Publisher's yellow cloth with cover decorations in blue and green gilt spine and cover lettering. Spne a bit sunned and minor extremity wear else a very good copy.Colonel Sir Thomas Hungerford Holdich 1843-1929 was an English geographer and president of the Royal Geographical Society. He is best known as Superintendent of Frontier Surveys in British India and author of numerous books including The Gates of India The Countries of the King's Award and Political Frontiers and Boundary Making. During peacetime Holdich was largely occupied with the survey of India. He was the chief surveyor on the Afghan Boundary Commission of 1884–86. The Commission soon found itself in the midst of a crisis inflamed by the Panjdeh incident. When this nearly led to war with Russia Holdich was put in charge of fortifying Herat against a potential Russian invasion. He later served on the Tasmar Boundary Commission of 1894 the Pamir Boundary Commission of 1895 and the Perso-Baluchistan Boundary Commission of 1896. He was awarded the Founder's Gold Medal of the Royal Geographical Society in 1887 in recognition of his work . Frederick H. Stokes Company hardcover

A curious book of poems lamenting over what the author considered extreme untoward nudity on view at the Panama Exhibition in San Francisco 1915. An excerpt from the peom A Devil at the Fair - "In ancient Rome its most licentious days / Ne'er saw such filth exposed to public gaze / But decent fig leaves from all eyes obscured / Debasing sights which here must be endured." Heavy wear to corners and edges of boards. Front hinge is cracked and rear hinge is worn. Boards remain attached and textblock is tightly bound. Text pages have occasional spots of foxing but are clean overall; although there is browning to a few pages where flowers appear to have once been pressed. There is heavier foxing to the plates which are bound into the rear. Dampstaining to margins of many plates; however images are not affected. Two pages of plates have open tears to the margins and one has been repaired with extra paper adhered to the verso. A few short closed tears and chips to margins of some pages. Bookplate of a goat wearing a crown to front pastedown. Ownership name of James G. Morgan in pen to front free endpaper.
