Hand-coloured engraved map (355 x 290 mm). Matted. Striking full color example of Tirion's detailed map. The map is highly detailed, including a number of the major roads and caravan routes, including those leading to Mekka and Medina. Two monument-style cartouches contain the title at upper right and three distance scales opposite. "This map shows a great advance on the others by showing the true extent of Turkish power. It has a curious mountain system, dividing the Peninsula into smaller regions" (Tibbets). Although it is mainly based on Delisle's map through de Fer, the map contains much original data. - Very well preserved. Tibbetts 250. Al Ankary p. 330. Al-Qasimi 160.

9 original gelatin silver photographs laid down on thick cream card (likely removed from an album), each measuring approx. 92 by 138 mm. Three captioned and/or numbered in the negative. Rare photographs of Muscat depicting variously, "The Rock of Muscat", the Al-Jalali Fort, and the Al-Mirani Fort. A number of the images are of a military nature, from which it is possible to surmise that the photographer was an officer: a torpedo being fired, a significant cache of weapons and troops (bluejackets) disembarking on the shore to be greeted by a crowd of civilians. Such scenes reflect the British presence in the Gulf of Oman at the time, where they were engaged in combatting the East African slave trade, suppressing the smuggling of arms and generally attempting to exert influence whenever possible. - Some marginal fading, otherwise very good. Original photographs of Muscat from this era are exceedingly rare, especially in this condition. The best-known examples were taken by the professional photographer A. R. Fernandez, but the present set certainly represents an amateur effort, and these are likely to be the only surviving prints of the images.
9 albumen prints (approx. 340 x 260 mm), each mounted on backing cardboard (ca. 400 x 330 mm). Three edges gilt. A fine set of nine albumen images of Egyptian sights and views, including Karnak, ships on the Nile, the Aswan cataract, the Temple of Edfu, murals at the Sanctuary at Karnak, camel drivers on the Sinai, etc. Pascal Sébah (1823-86), a leading photographer of the Middle East, was renowned for his well-judged compositions and for the excellent print quality achieved by his technician A. Laroche. His studio, founded in 1857, was continued under his brother Cosimo and his son Jean. A single image in this series is not by Sebah: a view of the island of Philae (near the First Cataract of the Nile) is signed "A. Beato" in a shaded portion of the image, identifiying this as the work of Antonio (Antoine) Beato (after 1832-1906), a British and Italian photographer noted for his genre works, portraits, views of the architecture and landscapes of Egypt and the other locations in the Mediterranean region. - Slight fading; well preserved.
1682(8), 481, (7) pp. With woodcut frontispiece and 6 woodcut plates, all folding. Later brown sheepskin with giltstamped red spine label. Marbled endpapers. 8vo. Somewhat later edition of this famous work that saw twelve editions by 1814, originally published under the title "The total discourse, of the rare adventures, and painefull peregrinations of long nineteene years travayles, from Scotland to the most famous kingdomes in Europe, Asia, and Affrica" in 1632; a first draft had appeared in 1614. No copy of this 1682 edition at auction in 35 years. - Lithgow, a Scot, travelled extensively throughout the Levant in three journeys between 1610 and 1622, visiting Greece, Constantinople and the Eastern Mediterranean from 1610-13; North Africa and Italy from 1614-19; and Spain from 1619-21. "He travelled mostly on foot and had a greater knowledge of the interior of the countries he visited than most travellers of this period. He provides interesting details of the society, men, and manners he observed" (Blackmer). Lithgow's work is "probably the earliest authority for coffee-drinking in Europe, Turkish baths, a pigeon post between Aleppo and Bagdad, the long Turkish tobacco-pipes, artificial incubation, and the importation (since about 1550) of currants from Zante to England" (DNB). - Frontispiece laid down. Several minor defects to paper, pre-dating the printing process, to fols. G2, Aa1, Ee3, and Hh5 (hence slight loss to individual letters). Trimmed rather closely, with some headlines shaved. Generally a nice, clean copy. Wing L2541. DNB 33, 361. OCLC 12646376. ESTC (RLIN) R028791. Cf. Blackmer 1021 (1640 second ed. only). Not in Howgego.
3 albums (all oblong 8vo) containing a total of 371 original photographs: 1) 71 photos (most 68 x 110 mm or 137 x 87 mm, with a few other variant sizes) mounted on 12 leaves, one loose photograph inserted. 2) 120 photos (most 60 x 85 mm, 90 x 140 mm or 84 x 135 mm, with a few other variant sizes) mounted on 12 leaves. 3) 181 photos (57 x 85 mm, 82 x 56 mm or 65 x 102 mm, with a few other variant sizes) mounted on 18 leaves. Original cloth-backed papered boards or imitation leather card binding; one album lacking covers. Large collection of early images of British military service in the Middle East, with historically important images of Faisal I of Iraq and his brother, Abdullah I of Jordan. One album, compiled by a member of No. 1 Armoured Car Company, is dated 1922 and is mainly focused on Egypt, while the other two contain a wide range of images from both sides of the Jordan, including a large aerial view of the Rest Camp at Jaffa, Amman (a mix of tourist views of the Roman theatre and remains of Turkish military transport), Tel Aviv, Jerusalem, Sarafand Camp and Ramleh Military Cemetery. The twin implements of British imperial military control in the form of armoured cars (Rolls Royce and Lancier) and aircraft (including Vimy and Vernon) are well represented. King Faisal I of Iraq is seen visiting Amman, while another shows his brother Abdullah I of Jordan arm-in-arm with an unidentified British political figure. - Covers with paper tears and some losses particularly to lower cover; extremities rubbed. A fine survival.
960 x 235 mm. Three albumen prints (vintage), mounted and joined. Fine photographic view of Jerusalem from Mount Olivet, assembled from three separate, conjoining images and measuring nearly a metre in length. Various buildings and sites identified by number; dated "1889" in a shaded area at lower right. From the Beirut-based studio of Tancrède Dumas, active during the period 1860-1890, with his stamp at lower left (series no. 523).

Four maps (600 x 620 mm) printed in black and brown, kept folded in a grey cloth pocket. Map of modern Syria, Iraq, Jordan and Saudi Arabia in four parts, illustrating the travels of Alois Musil in 1908-1915 and published as part of a series of books and maps by Musil. Musil "mapped the topography, collected a large number of plants and in 1911 helped make observations that led to the first general sequence of the Phanerozoic geological succession of north-west Arabia". An inset in the map shows terrain elevations for several parts of the region. - Alois Musil (1868-1944) was a Czech orientalist and explorer and professor of Oriental Studies at the University of Prague. The collection of works which includes this map was published by the American Geographical Society with funding by the American industrialist and Arabist Charles R. Crane (1858-1939). - In very good condition. Vincent, Saudi Arabia: an environmental overview, p. 9. Cf. (2), 177-352 pp. With numerous photographs. Original publisher's card covers. Containing (on pp. 177-206) a lengthy article on Musil's work by John Kirtland Wright. The article appeared before many of Musil's own lengthier pieces were published in 1928.

Oblong folio. 440 pp. Illustrated with tipped-in reproductions in colour of paintings by various artists, including paintings by Anthony M. Alonso and from the collection of the National Museum of Racing, Inc. Original calf-backed pictorial cloth, giltstamped spine. In original cloth drop-back box with colour illustration mounted on lid. Limited edition. The original publisher was unable to complete the full 100 copies; only four are reported in OCLC. Illustrated with paintings from the National Museum of Racing. A large tome on race horses in North America, including the history and evolution of the sport and stories of the famous racers and racetracks. "Extremely detailed, especially the pedigrees, racing records and index. I've come to rely on it daily as a valued reference" (John Prather, review in Bloodstock Advisory). "Everyone in the thoroughbred industry should have a copy. The colour plates alone are enough to justify buying it" (Dr. William Reed, review in Mare's Haven). - In excellent condition. OCLC 41093209.
Small folio (204 x 306 mm). (10), 140 pp. Text in Latin and Arabic, with some Hebrew and Greek, woodcut initials and tail-pieces. Tasteful modern sheep-backed marbled boards with giltstamped spine label. First edition of the "notes on the Gospel of Matthew" by the pioneering Arabist and physician Peter Kirsten (1577-1640), who started a private press in Breslau (Wroclaw) in 1607 (cf. Reske 130). His Arabic type, the first to be cut in Germany (by Peter von Selau), shows the influence of the Medicean types. - This is the issue with the letterpress title; another issue has an engraved title. Some copies lack the fifth preliminary leaf (present here): a singleton printed on different paper and in a different typeface, containing a 26-line laudatory poem in Hebrew by Jakob Ebert of Frankfurt, with the Latin translation on the recto. - Kirsten's notes on Matthew's Gospel "are mainly a comparison of the Arabic with the Greek version, and serve to explain the Arabic text. The Coptic and Syriac versions mentioned in the title are no more than marginal readings indicated as such in the Arabic manuscript which he used. These versions, as well as the Hebrew version, are mostly given in Latin translation, but occasionally a slight 12 pt Hebrew type-face is employed" (Smitskamp). - "One of the earliest non-Dutch scholar-typographers in [the] post-Medici tradition was the German Peter Kirsten (1575-1640), a physician of Breslau (Wroclaw), who had travelled and studied in both Italy and Leiden. He created a superior type-face, with some calligraphic qualities" (Roper). - Some very light browning and spotting, but a good copy. OCLC records two copies in the US (New York Public Library and University of Pennsylvania, both apparently with only four preliminary leaves). VD 17, 1:071605E. Smitskamp, PO 113. Fück 58, note 143.
