1653réf. AQ27507London: Printed by John Field. Printer to the Parliament 1653. 599ff including the terminal blank Ddd12. With an engraved title page. Closely trimmed to margins with regular shaving of headlines occasionally touching text; Uu2 with lower corner torn away with loss of text to 9 lines of text of Luke XXXI and XXXII. Eighteenth-century inscriptions some scribbled out to front fly-leaves - which like the title and the following leaf also have some foxing and chipping with a small hole. Bound with: PSALTER. The whole book of psalms: Collected into English Meeter by Thomas Sternhold John Hopkins and others. Set forth and allowed to be sung in all churches. London. Printed by John Field Printer to the Parliament 1654. 48ff. Closely trimmed to margins with regular shaving of headlines occasionally touching text. Small printing flaw to D6 with loss to 5 lines of text. ESTC R40771. Wing B2455. Likely eighteenth-century elaborately gilt-tooled black morocco brass clasp. The gilt decoration largely worn away some loss to corners a little rubbing to extremities. Gauffering to gilt edges the clasp has slightly damaged the fore-edges towards the end where it has evidently dragged along the text block. A handsome copy of the 'Pearl' Bible with just a few minor flaws printed by John Field during the rule of Cromwell's Commonwealth at the behest of Parliament. Although produced in large numbers Darlow and Moule suggests in excess of 20000 their diminutive size the small volumes were designed to fit into the pocket of the British souls and poor quality of paper means that few survive in such condition: . Conforming to the Authorised King James Version the Field Bible was printed with a haste unheard of in Bible production and is thus notorious for its wildly varying inaccuracies and misprints. In this copy the three errors noted by Darlow and Moule to John IX. 21 Romans VI.13 and1 Corinthians VI.9 have all been corrected but three further to Matthew VI. 24 John II.10 and III.21 identified by Lee Wilson are all incorrrect. "The Standard Oil Company was the first major industrial monopoly in the United States. But clouding this success was one important failure. John D. Rockefeller's great wealth and power did not protect him from defeat at the hands of the magazine journalist Ida Minerva tarbell. The forceful muckraker historian of the Standard Oil Company did more than single out Rockefeller as the architect and the driving force behind the trust. She offered the oil man as the symbol and the cause of all that she felt was wrong in the national life." - Introduction. Average wear. Binding intact. After the composition of the story by the great sage Valmiki in the form of Ramayana there had been a great boost in its popularity which very much impressed the masses in general. Soon the story was patronised in regional languages by the local authors but there was no dearth of the literature in Prakrit as well. In due course of time the story was patronised in Jainism. The first creation of the story in Jainism was in Prakrt by Vimala Suri under the title of Paumacharya by about the 1st century A.D. followed by Vasudevahindi by Sanghadasa in the start of the seventh century A.D. while Ravisen Eastern Book Linkers hardcover

1837réf. List3613Philadelphia: Firth Meignen & Co. Publishers & Importers of Music and Musical Instruments No. 41 Chestnut Street 1837. Seven pages complete including dance figures. Folio sheet music. Very good with scattered foxing and light edge wear. A rare early American operatic dance arrangement by Francis Johnson 1792-1844 widely regarded as the first published Black composer in the United States. Issued circa 1837 this work adapts themes from Vincenzo Bellini's opera La Sonnambula 1831 into a set of quadrilles with concluding waltz arranged for piano forte and structured for social dancing. The internal headings "Pantalon" "Ladies Chain" etc. retain the formal quadrille sequence reflecting the popularity of European ballroom forms in Philadelphia during the period. Johnson a Philadelphia bandleader composer and virtuoso keyed bugle player published approximately seventy compositions over nearly three decades. Active in Philadelphia from at least the 1810s he became one of the city's most sought-after musicians leading ensembles for cotillions public balls military functions and civic celebrations. In 1818 became the first African-American composer known to have sheet music published in the United States. His band performed for elite social events and public commemorations including celebrations for the Marquis de Lafayette's visit to Philadelphia. In 1838 he toured Europe with his ensemble performing in England and reportedly receiving a silver trumpet from Queen Victoria. This piece was composed a year earlier per the Johnson page at Musicalgeography.com six years after Bellini's work. Operatic paraphrases and dance adaptations of fashionable European works were central to Johnson's output. Overall a quite scarce early title from an important composer. We find two copies in OCLC 692295106 at AAS and the William Clements Library. See "Francis Johnson's Compositions - With Sheet Music" https://musicalgeography.org/francis-johnsons-compositions/. The first complete Bible to be produced entirely in shorthand engraved throughout by John Sturt and including the metrical psalms of Sternhold and Hopkins translated from the King James Authorised Version by English writing master and stenographer William Addy c.1618-c.1695. Addy's shorthand system was extensively outlined in his Stenographia or The art of short- writing compleated in a far more compendious method than any yet extant London 1684. As he himself acknowledged it owed a great debt to the system of Jeremiah Rich d. c. 1660. Darlow & Moule transcribe a note from the B.M. copy which explains the method of production: 'This Bible in Stenography my Brethren at sight and all others skill'd in ye Art of Sculpture know it's Engraven; but in a Peculiar Manner. It was written by Mr. Addy in ungum'd Ink burnished on the wax and then run through with the Engraver by John Sturt'. The old bookseller's description tipped into this copy refers to the work as the 'Pepys shorthand Bible' referencing J.W. Carlton's 1933 article "Samuel Pepys his Short-hand Books" Transactions of the Bibliographical Society. New Series Vol. XIV p.83 1933; however Pepys copy is described as featuring 'a rapturous dedication to William of Orange' which was not added until the 1689 reissue confusingly with the title continuing to display the 1687 date of this Bible.
