1917réf. 168341917. Unidentified compiler. Photograph album 1917-1920 documents high school life and World War I-era military activity in the United States capturing both educational environments and wartime training as experienced within local communities. The album provides primary visual evidence of student athletics teacher involvement and organized military exercises during the First World War supporting research into youth culture physical education and civilian engagement with wartime preparedness. The inclusion of both school-based and military imagery situates the material within the broader mobilization of American society during the war years. Unidentified compiler. Photograph album. 1917-1920. Album containing 112 silver gelatin photographs with an additional 50 loose images taken in locations including San Jacinto California and Charleston South Carolina. The photographs depict a range of subjects including high school environments where groups of students stand assembled outside a brick school building labeled "High School" and organized athletic teams including a basketball team posed with a "DHS" banner and a player holding a ball marked "DHS." Individual athletic activity is represented through images such as a hurdler mid-jump. Military content includes labeled scenes from 1917 showing "Battery A some Marines and Infantry" as well as an image of a blimp or Zeppelin in flight indicating contemporary military technology. A portrait of a young man in uniform posed with older adults in front of a fence suggests familial connections to military service. Additional photographs document everyday life and leisure including fishing scenes early automobiles such as Model T vehicles a woman cycling a child playing violin and a woman in a canoe. Informal captions provide commentary ranging from observational "Jumping for what the robins left" to humorous "Who are you smiling at" reflecting the compiler's personal engagement with the images. The album emerges from the period of American participation in World War I when military training and patriotic activity intersected with civilian institutions such as schools. Physical education and organized athletics were increasingly emphasized within secondary education often linked to ideals of discipline and preparedness. The geographic spread between California and South Carolina suggests mobility or travel possibly connected to professional or military contexts. Album of 44 pages with first 28 pages detached; photographs range in size from approximately 1.75 x 2.5 inches to 5.5 x 3.5 inches. Edge wear and small chips to detached leaves; overall good condition. A substantial visual record of high school life and wartime culture in the United States during the late 1910s. unknown

1941réf. 19551AB1941. University City 1941. 29 : 195 cm. 1 leaf text 1 leaf illustrations. Alvie E. Sanberg of University City Missouri invented a number of different goal improvements. On February 24 1936 he filed both a design patent application and a utility patent application for his new "Baketball Goal"; the two patents were issued a week apart in September of that same year. Prior to his invention nets had to be tied or lanced on to the hoop. But thanks to Sandberg all one neeeds to do is take loops from the net and hook them over the connectors circling the ring. This method is so effective that we could not think today of attaching the net any other mode. - See "Smithonian - The patent behind Basketball". unknown

"That's part of being on a team and that's part of life as well." He served four years and earned 11 battle stars. After World War II Morland coached at Springfield College in Massachusetts where he also earned a master's degree. Marsh 1907 - 1982 a native New Yorker was among the fundamental figures in the growth of college basketball as a major sport. Marsh was assistant sports editor of the New York Herald Tribune. Marsh started at the paper as a copy boy while still a student at City College. By 1930 he was regularly covering college basketball then a sport confined to local rivalries in cramped campus gyms. An occasional "big game" found its way to an armory. Ned Irish introduced intersectional doubleheaders to Madison Square Garden in December 1934 and Marsh was quick to see the potential of the sport. He helped organize the Metropolitan Basketball Writers Association that year and in 1938 was a leader in founding the N.I.T. which was originally sponsored by the writers group. Marsh was also attracted by college football partly because of the Herald Tribune's sponsorship of an All-Star game for the benefit of the Fresh Air Fund and partially because of his association with Columbia. He served three terms 1942-47 1951-53 and 1966-68 as Columbia's sports information director. Marsh along with Everett B. Morris of the Herald Tribune started the East-West College All-Star basketball game at Madison Square Garden in 1946. The annual event which ran until 1964 was also a benefit for the Fresh Air Fund. Marsh was not only active in the promotion of the Garden event but also in the assembling of the teams and maintaining the relationship with the N.C.A.A. and the colleges whose players appeared in the game. The All-Star game gave heightened visibility to college players and the schools they represented. Marsh was instrumental in developing the Eastern College Athletic Conference into a major factor in the organization of college sports. The E.C.A.C. began as the central office of Eastern Intercollegiate Athletics in 1938 primarily as a clearinghouse for the assignment of game officials. It later grew into an organization of over 100 colleges that conducted championships in several sports. Marsh founded the E.C.A.C. Service Bureau its publicity and statistical arm in 1947. The Herald Tribune closed in 1966 and Marsh worked for its ill-fated successor the World Journal Tribune until it closed May 5 1967. In July 1969 he became the full-time head of the E.C.A.C. Service Bureau in Manhattan. He retired in June 1973. Marsh and Edward Ehre founded and co-edited the hardcover book annual Best Sports Stories E.P. Dutton from 1945 to 1980 a book that helped elevate sportswriting and also recognized its quality.
