"Professor Plucknett has such a solid reputation on both sides of the Atlantic that one expects from his pen only what is scholarly and accurate.Nor is the expectation likely to be disappointed in this book. Plucknett's book is not.a mere epitome of what is to be found elsewhere. He has explored on his own account many regions of legal history and even where the ground has been already quartered he has fresh methods of mapping it. The title which he has chosen is in view of the contents of the volume rather a narrow one. It might equally well have been A Concise History of English Law.In conjunction with Readings on the History and System of the Common Law by Dean Pound.this book will give an excellent grounding to the student of English legal history." Written between 1604 and 1605 De Jure Praedae On the Law of Prize which remained in manuscript until 1868 is the earliest significant legal work by Hugo Grotius 1583-1645. His discussion of prize is not restricted to issues of legality; he seeks to determine also whether the capture of enemy material is honorable or expedient. He pursues these issues through an elegant argument based on natural law. Remarkable for its intellectual finesse and literary quality De Jure Praedae is equally significant as the source of two of his most important writings. Mare Liberum 1609 is based on one of its chapters. It also contains an early version of De Jure Belli ac Pacis 1625. In this regard the book offers a valuable introduction to the issues explored in these later works. Appended to this reprint is Robert J. Fruin's valuable essay An Unpublished Work of Hugo Grotius's. Written in 1868 and later republished in English in 1925 it remains the principal study of this work. Hugo Grotius 1583-1645 a pre-eminent contributor to international legal doctrine was an influential Dutch jurist philosopher and theologian. His other works include De Jure Belli ac Pacis On the Law of War and Peace 1625 one of the great treatises on international law and Mare Liberum The Freedom of the Seas 1609 a compelling plea for free trade among nations. unknown books

There is no question that larger formats have dominated Anglo-American legal publishing. However as Hoeflich and Moreland demonstrate books of smaller size were of no lesser importance. Whether carried by a Carolingian royal official a territorial judge riding circuit a Philadelphia farmer or a primary school student little law books made legal principles practical and portable. A rare photographic record of the Robert H. Terrell Law School an important historically Black institution established in Washington DC in 1931 after Howard University discontinued its evening law program. Named for Robert Heberton Terrell 1857-1925 a pioneering African American jurist and judge of the District of Columbia Municipal Court the coeducational school provided opportunities for legal education to Black students during an era of widespread racial discrimination. Its graduates went on to careers in law government and public service. Produced by the celebrated Scurlock Studio one of Washington's foremost African American photographic establishments this composite portrait depicts the school's founder and dean George Arthur Parker together with its six graduates of 1944 including one woman. The unusually small graduating class reflects the wartime circumstances affecting American legal education. The photograph is also a notable example of the work of the Scurlock Studio which documented Washington's African American professional political and cultural communities for much of the twentieth century. Of particular interest is the family connection to the desegregation of American legal education. Elwin Franklin Jarmon Jr. son of the graduate pictured at lower left was among the first six African American students admitted to the University of Texas School of Law in 1950 following the Supreme Court's landmark decision in Sweatt v. Painter 339 U.S. 629 1950. That decision rejecting the adequacy of segregated legal education in Texas was an important precursor to Brown v. Board of Education 1954. The portrait thus offers a connection between two generations of African American legal education and the strugg. unknown books
