1958réf. 2353590New York: Alfred A. Knopf 1958. First American Edition. Hard Cover. Very Good/Very Good. Karsh Yousuf. First American edition. Jacket a bit toned board edges faded endpapers lightly soiled. 1958 Hard Cover. 213 pp. Photographic portrait of Camus by Yousuf Karsh on rear jacket panel. A collection of short stories by the author of The Stranger. Includes: The Adulterous Woman; The Renegade; The Silent Men; The Guest; The Artist at Work; The Growing Stone. "From a variety of masterfully rendered perspectives these six stories depict people at painful odds with the world around them. A wife can only surrender to a desert night by betraying her husband. An artist struggles to honor his own aspirations as well as society's expectations of him. A missionary brutally converted to the worship of a tribal fetish is left with but an echo of his identity. Whether set in North Africa Paris or Brazil the stories in Exile and the Kingdom are probing portraits of spiritual exile and man's perpetual search for an inner kingdom in which to be reborn. They display Camus at the height of his powers. Alfred A. Knopf hardcover

La Peste first appeared in French from Gallimard in 1947 but Camus had been at work on it for years: his notebooks record early notes toward "the redeeming plague" in 1941 and he reworked the manuscript through the war much of it written in occupied southern France while his wife Francine was cut off from him in Algeria. He drew on the historical plague visitations at Oran and set the novel in the 1940s. SKU TO-2026-013 Knopf hardcover
