Occasional minimal light soiling and or foxing but overall a clean and crisp example of this magnificent and beautiful edition. For this second edition of his magnificent production Barlow commissioned Aphra Behn then at the height of her popularity as a playwright poet and translator to write a quatrain summarizing the fable and to be engraved on the 110 plates illustrating the fables. In order to substitute Behn's verses for those of Thomas Philipot d. 1682 the lower area of the plate needed to be burnished down and the new verses engraved onto the plate in place of the earlier ones. "The workman doing the burnishing feared damaging the bottom border of the design above the verse: in many places traces of the tops of the letters in Philipot's top lines remain. In a few instances a small new plate for the new verse had to be inserted."Hodnett. "I Conceive it necessary to say concerning the Present Edition of this Work; That it exceeds the Former by a careful Correction of the Latin Copy and by a more Exact Translation from the Latest and Best French Edition. The Life of Aesop likewise is illustrated with Thirty one new Copper Plates. The Ingenious Mrs. A. Behn has been so obliging as to perform the English Poetry which in short comprehends the Sense of the Fable and Moral: Whereof to say much were needless since it may sufficiently recommend it self to all Persons of Understanding." To the Reader leaf. "The fables and plates are printed here in the same manner as in the first edition the French version on the verso of each leaf facing the plate and Latin version on the recto of the following leaf. The thirty-one additional plates illustrating the life of Æsop are placed at the end of the volume. They are preceded by the plate representing Æsop surrounded by animals and birds which formed the first plate to the first edition. Plate No. 17 is usually wanting being generally removed as too free a character. Nearly all of them are signed "Tho: Dudley fecit". Grolier Wither to Prior. Francis Barlow 1626-1704 was the first English-born book illustrator. He was also the first English etcher modern animal and bird artist recorder of sporting scenes political cartoonist and possibly modern landscape artist. The lifelikeness of his animal and bird drawings prints and paintings attracted the admiration of the founders of the Royal Society and allied him with the scientific spirit of the seventeenth century. Barlow was moreover an interesting illustrator of great freshness and vigor." Edward Hodnett. Five Centuries of English Book Illustration p. 54. "This seventeenth-century polyglot English-French-Latin Aesop is handsomely illustrated with engravings after designs by Francis Barlow 1626-1702 an English painter renowned for his pictures of country life and field sports. He was perhaps the finest English draughtsman of animal scenes in the seventeenth century. Barlow who published the book at his own expense explains in his preface that he intends the work to contribute to the education of young people. This is the first edition; the relatively few copies known are all survivors of the Great Fire of London which swept over the printer's premises in 1666" Morgan Library Early Children's Books - citing the 1666 first edition. Felix Thornley Cobbold 1841-1909 was a British barrister and Liberal Party politician. Late 18th-century English green calf covers with gilt intertwining feather and pointillé border smooth spine gold-paneled and tooled with 3 different all-over patterns red calf lettering piece gilt edges marbled endleaves worn: spine cracked headcaps gone. Provenance: a member of the Fletcher family: engraved armorial bookplate two gryphons as supporters motto “Dieu pour nous” the shield described by Burke as “sable a cross flory argent between four escallops. Crest a bloodhound azure ducally gorged or.” An illustrated pocket edition of 400 fables from Aesop and other traditions specifically intended for children preceded by Giulio Landi’s life of the semi-mythic fabulist. The charming simple but decisively cut woodcut illustrations are typical of the early productions of the Remondini firm who used the blocks as well in several Latin editions of the fables. Giovanni Antonio Remondini 1634-1711 an enterprising businessman whose earliest commercial successes were in wool production was the founder of the long-lived Bassano print publishing firm later known for its paper production. Specialized at first in the production of popular prints mainly engravings the firm’s typographic activities were circumscribed until the mid-18th century by the Venetian monopoly of book production; thus the Remondinis’ earlier typographical output was limited to popular chapbooks and devotional works for a local readership usually in small formats and often illustrated with quickly but skillfully cut woodcuts as here. This undated edition corresponds with the below-cited ICCU record in its pagination and fingerprints but several mispaginations described in ICCU were here corrected. The ICCU editors note two variants one with the place of publication given as Bassano only and this state or issue with imprint “In Venetia et in Bassano” dubbed variant B. ICCU ITICCULO1E04628; cf. M. Infelise I Remondini di Bassano 1980 pp. 23-33 and 132-3. Gio. Antonio Remondini unknown

1928Best.-Nr. 5856London United Kingdom: Ernest Benn Limited 1928. First Edition. hardcover. Near Fine. Marcus Gheeraerts the Elder. Publication: London Ernest Benn Limited 1928 Formatting: 4to pp. 52. Condition Report: Near Fine. The publisher’s original blue cloth binding remains exceptionally sharp with the elaborate gilt foliate borders and spine titling remarkably bright and unoxidised. The boards are tight and square showing only the faintest whisper of shelf-wear to the extremities. Internally the volume is remarkably clean and fresh; the text block is firm and the pages are entirely free from the foxing often found in titles of this period preserving the crispness of the Alcuin Press typography and the depth of Gheeraerts’s etchings. The rare original dust wrapper has survived well though it displays characteristic even tanning and minor dust-soiling across the panels alongside some slight creasing and nibbling to the fragile edges. Unclipped and highly presentable it remains a robust example. Catalogue Note: A highly attractive 1928 edition of Aesop's fables presenting twenty-four classic tales translated by the influential seventeenth-century journalist and pamphleteer Sir Roger L'Estrange. L'Estrange's translation noted for its vernacular vigour and colloquial charm was originally published in 1692. Here it is brilliantly paired with the celebrated illustrations of Marcus Gheeraerts the Elder. Gheeraerts's etchings first published in 1567 are considered masterpieces of early Netherlandish printmaking noted for their exquisite rendering of flora fauna and contemporary domestic details. This edition is notable for its handsome production values. The text was beautifully set and printed by the Alcuin Press of Chipping Campden a prominent Private Press of the era while the illustrations were delicately reproduced by the Collographic Art Printers. Copies retaining the original dust wrapper which promotes Ernest Benn's other 'Gift Books' including William Blake facsimiles on the rear panel are notably scarce in commerce. This elegant 1928 production revitalises twenty-four of Aesop's most enduring fables pairing the earthy vigorous seventeenth-century prose of Sir Roger L'Estrange with the masterful intricate etchings of Marcus Gheeraerts the Elder. Printed with typographical excellence by the Alcuin Press it offers a sophisticated timeless reading experience where classic moral instruction meets the height of early modern book illustration.
