1721réf. 167476Venice: 24 January 1721. Navigating the aftermath of the Mississippi bubble A short and plaintive letter wherein Law reflects on his chastened circumstances after the final implosion of the Mississippi Bubble and his hurried flight from France. When the Mississippi Bubble burst the bankrupted French people suggested a number of fates for Law with life imprisonment or execution being the most popular. His friends in the French establishment - notably Louis-Henri Duc de Bourbon 1692-1740 who had escaped the implosion unscathed - were able to arrange for him to flee the country. Over the winter of 1720-21 he travelled first to Brussels and then after realizing that this was still too close to Paris he crossed the Alps to reach Venice by 19 January. Despite popular sentiment some influential figures both within France and without retained a degree of faith in Law's economic capabilities. Here Law thanks his correspondent for having written to the diplomat Théodore Chevignard de Chavigny 1687-1771 on his behalf - although the letter is not addressed it seems likely that Bourbon was Law's contact. Bifolium folded to 289 x 204 mm written in black ink across two pages. Light creasing and browning along folds otherwise in fine condition. unknown
