1912ref. 55371New York: Comstock & Gest Inc 1912. Softcover. vg to near fine. Small folio. 8 unpaginated double-sided leaves. Illustrated wrappers with gorgeous art-deco style orientalist pochoir images printed in hues of purple green orange and white. A now scarce and lavishly printed promotional publication announcing the upcoming run of Max Reinhardt's "Sumurun" a "wordless play in 9 scenes" at the Casino Theater in New York. The majority of the text is a scene by scene narration of the plot of the story written in prose text accompanied by photographic images of the corresponding scenes and characters. The introductory text discusses the significance of the work and the history of past stagings of the production to date. The final text page contains the lyrics to the "Song of Sumurun." Illustrated throughout in black and green with decorative geometric borders as well a title page a few initials and small vignettes all finely screen-printed. B/W photographic reproductions after staged studio photographs of characters and scenes from the production. Also included is a large photographic portrait of Max Reinhardt at the front as well as portraits of producer Winthrop Ames and composer Victor Hollaender at the the rear. Oddly no cast credits are listed here which may indicate that this was printed before the cast for the American production had been completely finalized. The striking art deco covers were designed by German graphic artist Hans Flato 1887-1950. By 1910 pioneering German theatrical director and producer Max Reinhardt had for many years been acclaimed for his avant-garde and expressionistic style. Based on a suggestion to create an oriental pantomime Reinhardt commissioned writer Friedrich Freksa 1882-1955 to shape a story for the show. Freksa created a narrative for the wordless pantomime based on some of the stories from the Arabian Nights. Composer and conductor Victor Hollaender 1866-1940 was charged with creating the music. The stage design costuming and effects were all in the hands of Reinhardt's frequent collaborator Ernst Stern 1876-1954. These men were all noted and acclaimed creative figures in their own right. Upon it's premiere on April 22nd 1910 at Reinhardt's Kammerspiele in Berlin the show was lauded. The success was such that the following month Reinhardt moved the production to his Deutsches Theater next door which could hold a larger audience. Critics and audiences at the time noted the novel and dramatic effects of Reinhardt's stripped down but expressive style in elevating the story and giving it a primal feel. His use of a runway stage - with his actors emerging from and disappearing into the audience - was said to make the storytelling more engrossing and break down barriers between the characters and the viewers. In June of that year Reinhardt released a filmed version his stage production in German cinemas. The following year in 1911 the stage show's success took it twice to London and to Vienna as well. In 1912 Broadway producer Winthrop Ames brought Sumurun to America and in doing so brought Reinhardt and his work to the United States for the very first time. Ames imported the original production from Berlin featuring the very same crew that had made the initial run such a success along with some of the original cast. Composer Victor Hollaender was brought over to conduct the music himself. The title role in the American production was performed by Camilla Eibenschütz 1884-1959 replacing Grete Wiesenthal from the original German production. The American premiere was held at New York's noted Casino Theater on January 16th 1912. It was the very first time that a runway stage had been used in a major American theatrical production. Although only initially planned for a limited engagement the production's success lead to a total of 62 performances in New York. Following this the American production moved to Chicago and then to Boston. This was later followed by a run of performances in Paris. In 1920 famed German director Ernst Lubitsch directed a originally conceived lavish film version of Sumurun with Jenny Hasselqvist in the title role released in America as "One Arabian Night." Wrappers with minor to light smudges creases and closed tears to the very edges with images unaffected. There is a slight chip at the bottom right corner of the front cover. 1950ref. 1053New York City 1950. Oblong folio. 280 x 360 mm.; 11 x 14 inches. 14 pp. illustrated with 14 large black and white photographs. Bound in a large paper pad of thick paper stock; leaves loose from binding. An ownership sticker with the name Mrs. Paul E. Eisler of Eastchester New York is pasted to the front cover. Original hand-made children's story book set in New York City and illustrated with black and white photographs. The narrative tells the story of Jennifer and Peter's visit to the skating rink in Central Park while their parents are out of town. They are supervised by their Aunt Josephine and Jennifer carries a camera to document their excursion. The content of each photograph is different yet each contains similar elements. The background of the cityscape are black and white drawings and the two children and Aunt Josephine are represented by "pipe cleaner dolls" which are positioned before the various backgrounds. The children are dressed in stocking caps and scarves and are accompanied by their dog Hannibal also made of "pipe cleaners". Each photograph has a typed text pasted to the lower margin of the page explaining the scene and each description is made up of one or two short sentences. The production value of this story book suggests a very sophisticated family with access to various media to present the story. The background settings of the photos are well drawn images of New York City and capture the atmosphere around the Upper East Side near Central Park. The "pipe cleaner dolls" are very well formed and give the photos a three dimensional quality that draws the attention of the viewer and gives the image a highly finished look. They legends that appear at the bottom of the page are not hand written but typed suggesting the intervention of an adult hand in the production. So the question may be asked what part did the children play in the making of this very special book. Jennifer may have written the story of their adventure while their parents were away. She may very well have been the photographer taking the photos for the book. The children could very well have set the poses of the characters and when the photos were printed and ready for insertion into the book they may have assembled the book pasted-in the photos and the text and prepared it as a gift to Mrs. Eisler of Eastchester. In any event Jennifer and her brother Peter documented a wonderful visit to the ice rink in Central Park and helped to produce a book which became a memento of this event for someone to cherish for years to come. . unknown books

1953ref. 001298No Location: No Publisher 1953. First Edition . Soft cover. Very Good Plus. 21.25" x 9.25. Landau Jay. Original illustration ink on stiff board by Jay Landau later famed painter Jacob Landau for the sci-fi pulp story "Death of A Sensitive" from the May 1953 issue of Science Fiction Plus. 9 7/8" x 9" overall size image size is most of that scan. Note:layout editor's note at the bottom of the image in scan which says 7 3/8" refers to the size the image is to be in the printed issue not the 9" width of this original. This was executed as line art on copper as were most of Landau's pulp illustrations; this is this black and white for reproduction in that May issue. Annotation on front see scan also annotations on reverse. Former paste foxing from layout process one the reverse;none on front. Image itself is fine as used by the publisher. Used to illustrate the Harry Bates story "Death of a Sensitive" -a story deemed by Hugo Gernsback's editor Sam Moskowitz to be the best he ever published in the magazine Bates was the author of in Astounding Science Fiction in 1940 "Farewell to the Master" which later became the basis for the classic sci-fi film "The Day the Earth Stood Still". A moody illustration by Landau who as the pulp illustrator he was at that time is hard to find on the original sci-fi art market. Though he loved science fiction and did a fair amount of early magazine illustration he later was able to concentrate solely on the stylish impactful often socially conscious and always psychologically disturbing mainstream painting which was his first love and for which he later gained famed. His early professional work for publications was done as Jay Landau or J. Landau often signed only "Landau" but the later work was of course by "Jacob Landau". Landau died in November 2001 at age of 85. The intimidating moody nature of this illustration is to a degree in keeping with that later painting style. The May issue of Science Fiction Plus is not itself included here; scan shown with this listing for reference. Llng1 No Publisher paperback
