Original cloth pictorial dust-jackets. § The fifth volume in this series of Blake's illuminated books edited overall by David Bindman one of the premier Blake scholars. "In an introductory essay the editors directly address the nature of the poem's complexity and demonstrate how Blake's methods set out to disconcert conventional concepts of time space and human identity. The editors also present plate by plate commentary on how the illustrations contribute to the creation of a composite visual-verbal style. The extensive notes will assist readers through Milton its central themes and its byway its heights and depths. Milton is a difficult and cryptic poem.and scholars will find much new information in this volume. The editors describe the experimental graphic techniques Blake used in Milton and uncover the multiple layers of revision he lavished on the copy reproduced here. The introduction and notes offer fresh insights into the difficult relationship between Blake and his patron William Hayley that in turn shaped Blake's sense of his great predecessor John Milton himself and the role he would play in Milton the text" blurb. 2007réf. 1232832007. New York: Center for the Book Arts 2007. Large 8vo 9 1/2 x 6 1/2 ins. 36pp. title-page and 12 poems on loose folded sheets each illustrated in a variety of media and signed on the verso by the illustrator. All contained in an orange folding paper wrapper. Fine. § Number 13 of an edition limited to 39 copies in all. A collaborative artist book in portfolio created by eight women students at the Center for Book Arts in New York under the direction of master printer Barbara Henry representing in letterpress and illustration twelve poems from William Blake's Songs of Innocence and of Experience. Each of the nine leaves is signed by the artist-printer. The poems and their illustrators are: The Garden of Love by Delphi Basilicato; The Fly by Amy Bronstein; A Dream by Bonnie McLaughlin; The Human Abstract by Amber McMillan; The Laughing Song/The Poison Tree by Sarah Nicholls; The Shepherd/The Tyger by Michelle Raccagni; The Blossom/The Sick Rose by Rosie Schaap; Infant Joy/Infant Sorrow by Louisa Swift; Title-page by Barbara Henry. The poems in the Songs of Innocence and of Experience contrast the spiritual freedom of childhood with the binds and hypocrisies of the adult world and are at once philosophical political and radical. Blake wrote engraved printed and colored the Songs himself making him arguably one of the first creators of an artist's book and an excellent subject for these women book artists of the 21st century. unknown books

An original engraving printed surface 195 × 148 mm plus the credits paper size 377 × 271 mm matted with archival board and behind glass in a simple but apposite polished wooden frame visible image size 237 × 187 mm external dimensions 540 × 448 mm. Paper lightly cockled with a tiny closed tear to the bottom margin of the sheet well clear of the printed surface; essentially in fine condition. 'William Blake's "Illustrations of the Book of Job" primarily refers to a series of twenty-two engraved prints published 1826 by Blake illustrating the biblical Book of Job. It also refers to two earlier sets of watercolours by Blake on the same subject 1806 and 1821. The engraved "Illustrations" are considered to be Blake's greatest masterpieces in the medium of engraving and were also a rare commercial and critical success for Blake' Wikipedia. Plate 13 quotes Job 38:1-2 and 28 'Then the Lord answered Job out of the whirlwind / Who is this that darkeneth counsel by words without knowledge . Hath the Rain a Father & Who hath begotten the Drops of the Dew' and Psalms 104:3 'Who maketh the Clouds his Chariot & walketh on the Wings of the Wind'. The Blake authority G.E. Bentley Jr 'Blake Books. Annotated Catalogues of William Blake's Writings in Illuminated Printing .' Clarendon Press 1977 records that 'According to Linnell's "Job" accounts 150 "Proof" sets on India paper watermarked J WHATMAN TURKEY MILL 1825 and 65 on French paper watermarked J WHATMAN 1825 were printed by Lahee in March 1826. Then the word "Proof" was removed from the plates though it is still faintly visible on the copperplates and in some pulls and 100 sets were printed on drawing paper'. The example we have for sale is one of the latter group printed after the word 'Proof' was removed from the original copperplate. William Blake [for John Linnell] unknown

1798réf. 1006531798. London: J. Johnson 1798. All 4 full-page copperplate engravings after Fuseli signed by Blake as the engraver. Matted good impressions of the plates complete with the imprints untrimmed. § One of Blake's scarcer works seldom seen in the trade or at auction; there was also a volume on English history published in the same year. We have had one other copy in the last seven years and one other separate set of the plates. The plates are strong and lively renditions of moments such as the death of Cleopatra; with the recent discovery of an original drawing by Fuseli for Allen's English History now in the Essick Collection we now are quite sure that the illustrations for both volumes were drawn by Fuseli.
