ref. 74813Michel Delacroix Paris - Chez Riton Original lithograph Hand signed in pencil lower right Edition EA lower left Image size: 48 x 57.5 cm Sheet size: 56 x 75.5 cm classic paris street scene with bicycle cafes and shops. Michel Delacroix master of the Naïf Folk Art or Naive the most popular and successful artists in the world today. A self-styled "painter of dreams and of the poetic past" Delacroix has devoted five decades to painting a city he calls "the Paris of then" the magical place where he was born where he spent his boyhood and where he continues to live to this day. But the Paris Delacroix paints is not the urban metropolis of the present. It is the dream-like place the city became in the 1940's during the Occupation when "we suddenly jumped fifty years into the past. No more cars in the streets very few lights. Paris suddenly became very quiet very dark and though people were afraid there was a brotherhood and spirit that was very delightful." For Delacroix who was then a child of seven and spared by his age from understanding "the cruelties and absurdities" of war it was "the one great adventure of my life." And it is to this special Paris - the Paris of by-gone years and innocent splendors - that Delacroix has returned to over and over again in his gentle works. Theses works renowned for their graceful balance of "the earthy and the urban the cosmic and the ordinary" have captivated private collectors museums and ordinary people alike throughout the world earning the artist both universal acclaim and numerous awards.

1856ref. 92346n. l. 1856. Fine. Delacroix Asks the Great Architect Hittorff to Support His Candidacy for the Académie n. l. 29 décembre 1856 13.2 x 20.6 cm Un bifeuillet Autograph letter signed by Eugène Delacroix with autograh date ""29 December 1856"" one and a half pages on a bifolium with usual folds. A precious letter by Delacroix to his celebrated colleague who laid out the squares avenues and gardens of the capital while the painter adorned its ceilings. Delacroix here addresses the architect responsible for the embellishment of the Champs-Élysées the Place de la Concorde and the Avenue de l'Étoile. As architect to the City of Paris and to the Government he who drew up the plans for the vast renovations in the Bois de Boulogne and its two lakes. He moved within the painter's circle his name appears in Delacroix's Journal and had been since 1853 a member of the Académie des Beaux-Arts: the very institution to which Delacroix had sought election seven times opposed each time by Ingres. Success came only days after this letter: Delacroix was elected to the most-coveted Institut on 10 January 1857 to the seat left vacant by painter Paul Delaroche. ""It is a month now since I have been suffering from a cold that has degenerated into an inflammation of the throat and for about twelve days I have been strictly confined indoors for fear of the outside cold. I deeply regret not having been able before this moment to come and speak with you regarding my candidacy. I hope however to be able to go out by the end of this week or the beginning of next: but in the meantime I take the liberty of commending myself to the kindness and obligingness you have so kindly shown me .
