Alla fine la trova, si infatua di lei, la vuole a ogni costo e la sposa ma, nel momento in cui scopre che lei trasforma il sentimento in inganno, l'abbandona al suo destino e parte per un altro viaggio ancora più ardito: attraversare in solitario lo stretto di Bering. Nel libro si susseguono momenti diversi, dai paradisi tropicali, al ritrovamento dell'isola deserta, alle grandi burrasche e alla tenerezza di un animo forte e gentile.
