1838rif. 002758Whitaker and Co. 1838 304 p. 8vo. Full black calf hardcover 5 banded spine gilt decorated with red and brown title labels gilt bordered covers gilt and blind dentelle edges marble leaf edges and endpapers text illustrated with tissue guarded wood and steel engravings. Measures: 1.75 W x 6 D x 8.5 H inches. Provenance: "The White House" TWH retail label adhered to the rear endpapers offers a historical reference. TWH was the first department store in San Francisco; it opened in 1854 and closed in 1965 located at Post and Grant. In the 19th century most bookshop sales in the US took place in departments of major department stores like TWH. Wholly plausible the book was acquired in the mid 19th century by a previous owner on a pleasure trip downtown SF which meant dressing up--hats gloves and stockings required. TWH was a place to be seen like its competitor The City of Paris and was known for its French atmosphere. Raphael Weill one of SF's merchant princes built a grand store for a booming city with an eager clientele. The purveyor defined good taste and satisfied desires for anything French. Certainly paints a colorful picture of the TWH shopping experience when this fine book was acquired at TWH's book department located on the main selling floor of the grand store. CONDITION NOTES: Very good; light wear not commensurate with age and use e.g. sporadic wear at extremities and light foxing throughout text ink ownership inscription on front free endpapers text pages clean and light age-toned strong square spine/tight binding. A nice copy. Hardcover. Very Good/No Jacket. Whitaker and Co. hardcover
1808rif. 235The Monthly Anthology and Boston Review was a monthly periodical published in Boston from 1803 to 1811. Its full title was The Monthly Anthology and Boston Review Containing Sketches and Reports of Philosophy Religion History Arts and Manners. It was produced by a group of intellectuals known as the Anthology Society or Anthology Club who operated as a "society of gentlemen" contributing without pay to promote literary standards. The magazine underwent several editorial changes and title variations during its run: · 1803–1804: Edited by David Phineas Adams under the pseudonym Sylvanus Per-se. · 1804–1811: Edited by William Emerson father of Ralph Waldo Emerson and later by Samuel Cooper Thacher and other members of the Anthology Club. · Publishers: While early volumes were published by Munroe and Francis Volume V 1808 aligns with the period where the publication was handled by Snelling and Simons in Boston. This volume continued the magazine's mission of reviewing literature and presenting essays on philosophy religion and the arts. This copy is in good condition especially considering its age of 218 years in this world!! A few of he first few pages are detached from the spine but the rest of the book is solid with pages all strongly attached. The pages are clean and not discolored or damaged and all text is legible.
