L'opera conobbe notevole successo in Francia e in altri paesi d'Europa con numerose ristampe e traduzioni in diverse lingue. Wilson The literary travelogue p. 10: "Under the convenient disguise of letters to his family Dupaty the distinguished jurist embraces a variety of subjects that extend far beyond landscapes and tourist attractions. . Dupaty gives dramatic and thoughtful descriptions of paintings statues and landscapes but he also enriches the narrative with perceptive evaluations of the social and legal conditions in the Italian city-states. He also occasionally intersperses prose descriptions of nature with verse quotations some which are his own translations of the Latin Elegaic poets. Roman ruins inspire the author with melancholy reveries . but he scrutinizes the different legal systems most of which are terribly corrupt and penal codes with the eye of a professional lawyer"; Boucher de la Richarderie II p. 498: "On croira facilement que frappé comme l'étoit Dupaty des vices de la législation criminelle en France il a porté une vue attentive sur celle des divers Etats de l'Ita-lie: c'est une des parties de son Voyage où il a montré le plus de sagacité dans ses observations."; Fossati Bellani I 417; Barbier II 10439. I only have moderate foxing & age-browning. Jean-Baptiste Mercier Dupaty 1746-1788 French magistrate and man of letters. Lettres sur L'Italie first published in 1785 was a significant work of enlightenment travel writing in which Dupaty 'transformed Rousseau’s moralized philosophy into a historicized aesthetic in a series of letters suffused with a powerful emotional style'. Dupaty's descriptions of walking through the city 'provided his readers with an effective means of reinscribing the intimate presence of history into their own wanderings through Rome. This kind of wandering in the imagined footsteps of the ancients was a way to see the world through a mobile gaze that connected the walker directly to the sights and sounds that had inspired writers from the past' Atkinson & Caviglia 2018 'Making sense of Rome in the eighteenth century' Word & Image 34.3 p. 221. The work was immediately popular in France although Dupaty's critique of the Vatican saw it placed on the Index. ~Robust packaging. Overseas tracking available on request.
