Monks was a Daily Mail journalist embedded in France with the RAF in the early days prceding the Battle of Britain and was close friends with a number of the men who fought the seemingly inexhaustible waves of Luftwaffe seeking to subjugate Europe under fascism. His central point is one that is often overlooked in stirring accounts of Spitfires and Hurricanes scrambling across the skies of Europe; no man had previous to the early days of WW2 fought another man at 30000 feet in an "orange crate" made out of aluminium and canvas screaming across the sky at 350mph firing 9600 rounds per minute. Everything we now know about being a fighter pilot had to be developed from the ground up by these men; additionally it had to be conceived by men whose average age was 22 and upon whose barely-of-age shoulders rested the security and future of their society and way of life. 87731. 1933réf. 88047London: The Fortune Press n.d. 1933. First U.K. Edition. Octavo. 19.5cm. Publisher's pebble grain black cloth titled in green to spine. Lacks dustjacket. xviii; 263pp.; 1. One of several bindings probably the least glamorous the book can appear in red dark blue black dark green etc. with varying text to the spine crediting or not Montague Summers in his role as translator. Strong and tight bound in a particularly hardwearing cloth with some light bumpiing to spine ends and some dulling of the spine text some minor wear to the extremities and a slight bowing to the lower edge of the rear board which appears to have been caused by an issue with excessive binding glue rather than something later traces are also present on the front pastedown; internally clean and fresh with some soiling to the lower edge fore-edge untrimmed and with most pages after the first 30 or so unopened. A very good copy with some unconventional wear. A typically eccentric bit of esoterica comprising Franciscan Father Taillepied's attempt to 'prove' the existence of spirits and the afterlife with a number of researched and recounted myths and phenomena originally published in French in 1588. No such text could survive into the twentieth century with the very un-Reverend Montague Summers getting his hands on it and this is presented as a new translation by Summers with an additional introduction and commentary by him in typical irresistible barnstorming fashion. Like his translation of the Malleus Mallificarum and his other earlier 20th century esoteric cornerstone texts the end result owes as much to Summers' enthusiasm for the field as it does to its original author and is none the worse for it. Although named after the English miniaturist Richard Cosway 1742-1821 the desirable "Cosway Binding" with its jewel-like portrait miniature set into a fine binding was first developed at the turn of the century by J.H. Stonehouse director of London's Henry Sotheran Booksellers. Their miniatures were painstakingly crafted by the talented painter Miss C. B. Currie 1849-1940. As the style grew in popularity other publishing houses quickly began to reproduce this technique-each developing their own desirable take on the aesthetic-referred to as "Cosway style.". Fine. Report to the second annual convention of the S.W.O.C. documenting the union's successes in the southern states during its first year of existence and as well as union-busting activities which as might be imagined were rampant throughout the south during this period especially against a C.I.O.-affiliated union with a reputation for radicalism and a racial integration. A locus of anti-labor sentiment appears to have been the industrial community of Gadsden Alabama where the authors document numerous instances of direct threats against steelworkers including some that were racially motivated. Rare; as in our experience is most southern steelworkers material from this period. S.W.O.C. District No. 3 unknown books
