La Peste first appeared in French from Gallimard in 1947 but Camus had been at work on it for years: his notebooks record early notes toward "the redeeming plague" in 1941 and he reworked the manuscript through the war much of it written in occupied southern France while his wife Francine was cut off from him in Algeria. He drew on the historical plague visitations at Oran and set the novel in the 1940s. SKU TO-2026-013 Knopf hardcover
1947réf. 152785Sceaux: Les Tirages à Part du Palimugre 1947. The first edition a finely printed limited edition of Albert Camus's luminous essay Prométhée aux Enfers in which the future Nobel laureate turns to the myth of Prometheus to reflect on revolt suffering and hope in the shadow of the modern age. Small octavo written in French original printed wrappers with turn-ins. One of only 285 copies this being one of the 250 printed on Vélin Blanc paper numbered 182. In near fine condition in the original glassine. Prométhée aux Enfers written in 1946 is a short lyrical essay by Albert Camus that would later be gathered into his collection L'Été. Taking the chained figure of Prometheus the Titan who stole fire from the gods for the sake of humankind as an emblem of revolt and endurance Camus meditates on what it means to keep faith with both justice and beauty in an age of catastrophe. Albert Camus one of the towering figures of twentieth-century literature and a leading voice of absurdist and existential thought was awarded the Nobel Prize in Literature in 1957 becoming one of the youngest laureates in the history of the prize. 1955réf. 195244London: Hamish Hamilton 1955. One must imagine Sisyphus happy First edition in English including a new preface by Camus and collecting the title essay alongside "Summer in Algiers" "The Minotaur or The Stop in Oran" "Helen's Exile" "Return to Tipasa" and "The Artist and His Time". Camus's absurdist treatise on the philosophical problem of suicide was first published as Le Mythe de Sisyphe in 1942. Addressing his English readers Camus comments that "written fifteen years ago in 1940 amidst the French and European disaster this book declares that even within the limits of nihilism it is possible to find the means to proceed beyond nihilism. This book is in a certain sense the most personal of those I have published in English". It acts as a non-fictional companion to his novel L'Étranger 1942. The translator Justin O'Brien 1906-1968 was a professor of French at Columbia University who translated many works by Camus and certain works by Jean-Paul Sartre and André Gide including Gide's collected journals. Octavo. Original blue boards spine lettered in silver. With dust jacket. A few pages neatly marked up in pencil; jacket unclipped spine toned two short closed tears small chips to ends and corners: a very good copy in like jacket. hardcover
