'Stories are carried from the desert Kingdoms of IndiaPersia and Arabia of a time overshadowed by the tall and glorious Shahryar of Sasan. They are stories first told to the King under the black tent of nightby his Queen Shahrazad - stories of Sinbad the Sailor Pearl-harvest the lute-playerAla al-Din and the black dwarf Princess Shans al-Nahar and the wonderful Jinni of the Lamp.' This is a completely new version of the Arabian Nights - translated and adapted by Geraldine McCaughrean - many of the stories have never appeared before in a collection for children. They include fablesromancesnarrative jokesand fairy tales and are linked to one another by the King and Queen's own love story.Shahrazad's attempts to stave off execution by telling just one more story have been expanded to fuller effect than in any previous version. It is written in a style that is cleargripping and poetic - one which conveys the flavour of the original and preserves the context of a magicjinni-riddencrueldesert world.
