Dibdin 1776-1847 was perhaps the most visible figure among the bibliophiles and bibliographers of the first half of the 19th century. His "Bibliomania" 1809 was an amusing account of the then-current craze of book collecting among wealthy English aristocrats and the book while cynical did much to encourage the mania. And it was at his suggestion that the Roxburghe Club was founded in 1812. Our binding is typical of the elegant work produced by William Matthews a Scot who became the leading binder in America during the second half of the 19th century. He was head of the bindery at D. Appleton and Company was an early member of the Grolier Club and was an important advisor in the formation of the Club Bindery a firm organized with the generally realized intention of executing fine American bindings that rivalled the best being produced in Europe. This set with the additional set of etchings on india paper by George Lewis of a classic work of the utmost importance for its wealth of eye-witness information and anecdotes about printed books manuscripts buildings other artefacts and people both from past centuries and from the author's own day for the extraordinary collection of illustrations mostly drawn during the tour itself and finally as a sumptuous piece of book production. As soon as the book appeared leading scholars derided Dibdin for his lack of scholarship especially concerning early manuscripts and printed books. But one must distinguish between the extensive and extremely useful information about things and people Dibdin saw during his 1818 tour and his own interpretations and conclusions which now serve only as a window to the attitudes of the time. Dibdin's enthusiasm readable style and entertaining anecdotes moreover caught the mood of his age making the book extremely popular and influential. Lewis' A Series of Groups. was intended to accompany Dibdin's Tour but was rejected by Dibdin as unworthy of his book. Lewis most perturbed issued them at his own expense and presented his case in the eight-page Advertisement which was separately printed. Jackson 48; 56; 56n: Windle & Pippin A38a; A44; D13. It charts in wonderful detail his six and a -half months tour buying -or where unavailable admiring - book treasures in France and Germany. Dibdin is at his most exuberant - abroad for the first time in his life - and recounting his adventures with great spirit and a degree of self-congratulation : his complicated exhange negotiations which secured for Earl Spencer the 'Stuttgart Virgils' from le Brett the Royal Librarian and the King of Wurtemburg were described in a letter to Spencer as 'one of the most difficult cautiously and delicately-conducted negotiations in the annals of bibliographical diplomacy'.and Dibdin does not stint the reader in his account. Of this second edition he wrote in his Reminiscences: "A second edition - not divested of ornaments but contrariwise possessing some which do not appertain to its precursor. possessing in the running notes critical replies and biographical memoranda advantages which in these respects give it a superiority over the first."-Dibdin's Reminiscences v. 2 p. 696. He is listed as a subscriber to Dibdin's Sermons 1825 and was described by Isaac N. Arnold as "an amateur artist of considerable merit a fine scholar and a very agreeable gentleman". Walter Sidney Scott 1900-1980 an author was the owner of an impressive Dibdin collection and spent considerable time working on a bibliographical catalogue of Dibdin's works "A Dibdin Library" 1962 which was never published he briefly mentions these volumes his second edition of Dibdin's "France and Germany" in that catalogue noting the binding as by Forbes.
