With an 87-pp. volume of commentary in German. Loose as issued in a linen-covered chemise titling in black on front cover. Commentary volume in original paper wrapper. WITH 55 LEAVES FROM INCUNABULA issued by German Swiss Dutch Czech and Italian presses ALL WITH ONE OR MORE WOODCUTS 32 OF THESE HAND-COLORED. ◆Front cover of commentary volume with thin six-inch brown stain along head edge but the volume otherwise clean and fresh the leaves with occasional browning or minor staining but excellent specimens overall the hand coloring often quite attractive. Arranged according to the city in which they were printed this is a wonderful collection of 55 incunabular leaves all illustrated with woodcuts. The group includes important early images large and small with 32 of them hand painted often with brilliant memorable color. Although every leaf here is of interest there are some leaves that deserve special mention: the 1471 Zainer printing of "Heiligenleben" the earliest leaf included; a number of leaves from herbals Bibles and lives of the saints; leaves representing two different editions of Brant's "Stultifera Navis" a Basel 1500 edition of Aesop and the celebrated 1499 Aldine "Hypnerotomachia Poliphili." A full-page woodcut from Koberger's "Schatzbehalter" "Treasure Book" 1491 shows Korah Dathan and Abiram being swallowed up by the Earth for their rebellion against God while Moses and Aaron pray as God sends fire to destroy the rebels. Among the hand-painted woodcuts are several that are outstanding both for the composition of large complex images and for exuberant coloring. These include Pharoah's daughter rescuing the baby Moses as well as the adult Moses with the burning bush both from the German Bible printed by Koberger in 1483; a view of the city of Perugia in Schedel's "Weltchronik" 1493; and another Schedel leaf depicting the martyrdoms of the Apostles Andrew and Thomas. The 55 specimens included here would serve very well either as a final capstone in an advanced collection or else an outstanding nucleus for a beginning collector of illustrated incunabular leaves. Several of the books represented are difficult to obtain and most of the ones that can be procured are very expensive. Weiss & Co. Antiquariat unknown books

4to (152 x 208 mm). 3 volumes. (6), 236 ff. (6), 203 ff. (8), 284 ff. With woodcut printer's device to title-pages. Early 19th century full vellum with giltstamped spines and double labels. All edges gilt and goffered with a floral design. Rare collection of correspondence by significant personalities and rulers, including Andrea Doria, Annibale Caro, Baldassare Castiglione, Bernardo and Pietro Bibiena, Cardinal Bessarion, Lorenzo and Cosimo de' Medici, Pietro Gonzaga, Hieronimo Fracastoro, Giovanni Bembo, Francesco Guiccardini, Emperor Charles V, Pope Clement VII (Giulio de' Medici), etc. Important both as historical and linguistic documents; the definitive edition. - Ruscelli was a prolific and versatile Italian scholar who published on topics ranging from cartography to alchemy. A native of Viterbo, he eventually settled in Venice, where the first edition of "Delle Lettere Di Principi" was published in 1562 in a single volume. The collection demonstrates the rich social context of 16th century Venice, as Ruscelli himself is a classic example of the multidisciplinary Renaissance man. - Light foxing throughout and occasional light soiling or waterstaining. A prettily bound set with 19th century collection stamp to title-pages of vols. 1 and 3. Edit 16, CNCE 16617. Adams L 564. BM-STC Italian 376. Melzi II, 115f. Gamba 1470 ("a very valuable collection").
Folio (274 x 402 mm). (64), 406 pp., final blank leaf (and leaf *4 blank). Engraved title-page. With woodcut initials and 39 engraved illustrations (20 double-page). 17th c. green vellum, spine gilt in compartments. Marbled ebdpapers and edges. First edition. "One of the most beautifully printed treatises on military architecture of the entire century" (de la Croix). Alghisi worked for Ercole II and Alfonso II d'Este of Ferrara as both a civil and military architect, constructing churches and theatres as well as fortifications. He took a theoretical approach to fortress design, describing the plans for fortresses with increasing numbers of bastions, reaching the astounding number of 21 (the fortress of Palmanova was unusual in having as many as nine). Bastions had become an increasingly important element of fortifications during the 16th century as a result of the need to provide defence against cannon fire which tall medieval towers failed to do (providing, as they did, a large area for the cannon to target). Bastions were lower, thicker and provided a means for the defenders of a fortress to overlook the attackers from a platform large enough to hold cannons of their own. - Some brownstaining; rust mark on pp. 174-175 from a pair of scissors. A few engravings shaved. Joints cracking, spine-ends chipped. Provenance: from the collection of Thomas Fremantle, 3rd Baron Cottesloe (1862-1956), commander of the Territorial Army and president of the Society for Army History Research. Edit 16, CNCE 1140. 4to (22 × 16.5 cm). With engraved title-page, folding woodcut plate, 3 woodcut volvelles with moving parts, and numerous woodcut illustrations in text. Including a world map in two hemispheres (incl. America and a scattering of islands at the location of Australia) on two facing pages, they reappear with volvelle attachments on both sides of leaf 149 and leaf 153. Contemporary limp sheepskin parchment. First edition of a well-illustrated encyclopaedia of astronomical and surveying instruments available since classical history, by the Italian astronomer Giovanni Paolo Gallucci (1538-ca. 1621), a well-known private teacher to the Venetian nobility and founding member of the Second Venetian Academy. It gives a comprehensive summary of the knowledge of astronomy, cosmography and mathematics at the time of Galileo. "It describes instruments designed by others (Finé, Apian, Gemma Frisius, etc.) and gives credit to the original inventors. The one exception to this is the Visorio, which Gallucci claims as his own, but an identical instrument by Waldseemüller can be found illustrated in the 1512 edition of Margarita Philosophica by Gregor Reisch. Other instruments, such as the Hemispherical Uranico (a complicated device used for computations dealing with the moon, sun and stars), appear to be of Gallucci's invention. Besides the usual portable instruments, he also includes a simple quadrant and a two-ringed armillary built into the church of Santa Maria Novella in Florence" (Erwin Tomash). For some of the instruments this is the only description available. The present second issue of the first edition appeared a year after the first. With the owner's label of the Capuchin friar and astronomer Agostino da Piacenza (1747-1839) and the relating library stamp "Bibliotheca Capucinorum Placentiae" on the engraved title-page. A few marginal water stains and some occasional spots, otherwise in very good condition. Adams G 167. Burden 96. Cantamessa 1688. Crone 98. Erwin Tomash 23. Shirley 199. for Gallucci: G.
