320 x 260 mm. 24 issues bound as one. With one map. Housed in contemporary Brinco binder. A rare and complete run of the Gulf Bird Watchers' Newsletter, a record of bird-watching in Bahrain and other Arabian Gulf states. The newsletter was put together by Michael Gallagher, who also authored "The Birds of Oman" (1980), as a way for largely English-speaking inhabitants of the Gulf States to compare sightings, exchange tips and aid with transport, and to provide a resource for bird watchers across the region. - The newsletter started out as meeting minutes from a group of eighteen bird watchers, but encouraged reader submissions. Birders submit recent reports of sightings, along with questions: "Caspian Terns [...] Do they breed nearby?" and lists of birding books purchased en masse from England and available for a small fee. Much focus is on the birds of Bahrain in particular, with reports of Reef Herons, curlews, black headed gulls, and cormorants near Sharjah and of various doves in the desert. Rare sightings receive particular attention: a Great Gray Shrike is seen "near Sar" on 4 July 1969, and a Water Rail, "the first since Spring 1967, was identified in the Janabya reed beds". With numerous lists of sightings, queries, and advice on how to preserve dead specimens. In later years a Sea Bird Report is added due to popular demand, and reports on sightings in the Gulf itself ("Phalaropes: These attractive birds are back again in the Gulf of Oman"). Complimenting the sea reports is a map titled "Sketch Map to Accompany Summary of the Bird Sightings of Captain Chilman During 1967, 1968 & 1969", illustrating the tanker routes through the Gulf from which these observations take place, and carefully noting a curious "NO BIRDS AREA" in the midst of the Gulf. - Altogether, a complete and engaging record of birding in Bahrain and surroundings. Well preserved. OCLC 18723858.

565 x 441 mm chromolithograph map, folding down to a 240 x 120 mm pamphlet. Original pink wrappers. A rare map of Jerusalem during the British Mandate Period, printed especially for British and allied forces stationed in the area. The map is a chromolithograph by the Düsseldorf-born artist Bernhard Gauer (1882-1955), with outer districts pleasantly hand-coloured in yellow and pale green and selected buildings depicted pictorially. On the reverse is a brief guide to everything a serviceman was expected to need in Jerusalem: churches of various denominations (Church of England, Methodist, Greek Orthodox, etc.), four Masonic lodges, officer's clubs for the well-to-do and YMCAs and hostels for the less affluent, and, naturally, bookshops. A map of Palestine and southern Syria is printed on the rear wrapper. An uncommon and thorough guide to the city, from the minutiae of taxi service rates to the locations of holy sites and Europeans' preferred neighborhoods. - Light wear, otherwise in excellent condition. 4to (172 x 256 mm). 107, (1) pp. Lithographed throughout. Contemporary half calf over blue marbled boards. Only edition of this rare instruction manual designed by the editor to help learners of Arabic overcome what Caussin de Perceval identified as the greatest difficulty in acquiring the language: the obstacle of reading the script. Dumont's workbook provides a total of 25 specimen texts, first in the original handwriting, then in a standardized transcription (such as might be more easily legible to learners familiar with printed Arabic), and finally a French translation. The contents are listed in a separate table at the end: they include examples such as an appointment as manager, various legal documents, literary and narrative pieces, private and business correspondence, and passages from the Qur'an. - Unnumbered pages (1-2) bound last as colophon leaf. A rare Franco-Algerian produced manual in good condition throughout. OCLC 14851800.

Large 8vo and folio (290 x 442 mm). 3 volumes. (4), LV, 406, (2) pp. (4), 355, (1) pp. Vol. 3 (atlas): title-page, index, and 18 double-sided engraved maps (ca. 45 x 31,5 cm neatline). Contemporary half calf with gilt title to spine and giltstamped morocco label to upper cover of the atlas, identifying the volumes as a gift from Bertrand's son. Original wrappers bound within. Marbled endpapers. First and only edition of Napoleon's memoirs of his French campaign in Egypt and Syria as dictated to his general and grand maréchal du palais, Henri-Gatien Bertrand (1773-1844), during his exile in St. Helena (1815-21). Bertrand was the only one of Napoleon's loyal companions in exile to have participated in the Egyptian campaign, which explains his choice of subject. - The two volumes of text present an ample, if subjective account of the famous military campaigns, enriched with transcripts of numerous official documents and letters relating to the events described. The beautiful atlas, engraved by Alexandre Moisy (1763-1827), presents 18 partly hand-coloured maps that are mostly in direct connection with the campaign. Including a general map of the south-eastern Mediterranean and the Red Sea, a map of the Mediterranean with the movements of the French and British fleets, a map of Egypt, a map of Syria and the Middle East, maps of the invasion of Malta, the Battle of the Nile, the Battle of the Pyramids, the Siege of Acre (with an engraved veduta of the city), the Battle of Mount Tabor, and the Battle of Aboukir. Four maps of parts of Italy, Switzerland and the Netherlands represent additional theatres of the War of the Second Coalition in 1799. - Bertrand's "Guerre d'Orient" was published 26 years after Napoleon's death in exile and three years after Bertrand's own passing, on the initiative of his son, general Henri-Alexandre-Arthur Bertrand, who gifted the copy at hand to its first owner, as indicated by the morocco cover label on the atlas. - Lower right corner of the atlas slightly bumped, occasional minor foxing and browning in all volumes. Atlas with several minor tears (not affecting the maps) and occasional marks and scribbles in ink, ballpoint, and crayon.

4to. 75, (1) ff. - (Bound with) II: Fabri, Felix. With a title woodcut depicting a pilgrim with two camels. Contemporary blindstamped leather over wooden boards. I: A fine Renaissance edition of Tucher's pilgrimage to the Holy Land, undertaken in 1479-80 and first published by Schönsberger in Augsburg in 1482. Tucher (1428-91) was a wealthy Nuremberg merchant who moved in humanistic circles; "his travel report is remarkable in several respects: geographically, because it provides a different, non-traditional route from Jerusalem to Mt. Sinai. Tucher departed from Gaza like Breydenbach, Count Solms, and Felix Fabri in 1483, and seems to have crossed the Tih by the pass el-Mureikhy (which he calls 'Roackie'). But Tucher's stations in the desert denote a different route and are even more difficult to reconcile with the known localities. In historical respect, Tucher's account is remarkable for abstaining largely from the fabulous and for revealing a sense of factual reporting, even though much space is given to miraculous episodes, as might be expected from a text of this genre and age. Finally, it is of linguistic interest" (ADB). - II: Editio princeps of Fabri's pilgrimage account. Felix Fabri, a native of Zurich and a Dominican preacher at Ulm, describes his two pilgrimages made to the Holy Land, the first in 1480, as chaplain to Georg von Stein, and the second in 1483-84 as chaplain to Johannes Truchsess von Waldburg, as part of the same party as Breydenbach. - Title-page of Tucher frayed. Some light staining throughout. Worldcat lists 3 copies of Tucher in the US, and 5 copies of Fabri. Not a single copy of Tucher in auction records; a copy of Fabri in a modern binding commanded £4140 at Sotheby's in 1998. I: VD 16, T 2164. Röhricht 390. ADB XXXVIII, 766. - II: VD 16, F 136. Röhricht 395 ("Ulm").
4to. 160 unnumbered pp. Title page printed in red and black. With a large title woodcut in red and black and 3 woodcuts in the text (1 page-sized cut, 2 repeats). Modern vellum bound to style, stored in custom cloth-lined slipcase. Scarce account of a 1556/59 journey to the Holy Land by the Silesian nobleman Melchior von Seydlitz. First published in 1580, the work begins with the events of the trip from Venice via the Greek islands to Cyprus, where the pilgrims stayed from July 4 through 14, 1556. An entire chapter is devoted to the description of the island, its geography, agriculture, salt works, etc. Substantive chapters are dedicated to Jerusalem, Damascus, and Constantinople. Also mentions Mecca, "16 days from Jerusalem". "Seylitz's party was taken captive in Palestine; the 'honourable warrior' Hand von Ehrenberg visited them in Ramleh" (cf. Tobler). The fine title woodcut shows the travellers' capture; the full-page illustrations depicts te Holy Sepulchre in Jerusalem. - Several contemporary underlinings and marginalia in red ink. Small, faint erased stamp to reverse of title. A fine copy. VD 16, ZV 14388. Röhricht 710. Yerasimos p. 245. Cf. Tobler 76.
