Folio (242 x 346 mm). (8), 9-462, (2) pp. With 149 text woodcuts by L. N. Parassole after Antonio Tempesta. Half vellum binding (c. 1900) with marbled boards. Re-issue, with new preliminary matter only, of the first Gospel printing in the interlinear Arabic and Latin version: the first work ever produced by the Typographia Medicea, founded by Pope Gregory XIII for spreading the word of Christ in the Orient and supervised by the oriental scholar G. B. Raimondi. The Arabic text is printed in Robert Granjon's famous large fount, generally considered the first satisfactory Arabic printing type. An Arabic-only version was produced at the same time. - Binding somewhat bumped; hinges beginning to split; interior variously browned in places. Removed from the library of the St. Charles Borromeo Seminary in Philadelphia with their stamps and ms. dedication by the Roman Congregatio de Propaganda on front pastedown. Darlow/Moule 1637 & 1643. Mortimer 64 (note). Streit XVI, p. 866, no. 5138.
Folio (220 x 334 mm). 9-462, (2) pp. With 149 text woodcuts by Leonardo Parassole after Antonio Tempesta. Early 20th century half vellum. The first Gospel printing in the interlinear Arabic and Latin version, prepared at the same time and printed by the same press as the first Arabic-only Gospel. These were the first works ever produced by Ferdinando de' Medici's "Medicea" press, founded by Pope Gregory XIII to spread the word of Christ in the Orient. Supervised by the able scholar Giovambattista Raimondi (1536-1614), its strength lay in oriental, especially Arabic, printing. After Raimondi's death, the press relocated to Florence. - The Arabic text is printed in Robert Granjon's famous large fount, generally considered the first satisfactory Arabic printing type; as all early printed editions of the Arabic Gospels, it is based on the Alexandrian Vulgate (cf. Darlow/M. 1636). The Latin version is by Leonardo Sionita. The work begins with page 9, without a title page or any preliminary matter at all: "the intended prefatory matter was apparently never published" (Darlow/M.); these first eight pages were not supplied until the 1619 re-issue. - Light browning as common; a light waterstain to the margin of the first leaves, but a good, fairly wide-margined copy. Provenance: handwritten ownership "C. R. Lies" (?), dated Rome, 1931, on upper pastedown; later bookplate of Guy Evans. Darlow/Moule 1637. Mortimer 64 (note). Streit XVI, p. 866, no. 5138. Ebert 7198. Graesse II, 531. Nagler XX, 326. Not in Adams.
Folio. 368 pp. With 149 large woodcuts. Contemporary paper wrappers. Rare first edition of the Gospels in Arabic; the first work to be issued from the Medicean Press, directed by G. B. Raimondi. Printed in Granjon's famous large fount, generally considered the first satisfactory Arabic printing type and appears here for the first time. Apart from the Latin title and colophon, the book is in Arabic throughout. Also in 1591 an Arabic-Latin edition was issued, more common than the present one and reprinted in 1619 and 1774. Illustrated with 149 large woodcuts from 67 blocks by Leonardo Parasole after Antonio Tempesta. - Some browning and waterstaining throughout; a few marginal tears. Untrimmed in the original temporary wrappers as issued. The Hauck copy commanded $75,000 at Sotheby's in 2006. Adams B 1822. Mortimer 64. Darlow/Moule 1636. Fück 54. Schnurrer 318. Smitskamp 374.
8vo. (22), 161, (7), 93, (3) pp. With title-page printed in red and black and decorated with Halma's engraved Athena and Demeter/Ceres device, a woodcut tailpiece, 3 woodcut decorative initials (3 different series) and a factotum built up from cast fleurons. With the main text in Arabic and a parallel Latin translation on the facing pages, and occasional words or lines in Greek, Hebrew and Syriac. Contemporary vellum, with manuscript spine title. First edition of the apocryphal Arabic Infancy Gospel, with the Arabic text on the versos and the Latin translation on the facing rectos. Sike, a noted orientalist from Bremen, based his edition on a manuscript that was formerly owned by Jacobus Golius, and the many notes include excerpts from the Qur'an and other works. The work narrates miracle stories from the first 12 years of Jesus's life, and probably originated in the fourth or fifth century. Although scholars refer to the text as the "Arabic Infancy Gospel", it was most likely originally written in Syriac. - The wide range of non-Latin types, with not only Arabic and the more common Greek and Hebrew, but also a few words of Syriac, was unusual at this date. Although the book does not explicitly say it was printed by Halma, he had a printing office in Utrecht at this date, while Vande Water appears to have been merely a bookseller-publisher. The device also appears in their joint publications and those of Halma alone, but apparently not in those of Vande Water alone. - With a label with the shelf number of the Neander library on pastedown and a later manuscript presentation inscription on flyleaf. Some foxing, mostly along the margins, otherwise in very good condition. A couple of minor stains on the binding, but otherwise also very good. Schnurrer, Bibliotheca Arabica 412. STCN (8 copies). Zenker, BO 1239. For the device: Van Huisstede & Brandhorst 618.

Hand-coloured engraved map (560 x 490 mm). Matted. Robert de Vaugondy’s spectacular 1753 map of the Ottoman Empire. Vaugondy maps the empire at its height, with territory spanning from the Black Sea to the southernmost extension of Arabia and west, inclusive of Persia, as far as the Mogol Empire of India. Includes the modern day nations of Turkey, Egypt, Saudi Arabia, Oman, Yemen, the United Arab Emirates, Iran, Iraq, Kuwait, Israel, Palestine, Jordan, Syria, Lebanon, Armenia, Azerbaijan, Georgia, and parts of Afghanistan, Pakistan, India, Uzbekistan, and Greece. Vaugondy employs all of the latest geographical information of the time incorporating both French and transliterations Arabic place names. This map offers splendid detail throughout inclusive of undersea shoals and reefs in the Red Sea and Persian Gulf, mountain ranges, lakes, rivers, and historical sites. A highly decorative title cartouche showing an Ottoman prince appears in the lower left quadrant. Five distance scales are in the lower right. Drawn by Robert de Vaugondy in 1753 and published in the 1757 issue of his Atlas Universal. Al-Qasimi 168. Al Ankary 353. McMinn 49. Not in Tibbetts.

Encompassing study of the Ottoman Empire in the late 17th century, at a time when its power in Europe was waning, but it remained a force to be reckoned with. Rare, especially when including the 4th volume ("Suite de l'Etat general de l'Empire otoman [...] Quatrieme tome") which contains accounts of the state of the Greek, Armenian and Maronite churches in the Ottoman Empire. "According to the Gennadius Library, this was translated by Petis de la Croix and edited by La Croix. In fact the privilege is ceded to La Croix, former secretary of the French embassy at Constantinople. It seems likely that there must be a family connection between the two, although the original family of Petis de la Croix was Petis, not La Croix" (Atabey). - Binding slightly rubbed, but on the whole in good condition. The Atabey copy (3 volumes only) commanded £15,000 at Sotheby's in 2002 (lot 646). Atabey 651. OCLC 470426837. Not in Blackmer or Cobham-Jeffrey.
