Jerome Kern 1885-1945 is best known as a pioneering American composer who transformed musical theatre by integrating songs into coherent plots. He famously composed the 1927 masterpiece Show Boat and its enduring standards like "Ol' Man River" and wrote hundreds of pop and jazz hits for the Great American Songbook. Kern's contributions span both Broadway and Hollywood shaping the structure of the modern musical. Throughout his career Kern composed over 700 songs used in more than 100 stage and film works. Many of his compositions transcend their original contexts and are celebrated jazz and pop standards. During the teens and 1920s Kern composed for countless stage shows. Once Hollywood found its voice during the 1930s and 1940s Kern shifted to Hollywood composing iconic soundtracks for movie musicals. He won an Academy Award for Best Original Song and was nominated for others and is considered one of the most celebrated figures in the history of American popular music. The great American writer and public intellectual Gore Vidal 1925-2012 was known for his cynical epigrammatic wit. His novels and essays criticized the social and sexual norms he perceived as driving American life. While fiercely progressive his traditionalist streak and elitist literary sensibilities sometimes led him to call himself a "small-r conservative" in the classical sense. He passionately wanted to "conserve" the original constitutional republic and hated what he saw as the decay of traditional American institutions free speech and personal liberty. Wikipedia Five are portraits; some include Vidal at work dated between 1960 and 1975; at work and in social situations between 1957 and 1970 including with Cyril Ritchard on Visit to a Small Planet; at the premiere of Romulus; with Edie Adams at opening of The Best Man in 1964; with the cast of Weekend in 1970; and on a Laugh-In TV special in 1978. 1786réf. List3855Worcester Massachusetts: Isaiah Thomas 1786. 12 pp measuring 9 ½ x 6 inches. Toned with wear and damage to edges but entirely legible; excellent. Massachusetts printer and newspaper publisher Isaiah Thomas published The Worcester Magazine between 1786 and 1788 after suspending his weekly Massachusetts Spy in protest of a tax on newspaper advertisements enacted in Massachusetts to pay off Revolutionary War debt. The Magazine printed the same news as the Spy but also commentary on the progress or lack thereof towards a US Constitution. Offered here is a copy of The Worcester Magazine from the second week of May 1786. Alongside a history of the Revolutionary War from the British Annual Register regular news and blurbs about effeminate men and "deceived" young ladies the newspaper comments on the Congress of the Confederation: "A correspondent wants to know how long the wise men of America will suffer fools to guide the national helm . It is equally shameful and astonishing that America after conquering all her enemies . should by withholding the necessary powers from Congress languish in disjointed poverty and thereby invite the insults of all the rascals in creation. Such inconsistent unnational conduct demonstrates the want and necessity of a MASTER; and if much longer persisted in will produce ONE. . If they have not the virtue to be freemen let them be slaves and lick the dust of a tyrant's foot. ." At the foot of the final page is a request for Massachusettsans to "instruct their Representatives" to have the "unjust or impolitick" tax on newspaper advertisements repealed. .
