1856réf. 34064Copenhagen: Emilius Baerentzen 1856. With Attractive Views of the U.S. Virgin Islands An impressive lithographic tour of Denmark and her colonies. While the majority of the plates show local Danish scenes and landscapes nine views show scenes in America: three in Greenland and six of islands in the Danish West Indies the eventual U.S. Virgin Islands. The views in America are: Greenland: 1 "Parti ved Jakobshavn. Grönland." Chromolithograph of a native hunting party gathered on an icy shore. 2 "Colonie Omenak. Grönland." View of a small Greenland colony with a large ship offshore and clusters of colonists engaged in various activities in the foreground. 3 "Kingoa-Dalen. Grönland." View of a traveling party cooking on an open fire in a lush valley. Perhaps the party was on a portage; a canoe is shown in the lower left corner. Danish West Indies now the U.S. Virgin Islands: 1 "Christianssted. St. Croix." A panoramic view of the harbor showing a large church and Danish fort. 2 "St. Jan. Parti af det Indre." A wide view of the lush landscape showing settlers cooking over an open fire in the foreground. 3 "Cruxbay. St. Jan." A pastoral scene of activity just outside the settlement walls. 4 "Parti af St. Thomas." A cityscape of the port of St. Thomas displaying the city's impressive architecture. 5 "Parti ved Frederikssted. St. Croix." A river scene showing five men in a rowboat trolling for fish and a large Danish fort to the far right. 6 "St. Thomas. Parti af Byen og Havnen." A close-up view of the harbor showing a bustling downtown area and a full port including an early steamer. An attractive and rare assemblage of views. In addition to the Greenland chromolithograph five additional chromolithographs of Danish scenes are present along with scenes in Iceland and the Faroe Islands. There are very few visual images of the U.S. Virgin Islands from this early date. Oblong folio. Contemporary maroon cloth ornate gilt-lettered covers a.e.g. Second volume rebacked at an early date corners repaired. Rubbed. Minor foxing. Occasionally dampstaining in lower margin. Images generally clean. Old ownership stamp on front fly leaf of first volume. Very good. hardcover books

1872réf. 32003Godthaab: Lars Møller 1872. Examination of Greenland's Local Councils An apparent continuation of Møller's four-part series on regional Greenland local councils. The fourth part discusses the northern councils from 1863 to 1867 and this pamphlet resumes where that installment leaves off. Each was produced separately though intended to form a complete work. The large folding lithographic plate includes various local statistics pertinent to the councils. An early Greenland imprint and quite rare. Not mentioned by Oldendow. Contemporary plain wrappers. 1920réf. 1831GREENLAND ESKIMOS: A Greenlandic landscape with a house and two Inuits preparing food over the fire signed Emanuel A. Petersen. Oil on canvas measures 14.5 x 20.8 inches 37×53 cm a few minor peelings crackling circa 1920s. Emanuel A. Petersen 1894-1948 is famous as a "Grønlands-maler" painting in a romantic style at a time when photography was already documenting the landscape. He aimed at a beautification a certain perception of harmony showing nature people and dwellings from a distance; he does not share in the life of the scene but records and reproduces. Petersen's view was not one from the inside out but from the outside in. His gaze was mostly concerned with a pictorial and natural beauty the beauty of colours and of light. books
réf. 30967quarto 1 page plus stamp less address leaf formerly folded in very good clean and legible condition. "…I must beg your kind forgiveness for my apparent neglect of your kindness many times I have laid out in my mind the outline of a letter to you but alas imperative business during the day and excessive fatigue in the evening have prevented it…I read with pleasure your protest against the infidelity of the "Vestiges of Creation". I will send you the Review you write if you will point out the move by which I can send it. When you write again I wish you would tell me what you think of the manner in which the Author of the "Kingdom of Christ" meets the Quaker and Socinian heresy in mere conversations with them it is difficult to deal with them seeing they both fly off from Scripture Standard…" Greenland was not historically notable but the few references I can find suggest that he was an Englishman working in New York possibly as American editor of a British religious periodical. He was later financial editor of a periodical in New Orleans. Rev. Ransom was also apparently a transplanted Englishman who had come to New York via Canada at first officiating at a church west of Albany where he became close friends with James Fennimore Cooper whom he strongly defended in the author's libel suit against journalist Park Benjamin. It's apparent that both Greenland and Ransom were orthodox Anglicans perturbed by "heresies" and critical of Englishman Frederick Maurice's "Kingdom of Christ" which held that the church should be a united body that transcended the diversity and prejudices of individuals factions and sets. But the most important comment in Greenland's letter is about the book "Vestiges of the Natural History of Creation" originally published anonymously in England in 1844 and just reprinted in New York at the start of 1845. Greenland and Ransom undoubtedly considered this the work of "infidels". But the book is significant because it was read appreciatively by a still-unknown Charles Darwin who like other scientists was amused by its scholarly deficiencies but was probably impressed that it "brought together various ideas of stellar evolution with the progressive transmutation of species in an accessible narrative which tied together numerous scientific theories of the age." There is speculation that the antagonism which the book aroused among clergymen like Ransom was one reason that Darwin was so reluctant fourteen years later to publish his own momentous "Origin of Species." books
1818réf. 24993London: John Baskett and others printers 1818. 12 works folio. 12 1/2 x 8 inches and smaller. Disbound or stitched A fascinating series spanning the whole of the period when whaling was carried out on a successful commercial basis in the waters off Greenland. After an abortive start by the South Sea Company between 1724 and 1732 the British whaling fleet operated off Greenland and the Davis Strait throughout the remainder of the 18th century with increasing success due to a large degree to the succession of bounties granted to ship owners by the British Government. The present selection of acts of parliament includes a number concerning the bounty: the first dated 16th January 1732 makes law "that a Bounty will be paid on the Return of every Ship of 200 tons and over imployed by His Majesty's Subjects in the Whale Fishery". For the bounty to be paid certain stringent criteria had to be met; these increased as the century progressed. By the time of the last Act in the present group March 1818 the Greenland whalers were reporting declining catches and were already beginning to turn their attention to other whaling grounds i.e. largely in the Pacific and Antarctic. This group offers and interesting series of snapshots of the industry during its most productive century. The acts comprise: 1. An Act for encouraging the Greenland Fishery. 1732. Stitched later wrappers. Exemption from duty extended for a nine year period. 2. An Act for the further Encouragment of the Whale Fishery carried on by His Majesty's British Subjects. 1733. Stitched later wrappers. The introduction of a bounty for ships over 200 tons. 3. An Act for continuing the several Laws therein mentioned . including granting a further Bounty for all Ships employed in the Whale Fishery during the present War; for exempting Harponers and others . from being impressed. No date but circa 1750. Spine reinforced. The bounty raised by a third other measures to help the trade. 4. An Act for granting a additional Bounty on Ships employed in the Greenland and Whale Fishery for a limited time. No adte but circa 1761. Disbound. The increased bounty confirmed for another five years. 5.An Act for further continuing several Acts . for the Encouragement of the Whale Fishery. 1768. Stitched. 6. An Act for the better Support and Establishment of the Greenland and Whale Fishery. 1771. Stitched. The rules about the amount of bounty to be paid has changed with additional laws concerning vessels of American origin exemption from duty extended to include the Gulf of St. Lawrence certain members of a whaler's crew to be exempt from being pressed into service in the Royal Navy etc. 7.An Act to explain and amend Two Acts made . with respect to the Limits of the Greenland Seas and Davis's Streights . and to enlarge the Time for the Return of the Vessels employed in the Whale Fisheries. 1780. Stitched. 8. An Act for granting an additional Bounty on Ships employed in the Greenland and Whale Fishery for a limited Time. 1782. Disbound. The bounty retained for a further five years. 9. An Act for allowing Vessels employed in the Greenland Whale Fishery to complete their full Number of Men at certain Ports for the Present Season. 1805. Spine strengthened. Whaling ships permitted to call in to ports in Scotland the Orkneys and the Shetland Islands to find men to complete their crews. 10. An Act for allowing until the Signature of Preliminary Articles of Peace Vessels . to complete their full Number of Men at certain ports. 1806. Spine strenghtened. An extension of the previous act. 11. An Act to revive and continue for five years several Laws. 1815. Strengthened spine. Several prvious acts re-confirmed. 12. An Act to amend an Act . so far as it relates to the Oaths thereby required. 1818. Unbound. Concerns the oaths required from owners/captains before the bounty due would be released to them. 2013br.
