place-names - a gazetteer of the Empire which includes extensive entries on Mecca and Medina. - Untrimmed, light foxing throughout, but well preserved. Old collection stamp of Sig. Antonio Buonamici (motto: "undique rectus") on title-page. Very rare; only three copies known outside Italian libraries (Leipzig University Library, formerly in the library of the great Austrian oriental scholar Joseph von Hammer-Purgstall; Austrian National Library; and Lucian Blaga Central University Library of Cluj-Napoca, Romania); none in America or the UK. "Bona fide sine fraude" book label on red silk flyleaf. All edges red. A sumptuously bound copy of this important illustrated classic on falconry. From the collection of the Princes of Oettingen-Wallerstein, a still thriving Southern German noble family, with their inkstamp on the title. First published in 1561, this work remained one of the most popular of its kind until the 18th century; it contains a wealth of interesting observations on the habits of animals since confirmed by naturalists. The woodcuts show a hunting party resting, a hunter being paid for shooting a deer, several kinds of antlers, the training and care of hounds, various tools such as spades, shovels, hoes, etc.; a shepherdess with her flock of sheep, and a three-masted ship with hunters and hounds on bord. Numerous hunting tunes are added as woodcut music in the text. The fine full-page woodcut on the reverse of the title page shows the author presenting his work to King Charles IX. - Outer margin of title reinforced on verso (no loss to image); scattered light spotting, lightly browned. Occasional remarginings. Extremities lightly rubbed. A handsome, well-preserved copy from the library of Amédée Rigaud (1819-1874). Souhart 153. Thiébaud, p. 305. Brunet II, 1357.
